She's a radical anarcho-socislist-feminist activist who led a rebellion against the protectorate. Her writings and aphorisms mean her philosophy - quellism - has become a pseudo religion. A sort of confuscianism *POSSIBLE SPOLIERS* In the tv series, they establish this with the book the rich guy gives Takeshi, and the museum exhibition. They also seem to have conflated her with a separate character who led the Envoy corps. In the books, the Envoys were protectorate special forces, Takeshi quits after they are defeated in a battle to squash a planetary rebellion at Innenin. In the tv series it seems Quell created the Envoys and the end of the Quellists rebellion replaces "Inenin" .

So either you can or haven't developed a tolerance, which means you're enjoying a mind fuck that probably appeals to you because it's the closest you're willing to get to drinking again, or you're a sad, attention seeking old man trying desperately to seem trendy. It's probably both. Most people who smoke, even occasionally, and get a 'full high' if we're going to describe your experience as such, tend to be functional. Those that aren't don't smoke... And tolerance varies. It can range from not getting high, to being able to consume more, to having to consume more, to just being able to function while high. For some that takes a while. We all chase the dragon, but nobody wants to ride it forever. Unless they've got a problem. Which again, alcoholic as you are, you do. Anyways, Hoods post was great. Three episodes into AC, am liking that the implications of the mcguffin are thought through better than I remember them being in the books. Am no liking that they have conflated Virginia (leader of the envoys) and Quell. Completely changes the balance of Takeshi's character, the context of Quellism and Quell herself.

Also I can see why they can't use both characters in the way the book does - it relies too much on inner monologuing to have these two voices spouting various bits of wisdom in his ear. Quell in the books sees violence as a necessary evil and is ambiguous about it though. Having her as not only a revolutionary philosopher activist but also a founder of a mystical ninja martial arts special forces corps is too much for me. Partially as the point about Quellism is that it's supposed to be a super practical humanistic approach to political and ways of living that anyone decent can live up to; in contrast to the impossible distribution of wealth in a capitalist society where the rich don't die. Conflating it with space ninjaism feels like it is going to break that. We shall see!

Was a little disappointed that things ended so tidy to some extent, but was also pleased that something meaningful happened. It will be interesting to see if/where they continue from here. Will they keep following Kovacs? Of course, this is a good SciFi show, so it will undoubtedly be unceremoniously cancelled without explanation. Or, in this case, not renewed.
