N. Korea cancels high-level talks with S. Korea over military drill

SEOUL, May 16 (Yonhap) -- North Korea said Wednesday it is canceling high-level talks with South Korea planned for later in the day due to ongoing military exercises between the South and the United States.

The North's Korean Central News Agency said the Max Thunder drills between the South Korean and U.S. air forces are a rehearsal for invasion of the North and a provocation amid warming inter-Korean ties.

The high-level talks were meant to take place on the southern side of the truce village of Panmunjom to discuss follow-up measures to the two Korean leaders' summit last month.

The United States never claimed the military exercises would stop prior to the talks.

As a matter of fact, we made it clear that we would change nothing prior to the talks. This is starting to look like the North Korea we are all too familiar with.

Mark this: if they pull out of the talks PRESIDENT Trump *****WILL USE***** military force to shut down NK's nuclear program.

It will be sudden and devastating.

Wouldn't it be dishonest North Korea on this one? They were told the military drills were going to happen and said that it wouldn't matter.

All this is happening is Kim is testing to see what he can get away with.

You have no idea what they were told or what they agreed to.

I think there is just more than one thing here.

First they saw the USA violating the UNSC resolution on Iran’s nuclear program and the USA imposing new sanctions on Iran despite that everyone had signed the deal.

Then this fool Bolton comes along and says that North Korea will receive the Libya treatment. Tthe US had an agreement with Libya that if they abandon their WMD they would protect the Libyan regime. Now, what happened to Ghadaffi?

The US has also said that they are not looking destroy the regime in NK. How much do you think USA’s words or any signed agreement is worth?

NK has showed good faith by releasing US citizens, in return the US holds military drills.

The Commander in Chief is not the smartest jew in the US administration.

probably offended by all the bragging too

also were reports of Trump wanting to pull military families before olympics (which would have ratcheted up tensions, but the adults talked him out of it) & McMaster not wanting to give Trump military options as he was worried Trump would want to go ahead and do it

as we all know... attacking is the ONLY thing Trump has ever wanted to do (peace prize indeed)

If it becomes necessary to use conventional weapons against North Korea it will be nothing like Syria.

There is little that Syria could do in the way of retaliation. A hundred missiles against their WMD and that was the end of it.

But NK has hundreds of long-range artillery pointed at Seoul plus a large and well trained military close to the border. Of course, we have about two divisions there. (That's a guess, I don't know what the army's TO&E is today but when I was in the army 28,000 troops was close to two divisions.) And the South Koreans have a large and well-trained military also.

So if we mount a surprise attack it will be massive and severe in order to limit South Korean civilian casualties.

You would need a UNSC resolution to be able to legally launch an attack on another State.

Trump would never launch a war against anyone that could fight back. He couldn't survive the body count.

"But NK has hundreds of long-range artillery pointed at Seoul plus a large and well trained military close to the border."

NK has a large and poorly trained army. Not that it matters since they wouldn't care about casualties. Just fewer mouths to feed.

"You would need a UNSC resolution to be able to legally launch an attack on another State."

We're still technically at war with N.Korea ... and UN authorization only applies to nations without a veto on the security council.

The UN is a joke.

Aren't we well beyond the point of pretending that we need UN authorization for anything by now?

paramounted - You would need a UNSC resolution to be able to legally launch an attack on another State.

Why? A state of war between the United Nations and North Korea has existed since NK invaded South Korea in 1950.

An attack would simply be the next, and hopefully the last, battle of that war.

However, if it becomes necessary you had better brush up on your fighting skills. Sweden may be needed to supply more than a hospital this time around. Especially if China sends in troops again.

The consequences are continued restrictions with a very likelihood of a conventional resurgence of the war if NK starts testing again.

Waste of time negotiating with N. Korea. They are past masters at dragging things out over the most minute detail. We all know that the Twitterman has no patience with details.

My guess is the talk will happen and both leaders will tell their respective countries something to appease the masses. Frankly I would be surprised if they can agree to what time to have a snack so I hope I am surprised.

Trump says no 'Libya model' for denuclearization of NKorea

US President Donald Trump on Thursday tried to put his summit with North Korea's Kim Jong Un back on track, saying he would not seek to implement a so-called "Libya model" for denuclearization that would force Pyongyang to give up its arms and see Kim ousted.
Pyongyang on Tuesday threatened to cancel the summit set for June 12 in Singapore, blaming US demands for "unilateral nuclear abandonment."

That was a reference to comments made by Trump's National Security Advisor John Bolton, who referred to the "Libya model from 2003, 2004" as a blueprint for the denuclearization promised by North Korea.

In late 2003, then Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi agreed to the elimination of his country's nuclear program and chemical weapons arsenal to gain sanctions relief.

The reference was seen in Pyongyang as unfortunate at best: after giving up his atomic program, Kadhafi was killed in 2011 in an uprising backed by NATO bombing.

Kim "will get protections that will be very strong," Trump told reporters."He'd be in his country and running his country."

http://afp...learization-of-nkorea/a/WL1kBQ

The problem, as we has seen with Trump and the Republicans, is that one can not trust the US. When America has got a new president, there is a risk that agreements and deals made earlier will be broken. The US is simply not trustworthy. A lawyer would advise anyone to not sign a deal with the US. Because it may not be worth the ink and the paper.

Trump says one thing, but his security advisor Bolton says another thing.

How can NK know what the US really wants?

Trump will have to fire Bolton or have him to apologize and swear on his mother's grave that the NK will not get the Libya model.

"Kim "will get protections that will be very strong," Trump told reporters."He'd be in his country and running his country."

Yeah, he be running his country until the US attacks the regime, which will be easier when NK has given up their nukes.

"Yeah, he be running his country until the US attacks the regime, which will be easier when NK has given up their nukes."

Exactly. Kim would have to be Homer Simpson level stupid to fall for this nonsense. His response should be "pack up your troops and go home, and you won't have to worry about our nukes."

How great is this for the young Kim? Trump is giving him the meeting, one on one, that his dad and granddad demanded for decades, with no success, because no US president wanted to legitimize them.
