The Virginia Supreme Court on Friday struck down a voter-approved Democratic congressional redistricting plan, delivering another major setback to the party in a nationwide battle against Republicans for an edge in this year’s midterm elections.

The court ruled 4-3 that the state’s Democratic-led legislature violated procedural requirements when it placed the constitutional amendment on the ballot to authorize the mid-decade redistricting. Voters narrowly approved the amendment April 21, but the court’s ruling renders the results of that vote meaningless.

As a policy, gerrymandering is horrible. It entrenches one-party rule, disenfranchises voters in the minority party, and increases political polarization. It's crass politics at its worst.

But the way Trump and co. have pulled it off is nothing short of impressive. He caught the Democrats completely unprepared, he's notched up wins in several states with several more to go, and he made it clear that he is the undisputed ruler of the GOP by destroying the Indiana politicians who dared to defy him on the issue.

The GOP may pick up 20 net seats purely from gerrymandering this year.

Gerrymandering is corrosive and bad. But one has to admire the success of the campaign.
