So not necessarily as much a given as people think. Boris has now a problem: he has to deliver brexit in a year; and it will be a painful economically. And he won't be able to blame anyone else.

That said, getting a blowout victory like this a full nine years into an (austerity-filled, no less) ruling stint would be completely ridiculous. That's when the opposition needs to just nuke its entire leadership and start over from scratch. Unfortunately Corbyn and his acolytes have had four years to entrench themselves in the party machinery, so who knows what happens if he insists on staying.

If Scotland leaves, there's no real reason to expect it would gain market share in its trade with the EU. But it will lose a lot of access to UK markets. It will also, should it wish to join the EU, need to erect customs border. That's before the fiscal and monetary issues. Project fear on brexit is turning into project reality; and I don't think that fact will be lost on Scottish voters. It may happen anyway, but I don't think it's the dead cert people think. Is say around 50:50.

The referendum could follow Scottish Parliament rules on eligibility to vote. https://www.gov.uk/elections-in-the-uk/scottish-parliament Or, alternatively, use devolution to create a distinct Scottish identification, then do like in Brexit and only allow Scottish residents to vote in the referendum (EU citizens were not allowed to vote for Brexit). If they want independence, they can tweak eligibility and get it.

When it comes down to it, he's one of the biggest Anglophobes around. If the Unitdd Kingdon won't consent to being ruled by a bunch of continent EUSSR bureaucrats, then it deserves to be broken up. Lol Unlike the opposition parties, the Conservatives actually respect the results of referendums, and the Scots decided to stay. In a once-in-a-generation decision, no less. SNP can pull as many stunts as they want, but at the end of the day Boris has the final say on the SI2 question.

The conservatives should probably not have called a referendum to resolve their internal party difficulties if they wanted Scottish independence to remain off the table for a generation. It fundamentally changed what Scotland agreed to be part of. Scots are not Anglos btw.

Let's see if he makes a success of it, and then we can say if my idiocy was overrun by his common sense, or vice versa. Hacving spent a year as a consultant working on brexit delivery plans for the govt, and having fed into the briefing his new ministers will be getting on our ability - as a matter of logistics - to put in place the measures to implement his deal by December 2020, I think we shall see some turbulent times to come.
