Men attracted to emotionally unstable women, preferably no older than 18, studies show

This week’s peer-reviewed portrayal of fragile masculinity comes to you from the journal Science Advances, which recently published a depressing new study about online dating. Researchers looked at nearly 200,000 heterosexual users and found that while men’s sexual desirability peaks at age 50, women hit their prime at 18. And then it’s all downhill from there apparently. Can I just remind you that 18-year-olds are teenagers, and so this study is basically saying that straight men don’t find women attractive; they like girls.

#NotAllMen, I’m sure. However, this isn’t the first study to find men are fixated on women a lot younger than them. A 2010 study by OKCupid found that “the median 30-year-old man spends as much time messaging teenage girls as he does women his own age”. No doubt Roy Moore might have a thing or two to say about that.

While these studies may focus on sexual relations, they’re yet another reminder that we’re facing a crisis of masculinity that is reverberating across every aspect of our society. The far right is dominated by men, many of whom seem to be searching for a sense of identity. For feminism to get anywhere we must seriously address how we think about masculinity.

Andrew Cuomo, New York’s governor, has finally agreed to debate gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon; the two will face off later this month. Nixon has accused Cuomo of being a diva about the debate, saying he has completely dictated its format. Apparently Cuomo has been very insistent that the debate must be seated, which has a lot of people intrigued. Is he really that afraid of standing against Nixon?

Sisterhood of the traveling Trumps
Omarosa Manigault Newman continued to play the media like a fiddle this week, releasing excerpts of conversations she taped while at the White House. One of these is a phone recording between Manigault Newman and Eric Trump’s wife, Lara Trump, offering her a $15,000 job on Donald Trump’s re-election campaign. The offer came after Manigault Newman was fired, and some might consider it hush money. Lara Trump responded to claims the Trumps were trying to buy Manigault Newman’s silence with a sad statement about how “[w]oman to woman, I shared a connection with Omarosa”. Lara Trump lamented that the former White House official was “welcomed into the family as a friend and trusted confidant” and, with other women on the campaign tour, developed a “sisterhood bond that is unlike any I have experienced in my life”. Nothing brings the gals together quite like plotting to help their patriarchs overturn their rights to bodily autonomy, eh!

What are your opinions on this damning piece of evidence for the male identity crisis?

"Researchers looked at nearly 200,000 heterosexual users and found that while men’s sexual desirability peaks at age 50, women hit their prime at 18."

I don't know how to respond to this other than to say that it sounds like a load of crap. Men are attracted to young women? Duh! But 18 years old? I'm sure that some men like them that young, but most men I know would be more interested in women in their 20s or 30s (or 40s) than teenage girls.

And men reaching their peak of desirability at 50? I don't think so. Does that sound right to anybody? Again, I'd put that number in the 30s or 40s, but certainly not 50.

Maybe that's just a creepy OKCupid thing.

I'm sorry but I can't take any of this stuff seriously.

Yes, it's well documented that you're readily willing to ignore facts that disagree with your opinions.

I can imagine that a lot of men prefer 18 year old women because they are young, tighter and more, let's say gullible, than a woman who has been around the block a few times.

Noone should take this seriously!!!! That is the point, men have desired younger women since prehistory it isn’t a recent phenomena. It is associated with fertility, which drops relatively quickly after 30. An older man is associated with stability, lower aggressivity and generally have higher status than younger males.

"Yes, it's well documented that you're readily willing to ignore facts that disagree with your opinions."

And by facts, you mean your assertions ... as your lame ass butthurt stalking continues, and you drag that into yet another thread.

And yeah, I will dismiss out of hand any study that assert something which life experience tells me is nonsense.

Here's the problem with this study ... if men desire "girls", and women desire 50 year old men, then why isn't every 50 year old man walking around with an 18 year old on his arm?

It's certainly not a supply/demand issue.

"And by facts, you mean your assertions"

The only assertion I've made here is that you ignore inconvenient facts. It's a fairly factual assertion with plenty of evidence to back it up.

The validity of the study is certainly worth questioning, but your methodology of dissent ("it doesn't feel right, my various anecdotes contradict it. It must be wrong!!!") is absolutely pitiful and meaningless. It is trumpian in nature. It is the opposite of what one would do if they actually sought truth and knowledge.

"as your lame ass butthurt stalking continues"

It is stalking to point out a stupid comment in a thread I had already been watching? That's a weird definition of stalking: showing up before your target with absolutely know idea they were going to arrive.

"And yeah, I will dismiss out of hand any study that assert something which life experience tells me is nonsense."

See above about trumpian methods of truthiness. I will also add: data is not the plural of anecdote.

Because the study doesn’t say that and everyone doesn’t have to act the same way for there to be a clear bias on the group level. You shouldn’t place to much into the 18 and 50, it may be specific to the methods they used, other studies will find other age as the peaks. Since this is online dating and virtually free from the normal social preassures, the effects could be exaggerated. And these were fake experiment accounts, people never actually met so one can’t say much about how things would transpire in the long term. The meassure is ”no. of messages” so basically young (hot) girls and old (rich) guys were desirable as meassured by how many messages they got at the online meet market. Yes I know, it is a crisis of male identity...

"The validity of the study is certainly worth questioning, but your methodology of dissent ..."

My methodology of dissent? Do you have any idea where you are? The vast majority of posts in this forum consist of trolling, insults, unfounded accusations of heinous criminal conduct, links to yet another video proving that Kung Fu is the king of martial arts, video game rants, OWNED! OWNED OWNED!, random threads about whatever the hell the latest must see cable/netflix show someone is watching, Trump is a racist, Clinton hates America! ...

My dissent needs no methodology.

Ok not fake accounts, but the point stands, we do not know what actually happens later.

Yeah, all those threads are related to discussions of actual consequence, how? Are you unable to discern or move between serious and nonserious modes of interaction? Since this place is generally a shithole, you cannot do anything but be a shit and let go of all standards?

Fair enough, as long as you're honest about it. Nothing you say is ever of consequence.
