FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Miami Beach police say they arrested a 72-year-old man who threatened to burn down his condominium building because he was angry at his Jewish neighbors.

Police charged Walter Stolper with attempted murder Friday.

Officers responded to the apartment complex on Thursday afternoon after receiving reports that Stolper had threatened to burn down the building and wanted to "kill all Jews," according to the police report.

When officers arrived, they said they found Stolper in the building's parking garage moving gas containers from a shopping cart, and they smelled gas from his car.

Police said Stolper had already poured eight containers of gas down the building's trash chute from the 15th floor - the same floor that he lived in - and that residents had smelled gas fumes throughout the building.

Inside his apartment, police found two black electrical fans and "books with Nazi ideology," the report stated. Police said they also found a storage room in the building linked to Stopler with 28 additional containers "with gasoline, sulfur powder, and potassium nitrate."
After his arrest, Stolper told police, "I bought the gas to make a small BBQ."

Police said that Stolper's motivation appeared to be anger about being served eviction papers and anger toward his Jewish neighbors. The police report says Stolper, who is from Wisconsin native, is a business owner. He was in custody at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami.
