First video game licenced in Germany containing swastikas

BERLIN, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- The first video game containing symbols and swastika from the Third Reich was licenced in Germany, Elisabeth Secker, managing director of the official German Entertainment Software Self-Regulation Body (USK), announced on Wednesday.

According to the German regulatory body USK, the game "Through the Darkest of Times" from the Berlin-based developers Joerg Friedrich and Sebastian Schulz received its license despite containing characteristics of organizations that had been deemed unconstitutional according to paragraph 86a of the German Criminal Code (StGB).

The USK recently changed its procedure for the evaluation of games "in which the characteristics of unconstitutional organizations are used", allowing games in which symbols such as swastikas are depicted to be released if showing the symbols serves art, science or the depiction of history.

"The application of paragraph 86a of the StGB has been completely context-independent in the past," game developer Friedrich told Xinhua. "Now we can also deal critically with anti-constitutional issues in games without having to fear that our game will end up on the index," Friedrich added.

Applying the new procedure, "the depiction of these characteristics in context of the game fulfilled the criteria of social adequacy from the point of view of the independent USK test committee due to the clear opposition to the Nazi regime which the game conveys," the USK explained, "beyond that, no potential for impairment was seen for the age group from 12 years."

According to Friedrich, the game is still under development and a beta version will be first presented at gamescom 2018 starting on Aug. 21 in Cologne.
