He’s not human. Instead, this is the latest technological achievement touted by China: a digital news anchor, powered by artificial intelligence. Developed based on the faces, voices, lip movements and expressions of human anchors, its inventors say the AI anchors will be able to deliver news 24 hours a day, seven days a week – as long as they’re given a script. The AI anchors, developed by state news agency Xinhua and Beijing-based search engine operator Sogou, were launched during the World Internet Conference in Wuzhen on Wednesday. Xinhua said that the move was not just a “breakthrough” in AI technology, but also the first example of the use of AI anchors in journalism. China has been boosting its use of artificial intelligence, using the technology in a huge range of applications – from autonomous driving to military submarines and facial recognition. China vows to become a global leader of artificial intelligence by 2030. It has already made good progress: the homegrown AI industry has grown 67% over the past year. Xinhua said that the AI anchors could be used to decrease production costs and improve the quality and speed of breaking news. Two AI anchors, one Chinese- and another English-speaking, were showcased. These anchors are now available throughout Xinhua’s internet and mobile platforms, such as its Chinese and English apps, WeChat account and online TV site. Mister Roboto On the Chinese internet, opinion is split on the virtual anchors, with reactions ranging from admiration to alarm. “The AI technology in China will get better and better,” said one user on Weibo, China’s version of Twitter. Another Weibo user said: “Looks like news anchors will lose their jobs, too.” But others found the AI anchors scary. “It was really creepy when I was staring at his eyes,” said one. Some said AI anchors are still very different from the real ones: “The voice is too stiff, and there are problems with the pauses as well,” said one commenter. At least for now, news anchors in China will be able to hang on to their jobs.
