I thought only africans and arabs rioted and set cars and buildings on fire. What the hell is going on?

Several people has been killed and many wounded. But the white old men who are part of the protests says they are peaceful:

"We're a peaceful movement, but we're disorganised -- it's a mess because we don't have a leader," said Dan Lodi, a 68-year-old pensioner on the Champs-Elysees.

http://afp...-anti-macron-protests/a/Kvg5kE

Violent clashes engulf Paris in new anti-Macron protests

Anti-government protesters torched dozens of cars and set fire to storefronts during daylong clashes with riot police across central Paris on Saturday, as thousands took part in fresh "yellow vest" protests against high fuel taxes.

Officers responded with tear gas after being targeted by protesters hurling rocks and other projectiles on the third weekend of demonstrations which have morphed into a broader rebuke of French President Emmanuel Macron.

Smoke engulfed several shopping districts as the violence spread from the Arc de Triomphe, where crowds had gathered earlier hoping to march down the Champs-Elysees.

While several dozens were allowed into the avenue after an ID check and search, many others -- some wearing gas masks or ski goggles -- remained behind and fought police manning barricades and water cannons.

Protesters then led police on cat-and-mouse chases through other parts of the capital, setting cars and construction equipment alight and smashing windows.

An assault rifle was stolen from a police vehicle, a source told AFP, though it was unclear if it was loaded.

One person was in a critical condition after protesters pulled down one of the huge iron gates of the Tuileries garden facing the famed Louvre museum, crushing several people.

^ lol, these people are not the smartest people.

"Those responsible for this violence don't want change or improvement, they want chaos," President Emmanuel Macron said in Buenos Aires where he was attending the G20 summit.

Macron added that he had convened a meeting with Prime Minister Edouard Philippe, Interior Minister Christophe Castaner and other top officials in Paris on Sunday after his return from Argentina.

"No cause justifies that authorities are attacked, that businesses are plundered, that passers-by or journalists are threatened or that the Arc de Triomphe is defiled," he said.

Philippe said the violence was "incredibly shocking" during a visit evening to a police barracks on Saturday evening.

Authorities said at least 287 people were arrested in Paris and 110 injured, including 17 of the 5,000 police officers mobilised for the protests. Nearly 190 fires were put out and six buildings were set alight, the interior ministry said.

[...]

Along the opulent Avenue Foch near the Arc de Triomphe, home to embassies and luxury residences, protesters ripped out benches to form a blockade, one person waving a skull-and-bones pirate flag.

Interior Minister Castaner attributed the violence to "specialists in sowing conflict, specialists in destruction".

He did not rule out imposing a state of emergency -- a demand made by the police union Alliance -- declaring: "Nothing is taboo for me. I am prepared to examine everything."

- -

Yeah, I think they need to declare a state of emergency and start to shoot all the violent protesters. Let’s be honest, these hooligans are probably being paid by Trump’s people: Steve Bannon and their movement. The French police and the army needs to kill them all.

It is time to stop treating the Steve Bannons with silk golves. Take off the silk gloves and crush their heads. Kill all of them. It will eventually come down to this anyways, so.

I mean, it is likely not a coincidence that a short time after Bannon’s visit to Paris where he met and conspired with his fascists in the Movement, that all of this is happening. These protests are staged. They have two groups of people. One group of honest-looking pensioners, who to the regular Parisian looks to be legit, who starts the protests and attracts more people outside of the movement to join the protests. Then they have the group of hooligans and thugs whose mission is to create chaos and destroy the liberal democracy.

So now that they have started it we should defend ourselves by killing them off.

”Looks like a diverse gang of misfits”

Of course. Once there are riots on the streets, you will have the poor and clueless immigrant youths from the suburbs taking part in the riots as well, as well as anarchists from the left. All that Bannon and the fascists needs to do is to stage the ground and lit the first match. Then they can watch it all play out.

Out of morbid curiosity, I googled to see what specifically makes "far"-right (aka moderate right) politicians like Le Pen fascist. Be warned, my fellow UPers; the following disturbing list may shock you.

Marine Le Pen is a fascist who hates democracy because:

-Her political platform includes proposed constitutional amendments, and wanting to change the constitution is in and of itself fascist. Somebody better inform the anti-2A people of this.

-She wants to make it easier to change laws via popular referendums. How anti-democratic.

-She wants French people to be proud of their country and culture. As an American, I have no idea what there is to be proud of (they're very good at surrendering maybe?), but to each their own.

-She wants to leave the EU. WTF HOW DARE SHE NOT BE A FAN OF SUBJECTING HER COUNTRY TO EUROPE'S CORPORATE ELITIST MONSTROSITY?!?!?! RIGHT SIDE OF HISTORY REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

-For some indeterminable reason, she has a problem with leftist media outlets that constantly portray her as an enemy of progress and civilization.

----

Yeah, now that I've educated myself I can see how this woman is a much bigger threat to democracy than the Muslim refugees who are literally opposed to Western civilization.

I want a representative democracy like we have. People get to vote for a political party. Our Riksdag is then deciding the laws.

If we would have direct democracy where people would get to decide the laws via popular referendums, it would be a receipe for disaster. An entire population is not knowledgable or educated in all and every issue/subject. They don’t have the neccessary knowledge to analyze and make a good decision.

If our laws would be decided by popular referendums, it means if there was enough Hot Rods then pedophilia would be legal. But yeah, maybe that is what Le Pen, Hot Rod, Obaminated and Rugian wants.

Mkay. Lets start with constitutional amedments by way of referenda. Do you think the the 2nd amendment will make the cut? Or a new amendment mandating the phasing out of fossil fuels. Would that make the cut?

I think the term is "useful idiots". But of course, the premise is that a country give up balances and checks and introduce rule by popular decree in their places.

As you correctly point out, most countries have checks to make sure that cannot occur - or occur only in limited scope, or as non-binding advisory votes.

Which is fair enough.

Also, do you think it’s practical to have a popular referendum everytime a law is made or changed? Wtf is this? You are joking, right?

So the only reason you are not out fucking children is because it is illegal? Where are all these people who would suddenly vote to legalize pedophilia, rename left to right and right to left, which btw very different in degree of complexity of problem for the ordinary "moron" to solve than say running Burger King. Like Rugian said, the US can't have such a referendum.

But I do believe that the only real democracy is direct democracy.

You want everyone to vote, but not the old or the stupid. And only elected representatives (representing like what, a total of 0.00001% of the population, should vote on important topics (and only in favor of trending Twitter opinion I imagine).

You fellate putin daily, clearly you appreciate authoritarian governments led by strongmen and ignoring the will of the people. Why not just admit it and give up the pretense of respecting democracy. Just say it, you have an absolute disregard for the premise and the implementations of democracy and are imprinting authoritarianism onto a democratic model.

And you are a communist with a sadistic affinity for federalist Russia.

jergul,

Actually, my point was that the federal structure of the United States makes it structurally impossible to hold such a referendum. France does not have this problem due to its unitary structure.

For the record, I'm not a fan of unitary republics. France could absolutely benefit from a measure of federalization and decentralization.

Also for the record, many individual states due indeed allow for referendums and ballot questions. Certainly these measures are subject to a degree of control, but the fundamental belief is that the same people who have been declared competent enough to vote in their chosen lawmakers and magistrates are also competent enough to vote in their chosen policies.

I mean, how can you logically believe otherwise. It would make zero sense.

Yes, you Constitution has checks and balances that disallow those kind of referenda. Just like other countries have constitutions that disallow such things.

Your Constitution has the form it does to avoid a tyranny of the majority. It is there by design.

It is not a question of competency beyond the part where legislation is often highly technical.

To me it is more a question of how direct democracy can be abused. I alluded to that by showcasing the 2nd ammedment might quickly fall if your Constitution had granted referenda regulatory powers.

But sure. If we ever get a 2/3ds majority to change our constitution to allow for regulatory (as opposed to advisory) referenda, then I will accept that.

Or thank god for checks and balances to use other words.

My position is generally pretty consistent. Crimea has held a referendum on reuniting with Russia for example. That does not change my view on the illegality of the Russian occupation (which due to the claim of annexation is in principle is a far worse violation of international law than Iraq, Afghanistan, or Libya ever were).

Macron Blinks: France Suspends Fuel Tax Hike After "Yellow Vest" Riots

Wed Dec 05 13:41:01
One of the reasons the French government raised the fuel prices is to be in line with the Paris accords, to combat "old" polluting technology by taxing it, so as to stimulate people to switch over to buy less polluting technology that is taxed less. And to generate funds to comply with the Paris accords to finance climate change related projects. Ofcourse to help the developed world and to save the planet, but that corporations and consultancies profit from it, won't hurt either. Or the politicians who get kickbacks paid out to their favorite charities and foundations...

Well, anyway, it seems most of the common people aren't that interested to fund the Paris accords...

People need to change their personal decisions regarding carbon use. A revenue-neutral carbon tax that is used to fund even a tax rebate that goes 100% back to consumers would be a powerful tool to fight it.

But watching what happened, looks like what Paramount says was right. Some peaceful protesters were combined with a small number of violent protesters which then brought out a large amount of disaffected people that would've protested over nothing.

Most people are just failures and look to latch onto any narrative. The power of the far-right is that they have a shit-ton of money to spend on creating one that serves the needs of the kleptocrats and then exploding the meaning of any event to fit that narrative. They even work together across boundaries to feed off seemingly unrelated nationalist movements in other countries.

And the baby boomer retards who have ruined our economy and are ruining our world eat it up hook, line and sinker.

Turkish president says watching protests with great ‘concern’

Europeans often criticize Erdogan for intolerance of dissent

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan used the violent clashes between protesters and police in Paris to respond in kind to long-standing European criticism of his handling of political opposition at home.

“We will never approve of violent expression of demands for rights, but all opinions and demands can be made clear in democracies,” Erdogan said on Saturday. “Those who mocked our police force, accusing it of brutality, should now look at their own police force. Europe has failed the class on democracy, freedoms and human rights.”

The Turkish president was addressing supporters in Istanbul, the cultural heartland rocked five years ago by months of unrest that was met with a heavy-handed police response. At the time and since then, Erdogan has often been attacked by European leaders for being too harsh on dissent. Criticism of Erdogan strengthened after a failed coup in 2016 led to a huge number of arrests and the detention of many journalists, academics and opposition politicians for extended periods.

The French protests by the “Yellow Vests” in Paris have given the Turkish president a rare chance to take the high moral ground. “I watch what’s happening in European capitals with concern,” he said.

Erdogan’s message has a resonance among die-hard fans. A Haber, a staunchly pro-government news channel, has been broadcasting the Paris protests all day, portraying the events as a mixture of popular resentment toward social policies in France and as the outcome of a foreign conspiracy aimed at undermining France, much like the anti-government protests that began in Istanbul in the middle of 2013 and spread to the rest of the country.
