So, Syfy commissions the best sci fi series since battlestar galactica.

Not quite game of thrones, but damn close. Hard sci fi in a near future setting, with a good mix of action, detective noire, and political intrigue with dense, immersive and realistic worldbuilding.

And of course they cancelled it. To make, what Sharknado XXXIVII?

I'll admit I'm not sure what this thread is about. But for your information, Sharknado is only up to film VI, and it sounds f*#$ing amazing:

"Sharknado 6 (2018)[edit]

Sharknado 6 is set to be released on August 19, 2018.[1] Tara Reid, Ian Ziering and Cassie Scerbo are set to return, and the film will feature time travel, Nazis, dinosaurs, knights, and Noah's ark.[14]"

The Expanse.

Apparently it cost Syfy an arm and a leg, and they only got money from TV broadcasting, not streaming. So still a terrible company, but for not the reason you thought.

The books the show is based off get way deeper and aremuch harder to represent with a shoestring budget. It is maybe fir the best the expanse was not renewed.

Just like bsg's last 1.5 seasons were god-awful; tv is usually best cut short.

Dukhat:

It doesn't look to be done on a shoestring. And the reviews are good.

It's like cancelling GoT half way through season 3.

NOoo00oooOO0oooOoo!

NO! NO! NO! You fools! You idiots!

I am never watching a TV series outside HBO again, or that has finished. This is the third TV show that I get hooked on and then gets cancelled mid show. BURN IN HELL SYFY!

Syfy does this all the time, so it should not be a surprise.

That said, The Expanse probably has an OK chance of being picked up by another channel.

They killed The Expanse?

No, it doesn't, WoO,
because syfy is Canadian, and the cast is mostly also Canadian, and the thing about Canadians is that they employ minorities (the Pilot for example is Iranian, and the Martian Marine is a Kiwi)
The whole premise of the show is how different everyone is

well Nim you know what I'm talking about very well. In the end, if the show would have aired in the US originally, you'd see everyone was white as snow or as black as prejudice.

I don't really, but then again I have no idea how the characters are portrayed in the books. His character in the show has the surname Kamal. Some kind of Martian mongrel for sure and he was some kind of Texan accent (?). The UN woman is judging from the cloths and name some kind of hindu. It is a plausible depiction of the human melting pot colonizing space, with new "ethnicities" and identities replacing the old ones.

Not sure why being filmed in Canada would be a barrier to entry for someone else picking up the show.

But yeah, Syfy does this all the time. Cancel good shows, order more Wynonna fucking Earp.

It’s an unrealistic depiction of the future where there are still real distinguishing features, when even now they are blurring and fading (does Microsoft’s CEO have an Indian clothing arrangement or a western style?)

A politician in the UN could, sure. A CEO for a US corporation, maybe not. If you look at immigrant groups in the US, you see that certain aspect of the home culture not only linger on forever, but becomes part of the new culture, like the food and yes clothing.

I like the reality set forth in Disc World. Louis Wu a combination of all races, he looks dark as well as white, slanted as well as not.

Disc World? That's Prachet. Only Louis Wu I can think of is from Niven's known space novels.

And now I just realised you meant Ringworld.

Are you telling me they made a fucking ringworld series?

Amazon is doing the Culture Series. That could be good. Or really really bad. As long as they Don't Skimp on the Gravitas.

no, they haven't (yet?)

According to recent reports, Amazon executives are in talks to pick up "The Expanse" — the space drama recently canceled by Syfy channel— for a fourth season.

Variety.com confirmed with sources yesterday (May 21) that Amazon is considering picking up the series, which is produced and financed by Alcon Television Group. Amazon already owns U.S. streaming rights for the show, while Netflix has international rights. (Syfy had first-run airing rights in the U.S.)

Jeff Bezos, Amazon's CEO, may join the celebrities (and an astronaut!) who are diehard fans of the series: According to a report posted yesterday on The Hollywood Reporter, "Sources say Bezos is a big fan of the book and was livid that the TV series went to NBCUniversal-owned Syfy. The move is said to have ignited Bezos' demand that Amazon Studios brass find the company's version of 'Game of Thrones'."

i wouldn't trust that he did this just cause he could. Amazon has wanted a flagship TV series for a while. They paid a billion dollars to make a LOTR series because they want to be competitive with HBO/Netflix.

A good business opportunity for Bezos to save a show he very much enjoys? Yeah, was too good to not happen.
