Utopia Talk / Politics / What to do about the Soviets?

OK it's been ~ 2 weeks since the Soviets invaded Georgia, they are still there and entrenching themselves more by the day, and they are now threatening strikes on Poland for having the audacity of engaging in common defense with it's NATO allies.

I think it is safe to say that the sheeps clothing is off the wolf, and safe to conclude that the Soviet Union is NOT interested in being a constructive partner to the EU & NATO.

How should the west respond?

Some will undoubtedly desire to simply turn back the clock and return things to the way they were before the invasion, but IMO that is simply not possible.

Kicking them out of the G8 is a start.

Not sure if it is feasible, or even possible, but I would like to see them stripped of their seat on the UNSC.

Or at least lose their veto power. A belligerent state should not have that power and they have shown themselves to be a belligerent state.

Wow. If you hadn't been born in the US, I bet you'd have wanted to kick the US off the planet for Iraq.

"Wow. If you hadn't been born in the US, I bet you'd have wanted to kick the US off the planet for Iraq."

And if you hadn't been born missing some chromosomes I'm sure you'd stop with the ludicrous comparisons between Iraq and Georgia...

(ignore the slam, its all in good fun these days)

MB: Iraq is not relevant to this conversation. This thread was meant for discussion of the Soviets aggressive actions and how to contain them.

Well obviously the US should sign an immediate pact with Georgia in order to fight for its territorial integrity.

You go git em boy!

I think he means to give them an inauguration gift to join the unilateralist club.

Iraq IS relevant, and even more so Kosovo, because it was because of these actions in large part that Russia is excusing their excess.

The reasons America went offensive isn't as important as the fact that it did go offensive.

Stupid mistake that opened the doors of excuse for other big nations who want to go offensive.

Sure, throw in Sudan and Afghanastan and...

Facts are that Iraq and Georgia have about zero in common when you bother to look at the build up, invasion, and aftermath.

But do keep on saying they are the same, lets us know who the soviets on the board are.

"and even more so Kosovo"

This is moronic. Either give reasons why Kosovo = S. Ossetia in any way or STFU with this line of reasoning.

Strip clubs? The entire Russian female population exists solely to be prostitutes and the object of sexual harassment. I don't think they have a dire need for strip clubs.

"Well obviously the US should sign an immediate pact with Georgia in order to fight for its territorial integrity."

jergul: I'm all for it, but this administration obviously wants no part of it ... and I seriously doubt that our European allies would cooperate, which would make any operation impossible.

But yeah, I'm all for trying to establish a new security apparatus in Eastern Europe built around Poland and Ukraine ... and a very healthy dose of material and financial military aid.

As far as Georgia and the Caucasus in general, the natural competition there is between Russia, Iran and Turkey, so it would probably be wisest to let those countries thumb wrestle over who gets to dominate that region ... with the US backing Turkey of course.

ne of the main problems is the biased and one-sided reporting by the media in the US and Europe.

If people were aware of the full background and about the initiation of open warfare by Georgia, they would be less worried and would think differently about the situation.

This kind of Russophobe reporting is useful for people who support NATO and the military industrial complexe, but not for clear and informed deliberations.

"If people were aware of the full background and about the initiation of open warfare by Georgia, they would be less worried and would think differently about the situation."

redblooded: If the Soviets weren't occupying Georgian soil with "peacekeepers" while providing cover for the separatists who conduct attacks against Georgia ... we might think differently about the situation.

But they are occupying Georgian soil and their army is providing cover for the separatists who conduct attacks against Georgia.

Kind of like we get slammed for invading and occupying Iraq.

Funny how that works, huh? :o)
