Death toll was less about Old People and more about people not realizing how little time they had to evacuate. One of the short comings of living in California, quakes and wildfires tend to happen pretty fast when compared to Hurricanes.

it was almost entirely old people.

Even wind driven fires are not that fast, losing to cars by a lot. Plus the smoke precedes them. They dont exactly sneak up on you.

there seems to be several stories of people barely escaping in melting cars, so presumably there are people who did not barely escape

Combustion engines do not work that great in low O2 environments. Lots of stall stories.

They were given less than an hour warning. I suspect a fair amount of people thought they could run home and grab something of value
