When the authors broke down the data further, they provided a clear picture of what certain campus demographics prioritize. About 61 percent of men favored free speech rights far more than a diverse and inclusive campus (39 percent). Conversely, 64 percent of women believe that diversity is more important, versus 35 percent who picked free speech.

Differences emerge with race, too. White students tended to value free speech more -- 52 percent compared to 47 percent who picked diversity and inclusion. About 68 percent of black students, meanwhile, said diversity was more important compared to 31 percent for free speech.

What good is diversity if there isn’t free speech?

According to progressives, we're all going to be pansexual brown-skinned Spanglish speakers in a hundred years anyway. Diversity is overrated.

Why would you ever have to choose between diversity and free speech?

Yeah, both is important and you can have both.

You should ask the protestors who are trying to interrupt the next speaker at whatever university or de-platform evolutionary biologist trying to have a panel discussion about sex differences, or get people fired from google.

It is fairly simply fellas, if people are allowed to speak freely, chance rise exponentially with time that things will be said that make certain people offended and ultimately unwelcome, which may or may not be the intention. It isn't rocket science.

Fred was always the most likely to leave, no need to rub it in jergul.

See, women may be the quickest to leave, but they're also fickle and won't stick to their choice.

"What good is diversity if there isn’t free speech?"

That's a great question to ask all the groups that were excluded when the US adopted its Bill of Rights.

Without diversity, it isn't free speech, it's just your speech.

Murder is correct, if we were to accept that the value in what people have to say, is rooted in the kind of superficial ”diversity” like penis/vagina, white/black. It isn’t. In 2018 free speech is a universal right in the US and other places where there are free speech rights and it covers racist speech. You can use your rights to be a douchbag, murder has done this for his entire existence on UP.

"Without diversity, it isn't free speech, it's just your speech."

Free speech isn't a whole bunch of voices, it is the right for any voice. There's no need to play off this diversity vs. free speech thing, because free speech already includes every US citizen.

There's nothing wrong with diversity. But free speech isn't at odds with it. It isn't really at odds with very much, except maybe tyrrany and societal subservient pressures. Is the drive for diversity using either of those mechanisms? If yes, then perhaps we have a problem with the method of implementation.

I think the answer lies in how willing the different groups are to debate the issues, in other words "talk" about the differences. There is one side that consistently uses shut down tactics and denial of speech, let alone engages in any debates. It is not right wingers and conservatives. Sadly it is almost exclusively coming from the left. There is literally no debate panel discussion on even remotely contentious topics that is not interrupted by the purple haired people with septum rings, it has become part of the gig. Label a speaker alt-right and they will show up banging on windows and pulling fire alarms.
