President Donald Trump's closest aides have taken extraordinary measures in the White House to try to stop what they saw as his most dangerous impulses, going so far as to swipe and hide papers from his desk so he wouldn't sign them, according to a new book from legendary journalist Bob Woodward.

...

Chief of staff John Kelly describes Trump as an "idiot" and "unhinged," Woodward reports. Defense Secretary James Mattis describes Trump as having the understanding of "a fifth or sixth grader." And Trump's former personal lawyer John Dowd describes the President as "a fucking liar," telling Trump he would end up in an "orange jump suit" if he testified to special counsel Robert Mueller.

"He's an idiot. It's pointless to try to convince him of anything. He's gone off the rails. We're in crazytown," Kelly is quoted as saying at a staff meeting in his office. "I don't even know why any of us are here. This is the worst job I've ever had."

...

Throughout the book, Woodward portrays the President as a man obsessed with his standing in the media and with his core supporters. Trump appears to be lonely and increasingly paranoid, often watching hours of television in the White House residence. "They're out to get me," Trump said of Mueller's team.

At a National Security Council meeting on Jan. 19, Trump disregarded the significance of the massive U.S. military presence on the Korean Peninsula, including a special intelligence operation that allows the United States to detect a North Korean missile launch in seven seconds vs. 15 minutes from Alaska, according to Woodward. Trump questioned why the government was spending resources in the region at all.

“We’re doing this in order to prevent World War III,” Defense Secretary Jim Mattis told him.

After Trump left the meeting, Woodward recounts, “Mattis was particularly exasperated and alarmed, telling close associates that the president acted like — and had the understanding of — ‘a fifth- or sixth-grader.’ ”

At a dinner with Mattis and Gen. Joseph F. Dunford Jr., the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, among others, Trump lashed out at a vocal critic, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.). He falsely suggested that the former Navy pilot had been a coward for taking early release from a prisoner-of-war camp in Vietnam because of his father’s military rank and leaving others behind.

Mattis swiftly corrected his boss: “No, Mr. President, I think you’ve got it reversed.” The defense secretary explained that McCain, who died Aug. 25, had in fact turned down early release and was brutally tortured during his five years at the Hanoi Hilton.

“Oh, okay,” Trump replied, according to Woodward’s account.

After Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad launched a chemical attack on civilians in April 2017, Trump called Mattis and said he wanted to assassinate the dictator. “Let’s fucking kill him! Let’s go in. Let’s kill the fucking lot of them,” Trump said, according to Woodward.

Mattis told the president that he would get right on it. But after hanging up the phone, he told a senior aide: “We’re not going to do any of that. We’re going to be much more measured.”

two accounts of what's in the book about a meeting of Trump lawyers w/ Mueller:

from CNN (above)
"
in an even more remarkable move, Dowd and Trump's current personal attorney Jay Sekulow went to Mueller's office and re-enacted the mock interview. Their goal: to argue that Trump couldn't possibly testify because he was incapable of telling the truth.

"He just made something up. That's his nature," Dowd said to Mueller.
"

Washington Post has this about it:
"
Dowd then explained to Mueller and Quarles why he was trying to keep the president from testifying: “I’m not going to sit there and let him look like an idiot. And you publish that transcript, because everything leaks in Washington, and the guys overseas are going to say, ‘I told you he was an idiot. I told you he was a goddamn dumbbell. What are we dealing with this idiot for?’ ”

“John, I understand,” Mueller replied, according to Woodward.

i disagree... won't be surprising to people who have been paying attention, but it should definitely stir things up

even though Trump will claim it's all fake, there are things he will privately know are true & it will sow discord w/ those around him, plus many will have to either admit they said the things or be willing to turn liar to the public (which obviously is no problem for Trump-like people, but would be for Mattis presumably & many others)

although we may just get a lot of Rex Tillerson type responses where they won't admit nor deny (as he did w/ 'fucking moron')... which basically is admission... how hard is it to say, 'no, that's ridiculous, i never said that' if that was the case, given he was repeatedly pressed

White House chief of staff John Kelly once again denied that he ever called President Donald Trump an “idiot,” in a response to published excerpts from the book.

“The idea I ever called the President an idiot is not true,” Kelly said in a statement released by the White House earlier Tuesday.

Kelly was reported to have lost his temper often and said he thought Trump was “unhinged,” according to The Washington Post, which published excerpts of Woodward’s book. Woodward also said that Kelly said the president was “an idiot.”

“It’s pointless to try to convince him of anything,” Kelly said, according to the excerpt published in The Post. “He’s gone off the rails. We’re in Crazytown. I don’t even know why any of us are here. This is the worst job I’ve ever had.”

NBC News first reported in May that Kelly had referred to Trump as an idiot multiple times, making several remarks “insulting the president’s intelligence and casting himself as the savior of the country.”

In the White House statement released on Tuesday, Kelly re-upped an official comment he made in May, calling the accusations “total BS.”

“I spend more time with the President than anyone else, and we have an incredibly candid and strong relationship,” he said in the statement. “I’m committed to the President, his agenda, and our country. This is another pathetic attempt to smear people close to President Trump and distract from the administration’s many successes.”

Similarly, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis denied having questioned Trump’s intelligence, after an excerpt from the new book said the president had the understanding of “a fifth- or sixth-grader.”

“The contemptuous words about the president attributed to me in Woodward‘s book were never uttered by me or in my presence,” Mattis said in a statement on Tuesday evening. “While I generally enjoy reading fiction, this is a uniquely Washington brand of literature, and his anonymous sources do not lend credibility.“

His comments about Trump were reportedly made after a National Security Council meeting in January in which the president questioned the costs of keeping a U.S. military presence on the Korean Peninsula. Mattis told Trump that armed forces were necessary “in order to prevent World War III,” according to Woodward’s book.

“In serving in this administration, the idea that I would show contempt for the elected commander in chief, President Trump, or tolerate disrespect to the office of the president from within our Department of Defense, is a product of someone's rich imagination,” Mattis said in his statement.

.....

supposedly arguing that troops in korea will prevent ww3 doesn't even seem plausible..

if war starts in korea and usa troops are there then americans are likely to end up getting nuked by nk [including in american cities].. even if that don't happen then it's still easy to imagine china to get involved in fighting against the us since china did that the previous time.. maybe that could get really out of hand

but how is something like ww3 going to start if usa troops aren't in korea and america isn't involved.. are china and russia going to fight each other for some inexplicable reason.. or are europeans going to enter the fray and start fighting either china or russia.. i don't get what the argument for ww3 starting would be without usa troops there

wow...

"3000 people did not die in the two hurricanes that hit Puerto Rico. When I left the Island, AFTER the storm had hit, they had anywhere from 6 to 18 deaths. As time went by it did not go up by much. Then, a long time later, they started to report really large numbers, like 3000.

This was done by the Democrats in order to make me look as bad as possible when I was successfully raising Billions of Dollars to help rebuild Puerto Rico. If a person died for any reason, like old age, just add them onto the list. Bad politics. I love Puerto Rico!"

Trump has a point. Excess mortality of old people is common after a wide range of social disruptions and this is not the standard by which the stats of any other hurricane were compiled. Trump is correct on this issue.

if not for the hurricane would those 2,975 estimated deaths have still been expected?

(the answer is 'no', as that was the whole basis of the study that came up with the 2,975 number... your answer can't be 'yes' as the 2,975 would then have no meaning thus the 'yes' answer would have no meaning)

That people inside Trump Org tried to miss characterize the payments and Cohen misrepresented services done and timeline that is a crime. There is no evidence nor was there any expectation that President Trump would so micro manage that situation that he would have known those details. Again probably by design.

Cohen says the payment was paid to influence the election. President Trump says the payment was to keep the story away from his wife and family. Legally you gotta take Trump at his word on that one.
No crime by President Trump so far.

"Cohen says the payment was paid to influence the election."
... & said so under oath

"President Trump says the payment was to keep the story away from his wife and family."
... i don't recall him ever saying that, that's just what his defenders repeatedly suggested he say in order to avoid criminal liability

"Legally you gotta take Trump at his word on that one"
... you'd be a fucking idiot to take Trump's word on anything, especially when related to himself, it's almost an axiom that it would be false

also the long-term deal with the National Enquirer to grab stories to help his campaign is not something that would've been kept hidden from Trump... why would it

"Legally you gotta take Trump at his word on that one."

Not at all. Not even remotely. In fact, there is absolutely no legal precedent whatsoever. We should assume innocence until proven guilty, legally, but even legally we can suspect guilt and investigate guilt and not believe a statement of innocence.

Quite the opposite from your account, Trump hasn't said a word under oath. There's no logical or convincing reason to believe a word he's said, not when one of the many defenses of the man is that he's a bullshitter. Even statements under oath must be convincing to believe him.

We may not be able to charge and/or punish him without convincing evidence, but we don't have to believe a word he says.

on climate change:

"My uncle was a great professor at MIT for many years. Dr. John Trump. And I didn’t talk to him about this particular subject, but I have a natural instinct for science, and I will say that you have scientists on both sides of the picture."

he sure is good at packing a lot of stupid into a comment

If the media was "on my side, I think I'd be at 100% right now. You know? 100%. I really believe it. They'd have breaking news: President Trump, his approval rating, has just hit one hundred percent."

Trump claimed there's a middle class tax cut coming by the start of November

blatant midterm pander (& unlikely to be true... given that Trump said it, & normal R's only want to cut taxes on the rich & businesses)

I thought the first tax cut was supposed to be for the middle class?

I will expect the same outcome as the first one - nothing of note for 95% of citizens, but damn it'll feel good to be even more filthy rich.

The first was to be made permanent.

That he will do now and add an additional cut for the middle class.

When they make a cut it is done by percentages.

You can cut middle class by, lets say 10%, and they get a break of a few thousand dollars.

Cut a multi-millionaire's rate by 1% and he saves $3 Million.

But the millionaire is still paying $40 Million in taxes.

The number are made up and have no connection to reality.

But even you should see what I mean

Or would you rather cut the millionaire's rate down to 15% so the rich and the middle class are both at 25 % so they will be charged the same rate?

There is no time to be wasted on you due to the many years of the topic of anything economic related. You still fail to grasp how it works. Hell you can't even acknowledged that this was nothing as a ploy to sucker those who are still undecided because /now/ they will work on a tax plan to help middle class. Where before the "tax plan" was going to do that before. Which has yielded no results. And it won't be much of an impact until next year anyways.

Don't get upset because you are told to not bother speaking about a topic that you do not understand. You do anyways, but you will be called out on it as well. Let's not forgo the thought that just about 99% any topic that is discussed you have shown complete ignorance and utter stupidity. This has been chronologically recorded mind you by your very existence.

i am aware Fox News & R's sold the fact that the rich got almost all the benefit by noting the % vs actual #'s argument

you bought it then & will continue to buy it forever
