Which means that products using it - of which this one brand of matches is one such product - have either had to substitute an alternative compound or discontinue the product. This is like describing banning asbestos as banning fire retardant panels. Sam falls for tabloid shit like this every time because he's an idiot.

The EU, with its British MEPs, it's British commissioner, it's British representation on the council, it's British judges etc. is empowered to regulate various things in the UK thanks to British legislation giving it power to do so. This arrangement being due to the single market policy - which is a little like your interstate commerce rule - a policy dreamed up by Thatcher's government and pushed through by the UK precisely because removing the basis for non tarrifs barriers is essential for reducing trade friction and achieving a level of economic efficiency beyond simple "free trade agreement" as it removes the need for customs and customs checks. When we achieve the supposed nirvanah of leaving the EU, any match manufacturer will enjoy the bounteous and righteous freedom to choose to use carcinogens banned in the EU to manufacture matches, though in practice they will conform to EU standards so they can sell matches there, it being a bigger market than the UK, only then they will also be subject to checks at the border, increasing their relative cost and losing market share. All without British MEPs, British Commissioners, and the British govt on the council to represent our interests. Truly, we will be restored to our full theoretical sovereignty to do exactly whatever the EU (or US) determines in product, financial and other standards or not participate. Sovereignty = choice between options. Power = setting those options. Leaving the EU is an exercise in trading real power for the formal trappings of sovereignty.
