QUERY:

Are all of these books tied to the HBO Series or just the one?

1. A Dance with Dragons

2. A Feast for Crows

3. A Storm of Swords

4. A Clash of Kings

5. A Game of Thrones

If not, Are the books tied together but just not a part of the TV series?

Also, are there more books in the series of books if it is a series.

The reason I ask is that I bought the above five books and I want to make sure that I have everything involved with the story.

Well, there are two more planned books in that series (A Song of Ice and Fire). And there is no way to know if that fuckhead will ever finish the series. Of course he's working on it, but there is a very real chance he'll croak before he finishes.

So if you're fine with reading an incomplete series, go for it. You've got all that has so far been published. But if that's an issue for you, well, you could easily be screwed.

And the show has moved on past the published books.

I'm almost finished with a Mickey Spillane book, 'There's Something Down There'.

It is different from his usual fare. It takes place near The Bermuda Triangle and is over twice as long as a Hammer novel.

After that, I am going to reread LOTR, starting with The Silmarillion and The Hobbit so I'm not certain that I will live long enough to get to A Game of Thrones or not.

I got my fingers crossed though.

you may want to move The Silmarillion to the end of that series, I got the impression it's only for dedicated super-fans (haven't read it myself)

...like Star Trek fans who can speak Klingon

That's going a bit far, but yeah, it's definitely not for everyone. Reading it after the others is good call, though.

Read game of thrones first, if you like it then continue the other 4 books. they are all pretty good, even the weakest one (a feast of crows), is one of the best modern fantasy books around.

if you finish those there are other books that occur in the same universe but are written before the story that takes place in the story. Dunk and Egg are good and quick to read novelas. They are like the Hobbit to Lord of the Rings. Far more simple and straight forward stories set in the same universe.

The Silmarillion is the pinnacle of English and English-language literature, as far as single volumes go.

Tolkien's legendarium taken as a whole obviously supercedes it, but then again it is also the greatest literary achievement of mankind.

I read somewhere that it was the prologue to the series and its proper position is first.

I read the whole thing decades ago, I just want to revisit the series for the fun of it though.

I thought about rereading C.S. Forester's Horatio Hornblower or Harry Potter, but I have read both and have watched the movies so many times I thought LOTR would be better because I read it before the others.

If I live long enough I might go back and read Hornblower again. It is without question the most exciting and interesting Books I have ever read.

Yes, The Silmarillion is set before The Hobbit and LoTR (the majority of it long, long before the events in those books).

However, it's not like The Hobbit or LoTR, and you're not going to get any real added benefit by reading it first. Honestly, I would argue that most people would get more out of The Silmarillion by reading it after the other two.

Really the only thing I remember about it is they camped out at one point in the middle of an open area where there was no cover. At least I think that was from Silmarillion. Heck, that was over 50 years ago.
