The first target: the operator of a website selling everything from SS bed linens to a can of peanuts styled as Zyklon B, the notorious deadly gas used in the Auschwitz-Birkenau gas chambers. German prosecutors confirmed they are investigating the man, Udo Weiß from Uckermark in northeastern Germany, for incitement and other crimes punishable by up to five years in prison. Two German newspapers also identified the man as the brother of a politician with the populist far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD), who represents the party in the state parliament of Brandenburg. Public broadcaster RBB reported that Weiß was found after the Prosecutor's Office in Neuruppin in the state of Brandenburg tracked down his bank accounts in the Baltic States and postal service providers he used to ship good from Spain to Germany. Tracking social media activity, the prosecutors found also customers in Russia and the UK. Other products offered on his online shop www.reichsversand.com included busts and portraits of Hitler and other top-ranking Nazis, wooden chairs for children decorated with incorporated Nazi imperial eagle symbol, swastika balloons “for children over 3”, bed sheets for “dreams of the Reich” and general Nazi memorabilia. RBB report noted that the prices for these objects always ended with 88 cents -- like €18.88, €38.88 or €14.88 -- a known neo-Nazi code for HH, or “Heil Hitler.” “Attention, not poison gas,” reads the product description next to a “Zyklon B” can of peanuts sold for €4.88. “Peanuts in especially lovely packaging. We hear the do-gooders mafia is crying and accusing of [it] of bad taste! The opposite is true -- these are tasteful delicious peanuts of the best quality!” Weiß is also selling Nazi-themed rip-offs of famous alcohol brands, such as “Heil Hitler” beer with a logo resembling the Dutch brand Heineken, and the herbal liquor "Reichsjägermeister” – “Reich’s hunting master” in German, referring to a title once held by Hitler’s henchman Hermann Göring. The German spirit maker Jägermeister, whose liquor was counterfeited, in also now joining the legal battle. The local newspaper Berliner Morgenpost reported that the company is planning to sue Weiß for copyright infringement. Weiß apparently was already charged in 2011 with the crime of spreading far-right propaganda and in 2015 was sentenced to one year probation, but managed to delay the finalizing of the verdict with sick notes and no-shows. His sentencing in this case is now set for September 20.
