Assad sucks. But the stability under a dictator in the region is much better than the creeping chaos of terroristic jihadist militant factions. That's been obvious since day 1 of this cluster F.

Assad as dictator is not on the table for a future Syria.

The main moderate rebel challenge is that Assad would win any presidential election and his supporting parties would win any national parliamentary election.

Hence the rawr devolution and self-determination within federation ideas of the yellow on the map.

Red = territory controlled by the Syrian government. Assad now controls Syria's three largest cities (the capital Damascus, Aleppo and Hims) and is heavily supported by Russia, Iran and Hezbollah

Yellow = territory controlled by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a Kurdish-dominated alliance of mostly moderate militias, that are supported by several Western nations. They have primarily been fighting against ISIS and recently captured their capital of al-Raqqah in eastern Syria

White = territory controlled by Jabhat Fatah al-Sham, which was formerly an al-Qaeda affiliate but broke off from the organization about a year ago

Black = ISIS. Generally in retreat now as pretty much every other faction in Syria is fighting against them

Green = all other rebel groups in Syria, including both moderate and Islamist groups, and variously supported by one or more Middle Eastern or Western power. They are particularly strong in Idlib (northwest Syria), where the Islamist coalition of Ahrar al-Sham is dominant, and in Daraa (southern Syria), where a mix of moderate and Islamist alliances hold sway. There are also Islamist rebels active in Eastern Ghouta (adjacent to Damascus), which have posed a constant threat to the capital but have been under siege and will likely surrender soon

Just to add:

-The SDF (yellow) is opposed by Turkey, which believes that the Syrian Kurds pose a security threat
- The green in the al-Bab area (far north) consists of Turkish-backed militias that are supported by the Turkish army. This region forms a so-called "buffer zone" for Turkey and may pose a threat to the SDF

There are loads of "de-escalation zones" where fighting cannot take place (or the parties risk severe sanction by various nation states).

BEIRUT, LEBANON (AMN 12:15 A.M.) – Russia, the United States and Jordan have reached an agreement which will allow the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) to take over control of virtually all of militant-held southern Syria with the exception of a Coalition-occupied base near the Iraqi border.

The agreement will see pro-government forces assume control over nine hundred (900) key points – which until now were held by US-backed mercenaries – throughout Syria’s great southern desert region.

The agreement excludes surrendering a key Coalition base at the town of al-Tanf near the Syrian-Iraqi border where US troops are still reportedly present.

One US-backed Free Syrian Army faction in the region, the Ahmad Abdo Martyrs Brigade, has reportedly abandoned its positions already and is withdrawing towards Jordanian territory.

When exactly the agreement goes into full effect is still not entirely clear yet.

It was pretty unsubstantial, it isn't as though they were going to accomplish anything more than a temporary stale mate and it the count down had started for the SAA to shift their focus from ISIS in the western desert/euphrates to the South.

Odds are good that fighters will be shuttled from Jordan to Turkey to reinforce Idlib imo

They agreed to give up sand. 900 key points must mean geodata stuff on virtually everything.

The border area has no strategic importance for as long as the rebels are not getting enough supplies to mount a significant offensive in the area.

Pillz
The rebels still hold important areas by the Jordanian frontier. Idlib is moving towards being shut out of the conflict by way of de-escalation.

BEIRUT, LEBANON (AMN 5:40 P.M.) – The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) has lifted the nine month long siege imposed on the Deir Ezzor Military Airport by the so-called Islamic State (ISIL), Hezbollah’s official media wing reported this afternoon.

The Syrian Arab Army was able to lift the siege after liberating the territory around the Tahtuh and Harabish districts, forcing the Islamic State terrorists to retreat away from the road blocking the provincial capital from the Deir Ezzor Airport.

As a result of this advance, the Syrian Arab Army was able to meet up with their forces at the Deir Ezzor Military Airport for the first time in nine months.

The next objective for the Syrian Arab Army is to liberate the Thardeh Mountains; once cleared, the Deir Ezzor Military Airport will be secured from its western perimeter.

BEIRUT, LEBANON (1:10 A.M.) – The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) has crossed the Euphrates River in the Deir Ezzor Governorate after making several advances against the so-called Islamic State (ISIL) terror organization, the spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, stated on Friday.

“Now we turn to the current agenda of international relations on the development of the situation in Syria. I would like to inform you that after a major victory in Deir ez-Zor, the Syrian Government Army continues to clear ISIS terrorists in the eastern regions of the country. The suburbs of this provincial centre have been liberated. The advanced units successfully crossed the Euphrates River, reaching its eastern shore,” Zakharova confirmed.

“It is necessary that the UN actively participate in the humanitarian demining along with other countries that sincerely want to help the Syrian people,” she continued.

“Such assistance would be a real contribution in support of stabilisation and creation of favourable conditions for a political settlement in Syria,” Zakharova concluded.

Russian Strike Wounds Syrian Democratic Forces Troops

By CJTF-OIR | | September 16, 2017

SOUTHWEST ASIA – At approximately 12:30 a.m. GMT Sept. 16, Russian forces struck a target east of the Euphrates River in Syria near Dayr Az Zawr, causing injuries to Coalition partner forces.

Russian munitions impacted a location known to the Russians to contain Syrian Democratic Forces and Coalition advisors. Several SDF fighters were wounded and received medical care as a result of the strike.

Multinational Coalition troops advising and assisting the SDF were present but not wounded as a result of the Russian strike. "Coalition officials are available and the de-confliction line with Russia is open 24 hours per day,” said Coalition commander Lt. Gen. Paul E. Funk II. "We put our full efforts into preventing unnecessary escalation among forces that share ISIS as our common enemy," said Funk.

The Coalition and its partners remain committed to the defeat of ISIS and continued de-confliction with Russian officials. Coalition forces and partners always retain the right of self-defense.

MOSCOW, September 18. /TASS/. Syrian forces have driven the Islamic State militants out of some villages on the eastern shore of the Euphrates River and are carrying out an offensive in the eastern direction, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Monday.

"The storm troops of the Syrian army have driven IS militants out of a number of villages on the eastern shore of Euphrates and are carrying out an offensive in the eastern direction, broadening the foothold they seized," the ministry said.

The ministry said during the operation to take control of an area on the eastern shore of the river units of Syria’s government forces joined by units of the 4th tank division backed by the Russian Aerospace Forces crossed the Euphrates River near Deir ez-Zor using a pontoon bridge.

In fact the only way for the middle east to survive and become a peaceful and civilized place is to create more "Israels" in it. Israels big mistake that will surely destroy her is occupying Palestine. When someone files for divorce, the best choice is to accept it and allow for a civilized process so that you may part as amicably as possible.

We're quickly reaching the point where we're going to find out if jergul's theory of the war ending by the SDF bending the knee to Damascus in exchange for autonomy and a gradual Assad ouster holds up. Frankly, I don't see it; everything we've heard from Assad to date suggests that he wants to return to the pre-2011 autocracy, and the West isn't throwing so much support behind rebel groups just so they can turn around and submit to a Russian/Iranian/Hezbollah ally. I suppose it's possible, but evidence needs to be presented to suggest it's going to happen.

A gradual Assad ouster would take place at the polling booths, not elsewhere or for other reasons.

I have consistently been clear on Assad being a stumbling block hard to bypass democratically because he would win free and open presidential elections.

But at least the west finally got with my programme of Kurds being the only moderately secular moderate rebels.

VIDEO: Syrian troops on east Euphrates bank discover unexpected items of ISIS fighters

By Andrew Illingworth -
28/09/2017

BEIRUT, LEBANON (8:30 A.M.) – As Syrian Arab Army troops operating on the eastern bank of the Euphrates River in Deir Ezzor province continue to expand their zone of control throughout towns situated along the shoreline, unexpected items of the ISIS legacy in the region have begun to appear.

Footage (below) captured by Syrian troops has emerged on social media showing them clearing a building within a settlement located on the eastern bank of the Euphrates.

The video shows Syrian troops discovering a range of objects which are, technically, outlawed under ISIS rule including a Ukrainian flag (non-ISIS flags are forbidden under Islamic State rule), cigarettes (supposedly forbidden to all who live under Islamic State rule) and flamboyant (riyaa) luxury home-wares.

The footage offers a look at the hypocrisies in which ISIS members were allowed to indulge during the three years of their uninterrupted rule throughout the region.

MEYMIM /Syria/, September 28. /TASS/. Information on capture of two Russian servicemen by the Islamic State (IS, a terrorist organization outlawed in Russia) militants in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor Governorate does not reflect the actual situation, a representative of Russia’s Hmeymim air base said on Thursday.

"All servicemen of the Russian Armed Forces staying in the Syrian Arab Republic are safe and in a good condition and are performing the designated tasks. There were no reports of incidents connected with capture or losses among servicemen of the Russian Armed Forces in the Deir ez-Zor Governorate and other Syrian areas," he stated.

Mass media earlier reported that two Russian servicemen had been captured by IS militants in the Deir ez-Zor Governorate.

Hmeymim is a military air base 25 km south of the city of Latakia. On January 18, 2017, a protocol to an agreement between Russia and Syria on deployment of Russia’s air group was signed in Damascus. According to this document, Moscow received part of the Hmeymim air field and facilities located for 49 years of free use.

Comrade Blackwaternovs (private contracters) may have been captured.

Syrians with Russian language fluency may have made a desperate bid for survival as high valued prisoners and assumed Russian identity.

Isis reports are wrong (due to communication issues or due to disinformation by intent).

The Russian defence ministry does not lie about casualties. It may mislead, but never lie (its like the DoD in that way).

DAMASCUS, SYRIA (4:45 P.M.) – The Syrian Arab Army and its paramilitary allies have managed to re-secure all points lost to ISIS along the as-Sukhnah to Deir Ez-Zor highway and, in doing so, completely regain control of the vital road once again.

Pro-government forces achieved this result after launching a massive counter-offensive against ISIS early this morning.

To clarify, the Syrian Army has secured the towns of ash-Shoulah and Kabajib along the highway and restored the boundaries of territorial control between it and ISIS throughout the region to what it was two days ago.

Islamic State military losses as a result of the Syrian Army counter-offensive are huge, with many dozens of jihadist fighters being killed over the last 12 hours.

More details to follow soon.

Where did you see that it captured? All I could find is this:

"Several dozen members of Daesh have begun a surprise attack on the city of Al-Qaryatayn in central-western Syria, where several terrorists have launched suicide bombings. Fighting continues in and around this city and Syrian forces say they have shot down most of the terrorists.

This attack, carried out in the middle of the territories under the control of the Syrian forces, is being carried out by the terrorists of Daesh who had previously hidden in the city of Al-Qaryatayn and carried out attacks "Inghimasi" ."

Al-Qaryataym are sleeper cells. The SAA had handed the city over to civil administration and had withdrawn to check points outside the town.

ISIS has nothing in the way of heavy weapons in the city. The SAA has re-entered the town. The main challenge is limiting collateral damage, there is no way ISIS represents a serious challenge to SAAs overall control.

EL AVIV, October 16. /TASS/. The operation in Syria is nearing completion so some issues should be tackled immediately, Russian Defense Minister Army General Sergey Shoigu said at a meeting with his Israeli counterpart Avigdor Lieberman in Tel Aviv on Monday.

"I would particularly like to discuss everything connected to Syria," Shoigu said. "The operation there is nearing completion and some issues need to be tackled immediately, while the prospects for the situation in Syria also need to be discussed," he added.

According to the Russian defense minister, there are a lot of issues to be discussed at the Monday meeting. "Apart from issues related to our military and technical cooperation, the fight against terrorism and the situation in the region will top the agenda," he noted.

Shoigu suggested that a number of issues concerning the situation in the Middle East be considered. "As terrorist activities in the world have been growing, the global community needs to close ranks to fight against this scourge," he said expressing confidence that the talks "will help us understand each other better and boost friendly relations between the armed forces of Russia and Israel."

The Russian defense minister thanked his Israeli counterpart for participating in the Sixth Moscow Conference on International Security held on April 26-27, as well as for the constructive dialogue on pressing regional security issues, which took place on the sidelines of the conference. "We hope to see you at the next Moscow Conference that we will hold in April 2018. We will definitely send you an invitation," Shoigu said addressing Lieberman.

According to the Russian minister, the Moscow Conference on International Security has become a platform "for a frank exchange of views on a broad range of global issues."

BEIRUT, LEBANON (AMN 8:00 A.M.) – The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) continued their operations inside Deir Ezzor last night, targeting the last areas under the Islamic State’s (ISIS) control along the western bank of the Euphrates River.

Led by their elite Tiger Forces and 4th Mechanized Division, the Syrian Arab Army struck the Islamic State’s last positions inside Al-Rashidiyah and Al-Ardi.

By midnight, the Syrian Arab Army was in full control of the aforementioned districts, leaving the entire western part of Deir Ezzor City ISIS-free for the first time since 2014.

The Islamic State is now confined to a small area along the eastern bank of the Euphrates River, meaning 97 percent of Deir Ezzor City has been liberated.

BEIRUT, LEBANON (10:50 AMN) – The Russian military is negotiating the release of two nationals that were captured by the Islamic State (ISIS) several months ago in eastern Syria, the RBC News site reported on Thursday.

The two Russians were identified by RBC as Grigory Tsurkanu and Roman Zabolotny; they are both of Cossack descent.

“There is information, but it has not been documented that a group of six people are alive under IS’ captivity, including Roman Zabolotny and Grigory Tsurkanu,” the Chief Ataman leader of the Don Cossack, Viktor Vodolatsky, stated on Thursday.

Vodolatsky also noted that negotiations are under way to transfer this group of prisoners of war to Syrian troops.

“According to the latest information, they are on the border of Syria and Iraq,” he added.

The two Russian nationals were members of a private security company before they were captured by the Islamic State.

BEIRUT, LEBANON (12:40 P.M.) – The Iranian government may have scored their most important regional victory of the year after their allies from the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) liberated the entire western bank of the Euphrates River in the Deir Ezzor Governorate today.

What began as an offensive by the Syrian Army to secure the area around the Kuweires Military Airport (east Aleppo) in early January 2017, quickly developed into an operation to liberate the entire Euphrates River Valley in late Spring of this year after the Russian military command focused their entire attention on defeating the Islamic State terrorist organization inside the country.

With help from Iran, the Syrian Army and their allies were able to liberate thousands of square kilometers of territory from the Islamic State this year, putting them in position to finally open a roadway from Damascus to Baghdad.

While the Islamic State still possesses some pockets inside both Syria and Iraq, they no longer control any major towns or cities that could potentially block a route from Damascus to Baghdad.

For Iran’s enemies – mainly Israel and Saudi Arabia – the Islamic State’s defeat in the Euphrates River Valley has brought to fruition the “Shiite crescent” that links Tehran to Beirut via Syria and Iraq.

MOSCOW, December 13. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin has submitted to the State Duma (lower house of parliament) an agreement with Syria on expanding the Russian Navy’s base in Syria’s Tartus. The information is available in the Duma’s digital database.

"The duration of the agreement is 49 years, it can be automatically prolonged for a period of 25 years in case none of the parties send a written notification to the other at least one year before a period expires concerning its intention to terminate the agreement," the document reads.

According to the agreement, Russia will use joint facilities free of charge.

"The naval base has full immunity from Syria’s civil and administrative jurisdiction. Its movable and immovable property is immune from search, seizure and other proceedings," the document adds.

Besides, the agreement stipulates that Russia will operate the naval base. "Russia has the right to send the necessary number of troops to maintain the naval facility," the document says.

On Monday, Putin visited the Hmeymim air base in Syria, announcing that the most well-trained terrorist groups active in the country had been defeated, and ordered the Russian Defense Ministry to begin the withdrawal of a significant part of the Russian troops from Syria.

Yepp. Normal.

Remember back when I said that if the US wanted to support secular rebels, then it should go with the kurds.

It took a while, but nice to see it get on board with that idea.

To bad it killed Nato's southern flank. But collateral damage is what it is.

DAMASCUS, SYRIA (1:44 A.M.) – An exchange deal was reached between the Damascus authorities and the ISIL fighters holed up in Yarmouk Camp in southern Damascus.

The exchange deal’s terms are that in return for the Syrian Army’s release of female ISIS members and wives ISIS will return the bodies of two government fighters killed in the recent clashes in Tadamon district, which neighbors Yarmouk Camp.

Those deals are commonplace between all sides of the Syrian war. Multiple deals are struck on a routine basis between the Syrian government, ISIS, and the rebel forces over the exchange of corpses between the warring factions.

============

Regarding the conflict having become more civilized and with a degree of trust between parties since 2013.

The advances mean Turkey is expecting 100-400k refugees from the Idlib province (400k is extrapolating the regime retaking all areas not covered by ceasefire agreements).
