Before going to Russia to meet with Putin, Trump declares the EU an enemy:

"I think the European Union is a foe," Trump says ahead of Putin meeting in Helsinki

Asked about the meeting with Putin, Trump said:

"I'll let you know after the meeting," promising "nothing bad" is going to come out of the world leaders' discussion.

It is like the USA wants the EU to join with China and crush the USA in an epic trade war.

"LONDON — Prime Minister Theresa May on Sunday revealed the advice President Trump had given her on how to negotiate Britain’s withdrawal from the European Union: Go straight to court.

Mrs. May was asked by the BBC about comments Mr. Trump made both in an interview in the British tabloid The Sun and later at a news conference on Friday at Chequers, the prime minister’s country residence, northwest of London.

“He told me I should sue the E.U.,” Mrs. May said."

I'm surprised that his advice wasn't to stay in the EU but tell the British people that they left, and label any news report revealing the truth as fake news.

Lol calm down mounte

For starters China does not have allies, it has interests. Secondly there is not a solitary damn thing the EU could do to America, even with China, that the US could not do back 10 times worse.

Just let Trump run his mouth.

”For starters China does not have allies”

Wrong. Trump is pushing us together. China and EU are allies now. USA has declared us enemies.

”China has interests”

Correct. We have a common interest now. To crush the USA.

We are going to stop trading with USA and only trade with China and Japan. EU and Japan is gonna sign the free trade deal of the century any day now. Who is the USA gonna trade with when Europe and Asia won’t trade with you?

in same interview as the 'EU is a foe', he stated the DNC should be ashamed of themselves for being hacked & again that the 'witch hunt' is hurting our ability to have good relations with Russia

yup... still no criticism of Russia... just that our rudely investigating their attack on us is causing problems

Did you go to the Nevil Chamberlain school of world order?

Aeros,
Your star is descending. You can feel it, you started to feel it during Obama, and when this is over, you will realize it actually started during the first Bush presidency.

American foreign policy the last 3 decades (since the end of the cold war) has been inconsistent and driven by an ideological battle instead of a sense of realism and the search for pragmatic outcomes. Every time your presidency changed party, American plotted a new foreign policy course, increasingly as a way to differentiate away from the previous government, until, until it went full retard.

And here we are Murica, here we fucking are, old friends are new adverseries, old enemies are new fuck buddies, but the party will reach its’ end and you will realize that your new fuck buddies gave you AIDS.

Nim:

You know, thinking about it I'm not sure it's the other way around (I don't think America's decline is inevitable other than in a relative sense and could have been much, much flatter):

Their star is descending more because of the rot in their elites values - a focus on narrow advantage and short termism.

It's infected their politics, particularly republicans, where they will break norms and institutions to win tactical advantage - to the point they have basically come to fundamentally believe rule by the other party is illegitimate while they themselves are taking bungs from foreign powers.

And in business, the issue is less the Chinese demanding tech transfers but more the business leaders willingly doing so in order to win a quick buck on reduced production costs - because of course it's paid with other peoples long term value and they benefit from the short term share bump.

I wonder when sociologists look back at this if the role of business school in setting this culture will be understood.

Essentially both the failings of the political elite and the business class can be viewed as a principal-agent problem. Attempts to use rules to constrain these with a constitutional framework are too easily subverted.

In the end, accountability to the public AND a well informed public debate in a common forum is key to health democracy which is why echo-box media (initially cable TV, but platform based media is even worse) is so dangerous as it can break this by fragmenting public life and discourse into such tiny segments that the agents of the people have more concentration.

Treating Foreign Policy as a signalling mechanism is the consequence of these dynamics I think.

International order for 4 centuries has been based on non-interference in the internal affairs of others and respect for sovereignty. Russia has violated this norm by seizing Crimea and by interfering in the 2016 US election. We must deal w Putin’s Russia as the rogue state it is
