Utopia Talk / Politics / So I'm sitting at my desk

taking my afternoon nap and something starts making a buzzing noise on my desk. I think my PC must be going nuts so I turn it off. Then the buzzing starts again and I realize that I must have left my cell phone on when I got home from the store.
I open it up and it's a Presidential Alert. What in the fuck do I need to be alerted about from this orange faced jackass?
As it is I have to force myself to not shoot the TV when this pompous jackass is on and spewing his bull shit.
Now the prick is using cell phones to piss me off???
So any bets on how long it is before he declares Marshall Law via cell phones?

wait for the 3am "WITCH HUNT!" text while he's on the toilet

but it's meant to be for emergencies, presumably no one will tell Trump how to use it himself... unlike what would be needed w/ any other president ever

It is not something the president can use on a whim. He isn't the one that activates the system. THe law pertaining to this says "Except to the extent necessary for testing the public alert and warning system, the public alert and warning system shall not be used to transmit a message that does not relate to a natural disaster, act of terrorism, or other man-made disaster or threat to public safety."

If there is reason to send an alert there is specific ways the message must be written. Chances are it would be written by a member of the white house staff and then approved by the president. Once approved it would be sent to FEMA then the president would need to contact FEMA to authorize the alert actually being sent. So unlike twitter there would be filters in place.

kargen nailed it.

This is something that has been in the works for a long time.

It is designed to save your life.

And no, No President will be able to use it for anything other than a major emergency.

You nailed it about as hard as Trump nailed Stormy.

Which is to say weakly, foolishly, and felt so insecure about it that you offered to pay her for her trouble.

Goddamn, that OP contained more misplaced curmudgeonly rage than even Retard Rod can usually muster. Didn't you watch the first ep of AHS Apocalypse? That's what it's for.

It was entirely unnecessary description, considering "FEMA test alert" is literally all that is needed.

So The President can use it to raise campaign funds?

That is what Obama would have done with it.

Obama would not have been able to.

Have you ever heard of checks and balances before Hot Rod?

You seem to think the POTUS is all powerful.

Have you ever heard of almost every member of Obama's cabinet signing off on selling a substantial amount of our uranium to Russia?

Not an ounce of uranium ever left the United States due to that deal.

So, this 'Presidential' alert thing. Does this mean that all alerts must be vetted by the POTUS?

I realize that the Twitterman thinks, as do his followers, that he is all knowing and all expert on everything. So does it follow that since he has labeled this as "Presidential" all alerts must pass his muster?

I think that will be the SOP.

The President will be the one person that is best for making the decision to use it. He/She will be briefed on every available detail.

I can't imagine a full national alert. Most of them will be local ones such as for storms or flooding. That sort of thing.

So if the Neshaminy Creek is flooding in Bucks county, they will notify the POTUS and he will do an analysis of the situation and then issue a Presidential alert to warn the residents along the creek to move to higher ground.

Will that be before or after the Twitterman finishes his round of golf?

I'm not sure about you creek, but Trump might have used it in North Carolina if the system had been read.

So you are saying that the President is now the one to announce a hurricane like Florence. When everyone in North America and probably the world had watched it develop off the coast of Africa and slowly move across the Atlantic?

Well isn't he special.

No the hurricane a flood or anything like that would be normal alerts issued in the affected areas. The only example they have provided of when such an alert might have been used if available in our recent past was 9/11.

FEMA is more associated with local events and that is why this alert does not include the name FEMA even though FEMA is the issuing agency.

As an aside the act creating this was voted on in 2015. Prior to 2015 President Obama and congress set aside funding for wireless phone carriers to improve infrastructure so 9-1-1 and this system would work better in rural areas. Instead of improving infrastructure the phone companies bought up smaller companies to increase their customer base. The test message did not reach near all those it should have if the phone companies had done as they said they would with the government funds. So chances are we the people are going to be giving them even more money.
