Russia Votes to Void Cession of Crimea to Ukraine

The Russian Parliament voted today to declare the 1954 grant of Crimea to Ukraine unconstitutional and void, adding that the issue should be resolved through negotiations.

The resolution, which passed 136 to 18, with 20 abstentions, in effect annulled the decision by Nikita S. Khrushchev, the Soviet leader at the time, to give the strategic peninsula to Ukraine as a "gift" marking the 300th anniversary of Russian-Ukrainian union.

Russia could claim Crimea if Ukraine joins NATO

If Ukraine's admission to NATO is accelerated, Russia could raise the question of which country the Crimea should be a part of," Alexei Ostrovsky, the head of the State Duma committee on CIS affairs, said in a radio interview.

"The Russian Federation has legal grounds to revise agreements signed under Khrushchev."

Former Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev, who grew up in Ukraine, made the Crimean Peninsula - a territory of 26,100 sq km washed by the Black and Azov seas - part of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic in 1954. The peninsula had formerly been a part of the Russian Soviet Socialist Republic.

The Crimea, now an autonomous region within Ukraine, is a predominantly Russian-speaking territory. Since the 1991 breakup of the Soviet Union, the Crimea has unsuccessfully sought independence from Ukraine. A 1994 referendum in the Crimea supported demands for a broader autonomy and closer links with Russia.

However, Ostrovsky admitted that Ukraine was unlikely to join NATO any time soon, saying that the Ukrainian president, prime minister and parliamentary speaker were the only people in the country seeking membership of the Western military alliance. His comments referred to recent opinion polls that have indicated that about 70% of the population is opposed to joining NATO.

Putins getting a little too nationalistic. The Russians have decided: Fuck the US, they can't do shit at the moment, we're gonna get as much influence out of this deal as we can while the going's good.

If they love Russia so bad, Kursk is right next door. They should go there and stop whining.

Best way to get over this is to let Ukraine join NATO if they really want it, and if they do join make them give up crimea. That way, everyone is unhappy so its likely for the best.

Why wouldn't they? It's not like Bush is going to do anything to stop them from invading another ally.

Murder, actual hostilities ceased within a week, casualties are within the hundreds, why would you prefer a full scale war between Russia and the US, killing tens or hundreds of thousands of Russians and Americans and teetering all the time on the edge of going nuclear to that?

1) Because Georgia was supposedly an ally, and only a nation of punk bitches would allow an ally to get overrun and occupied without responding with force to drive out the invader.

2) I do not accept the premise that tens of thousands of Americans would die ... much less hundreds of thousands.

I am endlessly annoyed at the assertion that standing up to the Soviets is equivalent to nuclear war. That is stupid. The Soviets are not suicidal, so any short of Abrams tanks rolling towards Moscow is simply NOT going to result in a Soviet launch no matter how many times that nonsense is repeated.

Ok, so you don't think the US should have neccessarily gone to war with Russia then? Because I think you're coming off as though thats what you mean to many posters. You just wanted a much stronger resistance from the US.

I think we should've bombed the ever loving crap out of Soviet forces inside Georgia ... and that most certainly is war.
