President Donald Trump has said he will sign off on steep tariffs on steel and aluminium imports next week, hitting producers like China.

Flanked by US metals executives at the White House, he said a 25% tariff would be placed on steel products, and a 10% tariff would be imposed on aluminium.

Mr Trump tweeted that the US was suffering from "unfair trade".

The US imports four times more steel than it exports, and is reliant on steel produced in China.

In Thursday's announcement, Mr Trump said, "we haven't been treated fairly by other countries", citing China.

What's the context?
Throughout his presidential campaign and since taking office, Mr Trump said cheap imports from China were harming the viability of US industry.

China isn't the only country to export steel to the US - 110 countries and territories do so. And China is only the 11th biggest biggest exporter to the US - Canada, Brazil, South Korea, Mexico and Russia are the five biggest.

Last year, the president ordered an investigation by Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross into "whether steel imports threaten to impair the national security", drawing a link between economic prosperity and the country's security.

Mr Ross' report was published last month. It said US national security was indeed threatened, and made three recommendations, one of which was putting in place a 24% tariff on all steel imports.

It also proposed adding a 7.7% tariff to all aluminium imports, among other options.

What's Trump said previously?
During his campaign, he said that foreign countries were "dumping vast amounts of steel all over the United States, which essentially is killing our steelworkers and steel companies".

On Thursday morning, he tweeted that "we must not let our country, companies and workers be taken advantage of any longer".

This is pretty much reciprocal. China has been using its tax money for years to subsidize steel production. Way more then anyone needs, and have been dumping it on the world market. Almost all of China's steel plants are operating at a loss.

So much the better for us, Aeros, if the Chinese want to subsidize American steel consumption.

These tariffs are bad. Nearly all tariffs are.

A few years before WWII Ike was given the task of writing what needed to be done to put America on a full war footing.

That writing put America on a war footing so quickly the war ended just 3 years 9 months after America entered the war.

Did you know we built about 100 aircraft carriers during the war? They were small and I think they were used for protecting the cargo and troop ship fleets.

Today, I doubt we would be so lucky. Anything major in the way of equipment would likely be built by someone on the other side.

We produce more than enough steel to fuel any war effort. We would ramp up production if we needed to.

Further, it's not likely we're going to be going to war with Canada any time soon, so one of our major steel suppliers will just keep on supplying.

Steel is just one item.

I know we have hundreds, if not thousands, of Abrams tanks that we keep making, only because they are made in a sector of the country where a strong legislator is from.

Those two little paragraphs are just symbolic of our readiness for a major ground war. A lot of our components are made overseas.

I'm just saying that could be a problem. We need to bring more of our manufacturing back home.

Just think about what it would be like if the European Union fell apart. Putin would surely find a way to capitalize on it.

Things do not always proceed in the manner we suppose they will.

For fuck sakes stupid.

This isn't just about war machines. It is about businesses, large and small including the operations of our economy and how it will be impacted but the big idiots Tariff. Where the majority of his own party has stood against it and advised against it.

Our war production as you keep referring back to, will not be an issue. As we have various contingencies that would cover. And as for this ridiculous fucking claim --

"A lot of our components are made overseas. "

This is patently false. Only truth to the matter is that there are various components that are made overseas that we do import, as well as China and Russia does as well. The CRS (Congressional Research Service) has reports indicated that Russian and China are doing what they can to upgrade their military for air and ground and various other combat systems. Though we spend a significant chunk of our budget on the military, we are ignoring various technological upgrades to compete. Not because of production overseas, but more along the lines of prioritize driven focus on what we need to do. Which in this case has been air superiority.

In fact the CRS also warns if we wanted to catch up to China and Russian we would have to rely upon BUYING foreign arms and vehicles to bolster our ground units.

However, back to your claim, alot of our components are not made overseas, and such reliance on those components would not be as difficult to obtain.

Surprised it took so long really. It was one of his biggest campaign promises. If you ever watched his rallies, he always only talked about two things: his dumb wall and trade protectionism.

The reason this is super retarded is because there is a mechanism in place to deal with unfair trade: the WTO. If you feel a country is dumping, you can appeal to the WTO and get multilateral sanctions applied to that product. It's more effective than one nation doing so because china can't just turn around and sell the same steel to someone else like japan who now has a competitive advantage in the production of steel products versus the US.

I'm pretty sure they've done so with chinese steel in the past and china had to stop subsidizing steel production so heavily.

But the example I provided is why lone-wolf tariffs are retarded and lead to a spiral of trade war and trade manipulation as individual countries keep one-upping each other. The last time it happened was during the great depression.

So yeah. Fuck trump. What a retard.

"Of course, it is. You just don't get it. "

I know your understanding just about any topic is very fucking limited. But read what I said as it would included, but also emphasize other elements as well. Which is totally the opposite of your claim.

Then I explained as to why and how it would effect other elements.

""Mr Ross' report was published last month. It said US national security was indeed threatened, and made three recommendations, one of which was putting in place a 24% tariff on all steel imports.

It also proposed adding a 7.7% tariff to all aluminium imports, among other options." "

Wilbur Ross the protectionist, do you know anything about this guy?

"In November 2017, leaked documents known as the Paradise Papers showed that Ross had failed to clearly disclose financial ties to Russian interests in his confirmation hearings."

Investments:

In 2002, Ross founded International Steel Group after purchasing the assets of several bankrupt steel companies. Ross had support from the local steelworkers union, negotiating a deal with them to "save" Pennsylvania's steel industry. Leo Gerard, international president of the United Steelworkers union stated about Ross that "he was open and accessible and candid and honest and he put a lot of money back into the mills, so literally tens of thousands of jobs were saved."[18] Ross sold International Steel Group to Mittal Steel Company for $4.5 billion, half in cash and half in stock, in April 2005.

Spare me his "analysis." As I said at the start about Ross, he is a protectionist of course he is going to recommend the tariffs as his lackeys only fairly recently invested millions in the steel industry only then for this event to occur.

I know your feeble mind can connect the god damn dots.

Way to drain the swamp, right?

I wish for once you would do a little bit a research before you comment on a topic that you clearly have not fucking clue about.

This is spectacularly dumb.

1. Principle economic benefit of trade to a country is importing. You get goods (which is what wealth should really be measured in) for bits of paper, and you get them for less input than if you made them domestically (or otherwise nobody would be importing goods).

The only purpose for exporting - giving away stuff you've produced for bits of paper - is to use those bits of paper to pay for imports.

2. If you are going to use tarrifs, it's to protect an industry. Normally this means protecting jobs, i.e. keeping people doing an activity they are not efficient at. This normally means you are treating the symptom rather than the cause - low productivity.

Sometimes it can be used sensibly to protect nascent industries while they get off the ground. Sometimes it can be used if a country is in such dire straits that there's nothing else to stop mass unemployment. This doesn't normally apply to a mature developed country with an economy over a certain size. Sometimes it can be used if you don't have a strong enough f.ex earnings (tourism, investment and exports) to ensure you import the sensible things.

Generally though, the free market view such things as grossly distorting.

The consequences of tariffs is to make a county poorer (less stuff produced).

2. Tarrifing low value commodities rather than high value goods is absurd. You are tilting your country to producing low value stuff!

"You know, it is interesting how every time Trump comes up with something new or different he is laughed at until it goes platinum."

And you want to know why I hound you to do a little research. This is not new. In fact the most recent tariffs that occurred, relying on my memory was under GWB. And the results were disastrous;

The Bush 2002 steel tariff was a political issue in the United States regarding a tariff that President George W. Bush placed on imported steel on March 5, 2002 (took effect March 20). The tariffs were lifted by Bush on December 4, 2003. Research shows that the tariffs adversely affected US GDP and employment.

According to a 2005 review of existing research, all studies on the tariffs "find that the costs of the Safeguard Measures outweighed their benefits in terms of aggregate GDP and employment as well as having an important redistributive impact."

Steel production rose slightly during the period of the tariff. The protection of the steel industry in the United States may have had unintended consequences and perverse effects. A study from 2003 that was paid for by CITAC, a trade association of businesses that use raw materials, found that around 200,000 jobs were lost as a result.

"In 1985, the USFL voted to move from a spring to a fall schedule in 1986 to compete directly with the NFL. This was done at the urging of New Jersey Generals majority owner Donald Trump and a handful of other owners as a way to force a merger between the leagues. As part of this strategy, the USFL filed an anti-trust lawsuit against the National Football League in 1986, and a jury ruled that the NFL had violated anti-monopoly laws. However, in a victory in name only, the USFL was awarded a judgment of just $1, which under anti-trust laws, was tripled to $3. This court decision effectively ended the USFL's existence. The league never played the 1986 season, and by the time it folded, it had lost over $163 million."

So now when the stock markets are plumeting, do you think that Dishonest Trump’s cronies are buying stocks cheap, and then in a day or three Trump will say that he was only joking about tariffs and trade war, and the stocks will rise again?

It looks like Trump may be joking about the tariffs. Trump is now considering to scrap the tariffs for Mexico and Canada:

”Tariffs on Steel and Aluminum will only come off if new & fair NAFTA agreement is signed.”
