Russia's Lavrov lashes out at US at annual press conference

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov attacked the US in an annual press conference Monday, accusing Washington of issuing ultimatums and failing to recognise "the reality of the emerging multipolar world".

Lavrov said the past year had not been easy from a foreign policy perspective as he took questions on Syria, Ukraine, the Korean peninsula and other global issues, in a diplomatic round-up of 2017.

"UNFORTUNATELY, OUR AMERICAN COLLEAGUES AND THEIR ALLIES STILL WANT TO DO BUSINESS SOLELY ON THE BASIS OF ISSUING ULTIMATUMS AND DO NOT WANT TO LISTEN TO THE VIEWS OF OTHER CENTRES OF WORLD POLITICS," he said when asked about US President Donald Trump's position on the Iran nuclear deal.

"In fact they do not want to recognise the reality of the emerging multipolar world," Lavrov said.

Trump last week said the US would not reimpose nuclear sanctions on Iran for now, but would withdraw from the deal this year unless its terms were changed.

"(THE AMERICANS) RESORT TO METHODS THAT ARE, LARGELY, QUESTIONABLE AND UNSCRUPULOUS, IN ORDER TO CONTAIN THEIR COMPETITORS," LAVROV SAID.

"THEY USE A NUMBER OF THESE METHODS, FROM DEPLOYING A GLOBAL MISSILE DEFENCE SYSTEM TO UNILATERAL SANCTIONS, TO THE EXTRATERRITORIAL USE OF THEIR OWN LEGISLATION OR THREATS TO RESOLVE ANY INTERNATIONAL PROBLEMS SOLELY ACCORDING TO THEIR OWN SCENARIO."

LAVROV ALSO SAID THREATS COMING FROM WASHINGTON IN 2017 HAD "SERIOUSLY AGGRAVATED" TENSIONS IN DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE WORLD, including in North Korea.

As Trump prepares to mark a year in power, Lavrov said the actions of the current US administration were in some cases "more assertive" than under Barack Obama, "despite Trump's line during the election campaign".

The US was afraid of fair competition in various areas, including energy and the supply of gas to Europe, Lavrov said, adding that Washington was failing to contribute to the resolution of the conflict in Syria.

Russia launched a military intervention in Syria in 2015, propping up President Bashar al-Assad's regime after a revolt was crushed by a brutal crackdown.

Russia will not support U.S. bid to change Iran nuclear deal: Lavrov

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Monday Moscow will not support attempts by Washington to modify the Iran nuclear deal, arguing such a move could also complicate diplomacy over North Korea’s nuclear weapons program.

Lavrov spoke days after U.S. President Donald Trump said he would waive nuclear sanctions against Iran for the last time to give Washington and its European allies a chance to fix the “terrible flaws” of the 2015 nuclear deal.

“We will not support what the United States is trying to do, changing the wording of the agreement, incorporating things that will be absolutely unacceptable for Iran,” Lavrov told a news conference in Moscow.

Russia’s top diplomat, who stressed that Russia will work to preserve the existing Iran nuclear deal, also warned that the agreement’s collapse could be detrimental to dialogue with North Korea.

Lavrov suggested Pyongyang would look at how Iran had been treated by Washington and wonder if any deal it did with the United States on its own missile and nuclear program would hold or also be called into question.

“If the deal is put aside and Iran is told, ‘you keep up with your obligations or we will impose sanctions again’, then you have to see it from North Korea’s point of view,” said Lavrov, stressing the international community should approach the two countries’ nuclear programs in the same manner.

“They are being promised that sanctions will be lifted if they give up their nuclear program. They will give it up, but no one will lift the sanctions against Pyongyang.”

In separate comments on Monday, Ali Shamkhani, the secretary of Iran’s National Security Council, said Trump’s threats to withdraw from the nuclear deal were fanning “Iranophobia” and meant to deprive Tehran of the agreement’s economic benefits.

“Scaring the international community with the decisions of a mad man is a repetitive tactic that has proved to be ineffective,” Fars news agency quoted Shamkhani as saying.

Do you think that the US is a shithole country now when Russia is more rational, sane and reliable than the US is? And do you think that the free world should side with Russia now instead of with the alleged "unreliable shithole" who has fallen into the hands of the Saudi Islamic and the Jewish state? Discuss.

Sure to some a global threat. To others the best chance to end humanity's vice like grip on the resources of Earth and return it to a pleasant green world of innocent animals incapable of higher thought. Just as long as the radiation isn't too strong for those few thousand years of Earth's recovery after we nuke every major enemy city and they nuke every major enemy city of their own.

Think positive!

You don't need radiation to wipe out humanity. A biological weapon is enough.

but Trump is intrigued by the use of nuclear weapons (despite his claim that "There's nobody that understands the horror of nuclear better than me")

I'm hoping the people serving our country are smart enough to deal with Trump if he ever gets close to pushing the nuclear weapon. President Pence would only pardon that person anyways.

Trump initially accepted Putin's denial of that shoot down... then when pressed about our intel suggested maybe it was Russia but too far away for us to be concerned about

may Mueller find the reason for his mysterious Putin love
