Don't shoot the wheel," (i.e., don't shoot my car) instead of thinking maybe that he was in mortal danger and shouldn't be in that spot. Anyways, probably not a good idea to walk aggressively towards police while brandishing a knife. Just a thought.

The riots may be sponsored by more of the Trevor Noah "social compact" logic; if you perceive injustice, you can do whatever you want. It's pretty awesome because it's not even possible to apply justice on the timeline that rioters demand. The Philly police shot Walter Wallace on Monday afternoon, and it would probably take days and weeks to formalize charges, set court dates, etc. Meanwhile, rioters have a sweet spot of ignorance and emotional reaction where they can surrender accountability and Purge for a little while. Blessed be our New Founding Fathers for letting us Purge and cleanse our souls. Blessed be America, a nation reborn.

If it still isn't enough, then that would count as rebellion and you could send in the US military. In reality, police stick together and arrest a handful at a time, leave them locked up until the violence stops.
