The European council president, Donald Tusk, said: “Dear America, appreciate your allies. After all you don’t have that many.”

He should appreciate us. We've been paying their way for a long time now.

does it concern you at all that Trump is more welcome in Russia than all of Europe... and North America?

Nope, he will work things out and America will be better off in the end.

maybe he is adhering to what Michael Corleone said. Keep your friends close, but enemies closer.

And we should all know by now what President Trump says before an event is by design over the top. When they sit at the table he dials back the rhetoric. Simply his style.

which friends is he keeping close? just Israel?

and there's no indication he considers Russia an enemy in any way, he tweeted once something on Syria, that's been it... & is still suggesting they didn't do any election interference

this week will be a disaster

"When they sit at the table he [strike]dials back the rhetoric[/strike] concedes everything."

Fixed that for you, kargen.

We shall see.

I don't like the way he does things but I'm not slobbering all over myself like tumbleweed does just hoping President Trump will fuck up.

The other nations pledged to pay 2% and they should honor those pledges. If they do not then why should we honor our commitment?

"The other nations pledged to pay 2% ..."

No they didn't. They pledged to increase military spending to 2% of GDP ... eventually.

Donald tusk is an authoritarian dickbag heading a make believe empire with delusions of grandeur.

The eurocrats are livid that the USA does not respect their authority. Even more livid that the current administration is supported by political factions in the USA that have openly stated they want to ruin any effort to turn the EU into a federal union.

It's actually interesting to watch. I don't think Brussels ever factored America into their EU integration plans. They seem shocked that Ethnic English, Poles, Italians, Swedes, Germans, Scots, Irish, etc in the USA have reacted with incandescent fury over the migrant crisis and the EU scheme to erase their homelands. This had bled into actual U.S. foreign policy.

I mean Ffs, the sole legislative body, the European Commission is the lawmaking force and it is completely unelected. The EU parliament is a fig leaf. The EU requires adherence to all writs and warrants issued, to the point where the dust h can order the arrest of British citizens and hold them indefinitely without charge or trial (something they are doing right now). This violates Habeus Corpus, but that is okay as the EU does not recognise the principle.

The insitution has far exceeded its intended mandate of economic integration and preventing the French and Germans from fighting. It has become an authoritarian abomination that is limited only by its super national structure. The cynic in me believes the desire of Brussels to import hordes of migrants is so they can undermine the nation states and plow ahead with their own stated goal of forming a federal union headed by an unelected council of commissioners who rule on behalf of a people too stupid to make their own decisions.

You mean like the US? The majority of Americans did not vote Republican in the Senate or House to represent them and Trump came in a distant third.

The EU has flaws like any diverse organization hundreds of millions of people but it's leading the way in Net neutrality and upholding human rights.

the american first president.. george washington.. said in farewell address.. dear america.. “It is our true policy to steer clear of permanent alliances with any portion of the foreign world”

the american writer of declaration of independence.. thomas jefferson.. said in first inaugural address.. dear america.. “peace, commerce, and honest friendship with all nations, entangling alliances with none”

these american foundational policies of rejecting anything but temporary wartime allies was venerated and followed until the formation of nato when america was at its zenith.. and after which america has been in a rate of relative decline every bit as rapid as its rate of growth had been from the foundation of the republic until late 1940s

So Putin and Trump are only doing everything to save us from the EU commision?

It doesn’t sound like a fair deal that the USA must do all the work while the Europeans are laughing at Trump and enjoying the WC. Trump should tweet something. About how unfair everything is.

"They pledged to increase military spending to 2% of GDP ... eventually."

Well maybe eventually has arrived. Two percent should be doable after all they aren't just a bunch of third world countries.

This shock and awe prelude to meetings only works a couple of times, even a fucking dog is smart enough to see patterns so overt and over the top.

I am amazed by the people still trying to make out Trump to be some tactical genious. People acclimate, yesterdays novelty is todays normal.

It is UNFAIR that European Nato members should pay as much as 2%. The US benefits the most from Nato. They use our lands as a base to protect itself from Russia. Usually the US does not want Russia to influence and dominate Europe because it would weaken the US.

It is the US who should pay more.

Meanwhile, Aeros ignores Trump's attempts, along with lackeys, to instill some authoritarian principles or acts here. But EU be damned!

OMG Russians at my throat, help me to break free!

http://www...-russian-captive-idUSKBN1K032D

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump accused Germany of being a “captive” of Russia on Wednesday as Western leaders gathered in Brussels for a NATO summit where Trump wants Europeans to pay more for their own defense.

In a startling public outburst against one of Europe’s main military powers, Trump told NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg that Germany was wrong to support a new $11-billion Baltic Sea pipeline to import Russian gas while being slow to meet targets for NATO spending to protect against Russia.

“We’re supposed to be guarding against Russia and Germany goes out and pays billions and billions of dollars a year to Russia,” Trump said in the presence of reporters at a pre-summit meeting at the residence of the U.S. ambassador to Belgium.

Trump, who later arrived at NATO’s new billion-dollar headquarters in his presidential limousine, appeared to substantially overstate German reliance on Russian energy and to imply the German government was funding the pipeline, which Berlin says is a commercial venture.

With tensions in the Western alliance running high over Trump’s trade tariffs on European steel and his demands for more contributions to ease the burden on U.S. taxpayers, the latest remarks fueled concerns among allies over the U.S. role in keeping the peace that has reigned since World War Two.

Baltic leaders fearful of any repeat of Russia’s annexation of Crimea called for unity as they arrived at the summit, while Slovakia’s President Andrej Kiska said his country was “one of the good guys” because he was increasing defense spending.

Those comments underscored the risks to Trump’s strategy by dividing allies between those who spend more on defense and those who do not, such as Belgium, Spain, Italy and Luxembourg, but who contribute with troops to NATO missions.

Germany only made a good deal with Russia. I bet Trump is jealous.

Also, having a good relationship with Russia is good, right? Didn't Trump say that?

"
“Germany is totally controlled by Russia because they are getting 60 to 70 percent of their energy from Russia.” That seemed to misstate German energy use - about 20 percent of which comes from by oil and gas imports from Russia.
"

who could've guessed Trump would "misstate" things...

Dependence on Russian gas worries some – but not all – European countries

Gazprom rattled the European Union by cutting – then restoring –Ukraine's gas supply this week.
MARCH 6, 2008

BRUSSELS — A month after Russia cut off gas supplies to the Ukraine for the first time in 2006, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that the European Union – which gets 40 percent of its gas from Russia – needed to develop a common energy policy over the next 15 years to guarantee supply security.
