What a terrible hill to die on. Defending Polanski, and there really is no way for him to recover from this.

i'll agree on the word 'rape' part... there are excessively broad variations of use

Yeah, you shouldn't agree with anything Tarantino says. 13 year olds can't give consent, 13 year olds drunk and on drugs can't give consent. It is rape.

Come on, this is a semantic dispute. Hardly something he can never recover from.

Did he put his actress in a difficult situation? Sure, but nobody forced her to do the stunt. And this has nothing to do with the #MeToo movement, so I doubt anyone will care much. Just one of many directors to have an unsafe set. It won't be his undoing.

The important take:

Mt reads Jezebel.

And to be fair to sd, Jezebel's reporting quality is so shirty that they spent an inordinate amount of time rambling about Uma Thurman before finally proceeding to what should have been the lede. Women suck at everything.

Don't give any more clicks to Jezebel.

--------

Tarantino: No, that was not the case AT ALL. She wanted to have it and dated the guy and—

Quivers: She was 13!

Tarantino: And by the way, we’re talking about America’s morals, not talking about the morals in Europe and everything.

Stern: Wait a minute. If you have sex with a 13-year-old girl and you’re a grown man, you know that that’s wrong.

Quivers: ...giving her booze and pills...

Tarantino: Look, she was down with this.

Total tangent here, but CR I need to acknowledge that your guy won. O&A got fired from Sirius, they both hate each other now, they've been a complete disaster since 2014 and neither of them can put out a product that isn't total garbage. Howard > O&A.

that's being slightly unfair

his premise is the word 'rape' is too strong... with his belief that she was fine with the sex & was dating the guy (apparently her story has changed at various points, so hard to say what really happened)

Also Artie Lange does a show with Anthony now and is a complete disaster, I understand why Howard cut him loose now.

"Total tangent here, but CR I need to acknowledge that your guy won."

there is no need for that, since that competition wasn't real, it existed only for some o&a fans. This is not a shot at O&A, they had a following, and therefore they were solid entartainers. (Presumably, I never heard their show.) But if anyone, even causually, looks at the bodies of work, this fictional narrative of some competition disappears immediately. HS is a radio titan, even calling him Babe Ruth of radio is unfair since there are solid arguments about others being the best baseball player of all time, not Babe. There is no such argument in radio.

Artie Lange is a very funny man. A tragic figure tbs, but understandably so, if you ever heard the story of his father. There is not enough heroin on earth, to forget that kind of nightmnare

"his premise is the word 'rape' is too strong"

His premise is wrong. He was 44, got a 13 year old drunk and high on quaaludes, and fucked her in the ass.

If you're wondering whether or not Polanski should have gotten 30 in prison or not, just compare his actions to, say, Roy Moore.

Anyone have a TL:DR available? It just seemed to be pointless rambling so I stopped reading

tldr - tarantino doesn't believe it is rape if a 44 year old man gets a 13 year old drunk and high on Quaaludes and the sodomizes her because the 13 year old never explicitly told him to stop. Tarantino doesn't really give any ground, claims we shouldn't judge Polanski off of American morals, claims "13 year old party girls are down for it".

Basically comes off as super creepy/the fbi should nail him on something and get him to flip because he clearly knows about the oft rumored under age child sex ring in hollywood.

Also, the car crash with thurman is pretty gnarly, but that is all part of the industry and she shouldn't be too upset about the crash specifically. The way the studio handled it afterwards is odd though. One would assume they'd have gotten her thoroughly insured considering how physical the role was going to be.

"the 13 year old never explicitly told him to stop."

And in fact, the victim claimed she no to oral, vaginal, and anal at every point.

Well, yes, but Tarantino is going off Polanski's claim that she wanted to be his girlfriend and never said no. Obviously it doesn't matter. A 13 year old can't say yes to a 44 year old man, a 13 year old is still a child, their opinion is irrelevant.
