Member | Sun Sep 11 03:14:13 After working for some years as an academic translator at a University, I began tentatively sending off my CV to respected commercial agencies, and for the last year or so I’ve built up working relationship with 4 agencies that are now sending me more work than I can cope with. The money is decidedly better than the Uni money, and works out at roughly €40-50/h. It can get double that for emergency jobs, or very easy jobs. Furthermore, a lot of these international transactions are quite easy to ”disappear”, should one be so inclined. But much more important: it’s all completely based on Internet communication, which means that I am completely free to work anywhere I want. So, I’m looking into taking the plunge and moving to a dream location. Currently, I’m drooling over houses on Crete and Sicily – prices are ridiculous, a nice 200sqm house with a swimming pool, large garden, two balconies and 10 min walk to the mediterranean only costs about €700 a month and the cost of living is very cheap for a Swede earning a good Swedish wage. And, of course, within the EU, I can just fuck off tomorrow and live the rest of my life in Sicily without ever registering a single paper to any govt. I can hardly believe this is actually starting to come true heh… So: Any other good places to check out? The point of this plan is to live somewhere really nice and enjoy life, but also to save money for the next several years. Only obligation is to my cat. |

Member | Sun Sep 11 04:07:06 I've never been to Sicily or to Italy for that matter so I can't say if I would move there. But I have been to Mallorca and I love that island. Especially Palma. A charming city. Best tapas I have ever had. Good wine. Not sure I would settle down there though. Maybe Hawaii. Or Tokyo. |
Paramount
Member | Sun Sep 11 04:10:30 But if I would have to stay within the EU... hm yes, Palma. Or something similar. I don't know. I can't decide. |

Member | Sun Sep 11 07:47:00 "I've never been to Sicily" Sicily is fucking great, every single shitty little cafe serves great food, people are, of course, fairly ebullient as they tend to be around the Med, crystal clear sea water, but combined with a lush, green sub-tropical scenery. But Crete sounds great too, one of the hearts of western civilization and philosophy, great scenery, etc - Crete has an advantage in that its a popular resort for people wanting to retire there, so they have a whole industry going for long term rentals for people who want to live there a couiple of years before buying property, |

Member | Sun Sep 11 08:36:22 I was totally set on Crete until I stupidly checked prices on Sicily. Its generally a fairly expensive place for tourists so I haven't bothered checking, even though that's where I've had my most enjoyable holiday ever, probably, so imagine my confusion when I saw that rents and cost of living for the native residents are almost as cheap as Crete...I still have a tender spot for Crete though, and my sis who just returned from a holiday therethat had her crying when she had to return home hates me for even considering moving there, she says that the fact I have the opportunity is downright immoral |
williamthebastard
Member | Sun Sep 11 08:55:50 Ah, Elounda= north coast? I think thats the less touristy side, right? |
williamthebastard
Member | Sun Sep 11 08:57:49 How is the Internet there? I dont need anything fancy, but do need a reliable connection - from what I've seen on forums, it seems to work pretty well? |
CrownRoyal
Member | Sun Sep 11 10:41:34 It is a touristy place, I think. But so what? A sight of a fat middle aged Russian or Ukrainian man in speedos, with a twenty years old supermodel massaging him never bothered me. I lived in a five star hotel so their wifi was excellent. I don't know how good the local providers are. But this is 2016, I doubt Internet is a problem there |

Revved Up | Sun Sep 11 13:02:50 Crete and Sicily have *possible* negatives. Turkey and Greece are both still claiming Crete which might possibly erupt in violence someday and I guess is the Mafia is still alive and well in Sicily. Not sure if that could ever prove unhealthy or not. Would probably be fine though I live in Little Italy here in Kansas City and I am surrounded by what is left of them and I feel the safest I have ever felt. How about The Riviera or Andorra or Southern Spain? |
williamthebastard
Member | Sun Sep 11 13:58:11 Spain doesnt really do good food, not compared to their neighbors, and my mom has a place on the Riviera which I a) don't like, and b) would be a disaster to have my mom in nagging distanc every summer. Sam's thing looks great, but dodgy Internet etc |
williamthebastard

I can already feel the weight of the oppression of modern civilization fall from my shoulders as I prepare for a life growing tomatoes (to hide my weed) in a Sicilian garden, the Med glistening 300 yards away against a deep blue, cloudless sky... :DDD |

Member | Fri Sep 30 13:42:00 Malta and Crete have two distinct advantages: they both only demand ID and a rental contract to get a bank account; Greece even has some easy non-resident account thing. This is extremely interesting, cos these are bank accounts I could use in international business that the Swedish state knows nothing about... |

Member | Fri Sep 30 13:52:13 Not at all. From my mansion on an island, I intend to gather an army of top security cleared and sworn translators, and by infiltrating the top levels of international power and mistranslating everything toward my own ends, I shall release psychotic sociology on you all. |
