Buoyed by mayoral votes, Venezuela socialists eye presidency race

December 10, 2017

CARACAS (Reuters) - President Nicolas Maduro has set his sights on Venezuela’s 2018 presidential election after the ruling Socialist Party as predicted dominated mayoral polls

The 55-year-old successor to Hugo Chavez said the government had won at least 90 percent of the 335 mayorships in Sunday’s election.

The latest official results gave him 21 of 23 state capitals as well as Caracas’ main district, with full results set to be announced later on Monday. No one doubted the socialists’ big win

The elections left Maduro the favorite to be the socialists’ candidate in next year’s presidential race

“We’re ready to compete!” he told cheering supporters in a Caracas square shortly before midnight on Sunday, next to a statue of Venezuela’s independence hero Simon Bolivar.

“2018 belongs to the ‘Chavistas,'” Maduro said, using the ruling movement’s name after his popular mentor and predecessor.

“This is the worst result for the opposition in any election during the ‘Chavista’ era,” said pollster Luis Vicente Leon.

“I think the current government can fix things if they are allowed to get on with it,” said mechanic Melix Jordan, 56, voting for the government in a rural part of Paraguana.

"Maduro said the three abstaining parties should be banned from participating in future elections."

election might not be the correct term, should they ban opposing parties

Yup, if only the opposition can accept the result, then the government can make Venezuela great again.

I think I heard somewhere that the opposition boycotted the election. If that is true, then it is their own fault that they lost the election. They gave up and gave the power to Maduro.

If you want to govern you have to participate. Right?

What happens when a country is mostly poor, dumb people.

All the Maduro supporters sound exactly like the average Trump supporter.

They are also poor and stupid. They should be a booming petro state like Norway or Saudi Arabia. Instead they are a basket case compared to their next door neighbor Colombia which has no oil and just wrapped up a 50 year long civil war. There is really no excuses for their mismanagement. They cant even blame the USA. Our only crime here is we keep their government on life support with loans ans by buying their oil.

Along with Trump leaving all options on the table in regards to attacking the country militarily.

It has pretty much exactly the same gdp as Colombia after contracting the venezuelian economy as projected in 2017.

It scores far better on both GINI and HDI.

I will go with poor and smart. Even when the shit totally hits the fan, the average joe does better in a more equal society than he would in a better functioning oligarchy.

I was checking out Cuba. Just to see how bad things could get. Turns out Cuba is doing better than Venezuela.

(wiki for all of this).

Its main issue is demographic. 2/3ds of the population is under the age of 35 (2011).

The birthrate is slowly falling toward 2.00.
