I was still a kid back when Kofi Annan took over the UN. Back then the world seemed to be so different; freedom and democracy were spreading across the globe, the countries of the international community were learning how to live with and collaborate with one another, and we were moving past the era of major wars and destructive conflicts. Sure, there were some small-scale threats from people like Saddam and Milosevic, but could be easily be kept in check and contained by the global world order. As the head of the United Nations, Kofi was the embodiment of this new world order, a hopeful era of peace and cooperation where countries would work together to solve their differences and advance humankind.

Was the outlook completely naive? Of course. Even if you take off the rose-colored glasses of post-Cold War elation and speculation that we were approaching the "end of history," the world at large never operated in this manner. But in retrospect there was a good level of optimism, at least in the US, about the future of the world.

And then you grew up and learn a few things about the world that ruined your sense of naivety, while 9/11 and the War on Terror killed off any pretense of idealism that existed at the end of the previous century. Now that optimism is gone, and the idea of countries cooperating at the UN sound like a total joke.

Anyway, RIP.
