*Watched Black Mirror episode 1*
HD here: http://watchseries.lt/serie/black_mirror

(( SPOILERS ))

Pretttttty wildly unrealistic! :p .. Aside from the general incompetence of the government, just the simple fact that they actually thought that complying with the demands would mean a release (-trusting- a hostage taker; no one responsible does that!).. that was absurd. And lots of other big plot holes, like the lone kidnapper/director who subdued royal body guards, the reporter running away from Police (like -that- could be a good idea), etc...

So.. -if- the writers knew how ridiculous the whole story premise was... all I can think: they mentioned director Lars von Trier and "Dogme 95" — it was basically Lars' misguided attempt at creating realism in cinema (a task that was found to be impossible in "The Five Obstructions"; every time Lars imposed more rules on Jørgen Leth with the aim of creating realism, Leth found ways to show that those rules do not or cannot produce realism in a medium that has unreality and simulation built into it). Going from there, the director/kidnapper of this story was doing basically the same thing that Lars attempted — demanding a "real" performance from someone who had built a career in "deception" ("politics" as deception, which could be seen for simulation; simulation being Leth's specialty as an artist).

Going even further (and this might be off the wall, but)... If the lack of realism (all the plot holes and impossibilities) was intentional, then maybe it was to show that in order to get a genuine act of realism out of this politician (or any person in general), then everything around him has to be unrealistic — he has to face an impossible situation and impossible responses for his own response to be made genuine.

But.. the "statement" of releasing the princess before he started filming. Hmm.. not sure how that fits the Lars model. They pointed out that the streets were cleared and no one was there to respond to this reversal of fortunes. That could just be a separate message on misguided mob justice going beyond the point of necessity — people not demanding things of the politician for some utility, but simply for their entertainment (people always want a "geuine" politician, but their demands do not necessarily produce genuine, real-world results)..

Blah. This might be giving too much credit. It might just have been a badly written experiment that speculated on how far someone would go when pressured by social media and internet mob justice. It's possible that the director of this episode didn't quite understand Lars' failure and was just sort of using Dogme 95 for a miscellaneous script template..
Have to think about it ;)

debbie downer! :p
& you may be going too deep, prob just the social media thing

from wikipedia:
Black Mirror is a British television anthology series created by Charlie Brooker that shows the dark side of life and technology. Regarding the programme's content and structure, Brooker noted, "each episode has a different cast, a different setting, even a different reality. But they're all about the way we live now – and the way we might be living in 10 minutes' time if we're clumsy."

Kevin Spacey is House majority whip... and he said "hwhip" at one point (Family Guy style)

Have seen a little bit of Cards but somewhere in the middle of season 1, so I was lost on character issues. Looks fun, though :P

And posting because I just realized that the reason that Parks&Rec will be finishing 13 episodes so quickly is because they're doing 2 episodes a week. Very kind of them given that some shows and movies have been stretching things out forevers. Guess they like Netflix's binge-watch considerations :)

The third episode of P&R was good (I especially love that the writers don't apply cynicism to Andy and April's relationship — it gets annoying when Hollywood thinks that love can't exist long-term), but the fourth episode was sort of a bottle episode.. just Ron and Leslie stuck in the old office to force them to work out their issues, so some of it was contrived character work. It turned out nicely, though :)

(spoiler?): got to see one of the results of the season 9 apartment fire! But the makeup effects for Cricket make me wonder if they'll just kill the character to avoid production issues.. then again, they shot an entire season of episodes to work around Danny DeVito's schedule, so they might have shot all the Cricket scenes at once to avoid costs..

Most recent Sunny wasn't so great :/
There were some okay ideas, like Charlie's answers for the "Family Fight" survey, but nothing really funny. The problem might have been that they weren't directing realistic responses from the things they were saying in public. Like, it was a game show, but there were lots of silences made for Keegan-Michael Key to react with expressions, but those didn't really work in the format they created. It'll could at least be interesting to see if Dennis will completely unravel now, but can't expect much continuity type stuff..

The "Frank Retires" episode of Philly was pretty hilarious (especially blood in a shopping bag and not knowing if the gang was really going to kill Frank, removing DeVito from the show), but the finale ("Ass Kickers United") was especially funny to me :D

Didn't realize that it was the finale until writing this, but it makes sense because they referenced former episodes a lot (Charlie asking where to put his feet while holding the Scientology-machine grips, turtle's dream in outer space
http://i.imgur.com/cEmBffx.gif ,
re-burning the apartment, etc.). Kind of hoped for a little more continuity from the apartment fire last season, like with the McPoyle's, the landlord, etc., but many lols this season, so whatevers :p

Anybody watch The 100?

Finished season 2 the other night. I would like the show a lot better, even with the SJW matriarchal lesbian warrior princesses, if not for the force fed jewish bullshit.

Other than the whole mosses thing, which they couldn't have made more overt if they tried, it's relatively decent. Definitely geared towards a younger-ish audience though I think. It's also based on a book that is obviously riding on the coat tales of this whole dystopian teen-novel thing.

will catch up with Community tonight!

Has anyone seen "The Fall" with Gillian Anderson? It's pretty good. They've made two seasons and I've only watched the first season, but it's a finite plot, so I think they've stopped at 11 episodes..

It's basically about a sociopath police officer (Anderson) hunting a sociopath serial killer (Jamie Dornan of 50 Shades) in Northern Ireland. Anderson's character deals with real misogyny and it's suggested that Dornan kills successful women for that reason (misogyny), but Anderson's character also has a dysfunctional feminism and Dornan a tragic side, so watching it you kind of go between love and hate for each character (no one is heroic). I don't think that the side stories add much to it, though. They serve a peripheral purpose, but it mostly seems like writer filler to me...
anyways

Yahoo must have given them a lot of support. Nice to see that happen. And Yvette Nicole Brown was only in one episode (doesn't look like it'll be more), but it seems apparent that she had lap-band or something.

I wouldn't say it's the best season by any stretch, but yea, super enjoyable.

I absolutely didn't like how Abed couldn't see through Britta's "ruse" of just wanting to have a party. Abed might basically just be a robot (less so in the later seasons), but at no point has he ever been portrayed as somewhat stupid. Just one of those things that kinda bothered me, but I sorta forgot about it at the "It's the end of the world...Party like it!" line lol

Finished watching Season 2 of BBC's "The Fall" (serial killer drama with Gillian Anderson). It really seems ridiculous that they have a third season planned given how much has been closed off, but maybe if it's very short...

The season 2 finale was borderline ridiculous, particularly the character of Jimmy and his suicidal action. I think that they just wanted a body count in case they didn't get a season 3 renewal..

As season 2 moved on, they got kind of silly about how quickly characters would pick up on evidence continuity. Like the killer (Spector) would make a mistake, and within 2 minutes the Police were able to build an evidentiary chain and know where he had been (am thinking specifically of the license plate scene).

I kind of liked how they portrayed misandry/misogyny, but it became clear as they moved on that the show wasn't trying for an unslanted view but that they favored Anderson's character's sexism (though they left space to undermine that in Season 3). Most of the side stories ended up being tied into the main story specifically to show different brands of sexism, but the writers sort of fell short when it comes to gender discourse innovations. It was mostly just self-affirmations — the type of bland understandings that would make it to Jezabel articles. Still, regardless of show writer preference, they put details in place that showed a lot of sexism on both sides — counter-balanced by characters being somewhat ideologically inconsistent (being sexist but still showing a compassionate side). So, while the writers didn't overtly address the finer details with dialogue, by sticking to realistic character play they -did- put a lot of the problematic sides of the issues into the show. I think that scene examinations of this show would be very useful..

So! Dolphinately watch this show if you have a chance. It's well-directed and manages pretty well despite it sometimes cracking under production changes.

Daredevil by Marvel for Netflix!

13 episode season, even works well as a standalone miniseries. The first of four planned series involving NYC-based street level heroes. The others will be Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage. The four short seasons/miniseries (it hasn't been decided if they'll get second seasons) will cumulate into a Defenders miniseries.

This is a bit confusing since none of them were central members of the team during any of its incarnations, and the Defenders was usually characterized by it's over powered nature, with such recurring and prominent members as Doctor Strange, the Hulk, Namor, the Silver Surfer - to name a few. Although at various points the Defenders also had much more streety members, but still an odd roster to be dubbing the Defenders.

I only do this shit with spoilers so you're forewarned.

The series chronicles young attorney Matt Murdoch's journey from blind child (through flash backs) to crime-fighting vigilante. It introduces many characters fans of Daredevil will recognize, including Foggy Nelson, Matt's best friend and partner at Law, Claire Temple who is a Cage love interest and in this series acts as the Night Nurse, and Karen Page who is Matt's longest running love interest (according to wikipedia, i got no idea). Other appearances include a black Ben Urich, The Owl, Wilson Fisck.

Overall I thought it was pretty well done. It caters to established fans and new comers a like, and it isn't too over-the-top super heroey or TDKR corney. Marvel seems to have found a nice middle ground in which to use their street-level heroes. I haven't watched Agents of Shield or Arrow, which this is being compared to a lot, so I can't really say more on this front.

In terms of plot and narrative it was very straightforward and did a good job of showcasing how Matt has to juggle two very separate sides of himself and the consequences for those around him. For Karen and Ben those came as a result of their own decisions, but the old lady Elena drives home the point that anybody connected to Daredevil may become a target.

The show introduces The Hand, the Japanese ninja cult from the comics which is so frequently the antagonist in Daredevil and Iron Fist stories (and others). It also introduces other supernatural elements, but a little more subtly. The mysterious Black Sky weapon, for example, is never explained to Matt and it's nature is not revealed. Madame Gao says some things about the funerary rituals for Nobu that hint at the resurrection practices of The Hand, but it's only a hint and kind of dismissed in this particular instance. We get a sample of blind warriors fighting some sort of war against the hand. This might be something from the comics but I haven't really read much Daredevil, so I wouldn't know.

MADAME GAO. I would bet money she is from K'un-Lun. Unless there is another mysterious asian land Im not remembering. Well, there is, but it's strictly X-Men & mutant related so that leaves us with K'un-Lun.

- So Claire Temple is a Luke Cage love interest and K'un-Lun is the home of the Immortal Iron Fist (but not necessarily Danny Rand, who is the current Iron Fist, he was born in New York and raised in K'un Lun). Also note that Spider-Man is now going to be in the MCU and we've got Wilson Fisck, very much one of Spider-Man's premier adversaries (along with Daredevil's).

Anyways. The series, like I said, is basically Matt's journey to becoming Daredevil. He is a vigilante in the first episode but it isn't until the last that he becomes a hero. This is really an evolutionary process as he watches people get hurt and sees how difficult it is to get at people like Fisck, and he explores his own religious nature. At the same time we get to witness Wilson Fisck go from a wealthy businessman and syndicate boss to a crazed, blood thirsty criminal, eventually resulting in his demise and we assume his Kingpin persona.

Great fight scenes, if a little unrealistic with the whole never getting shot thing. Could be choreographed better IMO but not at all bad. Loved the Nobu fight.

Show drags on for a little in the middle/towards the end, and then steps into overdrive. Not sure why. They could have paced things better and then left more time to fill in the end without super compressing it. But it works out alright and does create some tension/suspense.

Overall I really liked it, and it makes me want Iron Fist. Hope it gets a second season, too.

In fact, I think the whole Madame Gao thing was their way of making an opening for Iron Fist to take place at least partially in K'un-Lun.

..but otherwise it was kind of a weird episode. Fun effects and stuff, but kind of strange :p

You mean Annie's Boobs? The monkey? I didn't see that monkey in that episode ;p

I feel like Annie's Boobs would have been a great little addition to the episode, considering Annie's actual boobs were a discussion point lol

Last episode of Community was weird...

I have a theory that Jeff is going to kill himself at the end of the series, but that just seems too morbid for Community

"Last episode of Community was weird..."

Thought it was fun, though! :p
I liked how they managed Abed's awareness of a show's 22-minute run time (with dramatic expectations and time management around that). Then that cliché at the end of coping with the loss of a child, etc.. Also this made me lol:

Was randomly thinking of personal-computer/document wiping tropes in TV/cinema.. :p

"Conspiracy Theory" (1997-08-07)
[can't find a clip, but it's the scene where he burns everything in his apartment while escaping police]

"The Core" (2003-03-28)

Law & Order SVU S6-E14 (2005-02-08): "Game"

Was so good :D
I think I only got maybe a fourth of the references (optimistically). They were really compressed. Like the Dean's elevator scene was both a Captain American reference -and- a Last Samurai reference. Have to watch again!
