Is it just me, or does this thing look like it overdosed on ozempic?

Also Boeing was awarded the contract so they may as well cancel it now. :o)

I think the F-35 was the last overpriced, low utility aircraft significantly subsidised by US allies.

Good luck with that trillion dollar project though.

Calls are mounting in Canada and Europe to shun the Lockheed Martin F-35 fighter and other U.S. defense exports amid a backlash against controversial foreign policy changes in Washington

The growing pressure from existing and potential F-35 customers comes at a delicate time for the Lockheed-led program. The fighter’s global supply chain is already struggling with modernization delays and facing uncertainty about the Trump administration’s commitment to the U.S. order plan, which accounts for roughly 60% of overall scheduled deliveries each year.

“As one of the decision-makers behind Denmark’s purchase of F35s, I regret it,” Rasmus Jarlov, a conservative member of the Danish parliament, posted on X
...
“Therefore, buying American weapons is a security risk that we cannot run,” Jarlov stated. “We will make enormous investments in air defense, fighter jets, artillery and other weapons in the coming years, and we must avoid American weapons

"Big win for boeing."

Not really. It's going to get cancelled. The entire concept is half baked. It's Littoral Combat Shit level stupid.

You're essentially pairing a F-117 type "fighter" with stealthier versions of this shit ...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Atomics_MQ-20_Avenger

Not only is none of it survivable in a contested environment, but it's not even affordable. Those things (as is) cost ~ $30 million each. The cost would obviously rise with a greater emphasis on stealth. There's nothing "attritable" about this. They are not inexpensive, and they are not readily replaceable.

Those things also can't carry much payload. If you want more payload then we're going to have to make it bigger, which means more expensive.

Pardon the pun but this will never fly. It's just a matter of how much time and money they piss away before they realize that the plan doesn't make any damn sense.

The price tag (~ $300 million each) screams bleeding edge tech and performance ... but the mission (baby sitting much cheaper lower performance drones) is pedestrian.

The F-35 is fine, but it's the result of another hair-brained scheme. Not only was it dumb to try to design one jet that could fill three different sets of requirements, it was also dumb to try to make all our combat planes stealth. That increased the hell out of procurement and maintenance costs and greatly reduces their availability.

We should have ended production at ~ 600 F-35s.

~ 120 for the US Navy and the rest for the US Air Force.

The US Marines didn't need a stealth fighter at all.

And they are apparently going to announce the US Navy's new fighter soon.
