Utopia Talk / Politics / Democrats to smart

Sen. Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii, on Tuesday told a conference that she heard one of the reasons that her party has a difficult time connecting with voters is because Democrats know so much, and have a tendency of appealing to voters' minds instead of their hearts.

Hirono made the comment at a conference in Washington, D.C. She was asked by the moderator about ways Democrats could drive voter turnout.

"I wish I had the answer to that because one of the things that we, Democrats, have a really hard time is connecting to people’s hearts instead of [their heads]," Hirono said. "We’re really good at shoving out all the information that touch people here [pointing to her head] but not here [pointing to her heart]."

Hirono, 71, said Democrats need to stop speaking in a way that comes off as manipulative or strokes fear and resentment. But we have a really hard time doing that and one of the reasons-- it was told to me at one of our retreats-- was that we Democrats know so much, that is true. And we have kind of have to tell everyone how smart we are and so we have a tendency to be very left brain," she continued. The left-hand side of the brain is often associated with analytical thought.

Wasn't this the same broad who said during the Kavanaugh hearings that "men need to shut up and stand up?" That was a great left brain analysis I admit.

She is absolutely right in comparison to Trump.

Trump never makes arguments rooted in fact & he's practically proud of it ('my gut tells me more than people's brains')

Plus there's the general resistance of R's about science if it harms $ making.

Too smart for kargen, it seems.

She isn't even remotely right. Democrats need to play more to feelings? Really? That is the only thing they have in their entire playbook and it goes back farther than when Pat Schroeder would start crying at the drop of a hat and say what about the children. That was her rally cry then and is still the go to play now. Sometimes they change it up a bit and ask what about minorities but it is the same message. Vote for us because we care about you.

Hirono speaks English like a fob so her soundbites often spund very bad. That being said, she’s not wrong. Democrats think being right is enough. When Republicans mostly lie and fearmonger and win, that means Demsneed to change strategy.

That being said, the fact that Trump could win is the largest puece of evidence that liberal democracy has failed and we’d be better off with enlightened despotism like China has. People like Rugian need to stay failures. No need to give them a vote for them to metastasize their failures to the rest of the world.

Research confirms what I’ve always known: White liberals talk down to me | Solomon Jones

Updated: December 4, 2018 - 5:57 PM

http://www...on-solomon-jones-20181204.html

Now that an Ivy-League study has quantified the patronizing racial attitudes of white liberals, I can rest comfortably, knowing that I’m not alone in my belief that well-intentioned whites sometimes speak down to black people.

In a study called Self Presentation in Interracial Settings: The Competence Downshift By White Liberals, two professors from Princeton and Yale found that white liberals “patronize minorities stereotyped as lower status and less competent.” The study found that white conservatives don’t tend to do that.

The dichotomy brings to mind the adage I’ve often heard from older blacks. It goes something like this: I’d rather deal with white folks from down South. At least with them you know where you stand.

In other words, white liberals are sometimes just as racist as white conservatives. They just hide it better, and, for black folks, that’s harder to navigate.

And therein lies the issue. In a quest to relate to black folks, some white liberals speak in ways that are not natural for them. And they do so because their biases tell them that blacks are incapable of understanding anything beyond rudimentary language. This results in unnatural and phony exchanges that feel forced and inauthentic.

White conservatives sure love their white victimhood narrative. Much more so than white liberals talk down to people which you can barely find examples of but for white victimhood literally every article on fox news or breitnart will reinforce it.

Incorrect, but far left intellectuals did corner the market on liberal arts and made being a competitive and ambitious Male a bad thing.

Trump Speaks At Fourth-Grade Level, Lowest Of Last 15 U.S. Presidents, New Analysis Finds
(Newsweek article, Jan 2018)

http://www...fury-smart-genius-obama-774169

i recall him scoring similarly in the primaries when everyone was ranked based on their speech, him at the bottom again... of course

obviously it's possible someone can be more knowledgeable than they come off, but no evidence of that in Trump's case... i have no idea what he has actual factual knowledge about, but it's nothing he ever talks about

You're not in some way delusional and think what you post is somehow veiled and clever?

Anyway back to the original topic. Can anyone without snickering or giggling actually try and claim the Democrats haven't been all about stirring emotions as the way to achieve what they want?

"Think of an economy where people could be an artist or a photographer or a writer without worrying about keeping their day job in order to have health insurance."

"I have deep emotions about the American people. If I were to cry for anything, I would cry for them and the policies that they're about to face."

"Healthcare as a human right, it means that every child, no matter where you are born, should have access to a college or trade-school education if they so choose it, and I think no person should be homeless if we can have public structures and public policy to allow for people to have homes and food and lead a dignified life in the United States."

Healthcare is not a human right in the USA.
We have the right to college or trade school, if we are willing to make sure a lending institution gets their cut of the cost.
We have the ability to make safe housing available to everyone. We do not have the desire. Not so long ago, in many cities, we built housing projects that turned out to be nightmares for many of them.

The simple fact is that we have become a very selfish society. Those who have risen to comfortable incomes with somewhat secure benefits, would much rather not look backward at those that were left behind. They don't want to associate with them for fear that they will be drug back to their former lives.

Man republicans are the king of projection.

"My argument being the Democrats have been running on the emotions are what matters train for many a decade. "

Nixon - "Democrats are lawless. I'll keep us safe and let us leave Vietnam with honor."

Then proceeds to break law and betray South Vietnam.

Reagan - "Feel good. I give good speeches."

Meanwhile explodes the debt from nothing to 40% and allows the corporate takeover of America. Unions start collapsing and corporate raiders start becoming dominant. This is when wages of the middle class started falling way behind.

George H. Bush - "Willie Horton. Vote for me because he's for black rape."

George W. Bush - First Term - "McCain had a black baby. Vote for me.

Second Term - "Swift Vote Vets for Lies. Also Gays shouldn't marriage and should be banned from ever doing so. And I kept us safe ... kind of."

Donald Trump - "MAGA. I'll keep black people down and brown people out."

***********

The last time Republicans ran on sensible policies they actually enacted was Eisenhower; maybe Nixon. George H. Bush was a sensible president who lost because he broke the far-right promises he made in order to win.

Ever since then; it's been constant, neverending fearmongering.

"The simple fact is that we have become a very selfish society. Those who have risen to comfortable incomes with somewhat secure benefits, would much rather not look backward at those that were left behind."

That may or may not be true but isn't relevant to the conversation.

Dukhat I never claimed playing on emotions is exclusive to Democrats. Hirono's statement that Democrats need to quit trying to persuade with facts and instead appeal to the heart is laughable. She is all about stirring up the emotions on every issue. She is somehow compelled to work into every conversation "I am from a broken home so I know..." no matter what the issue is.

Funny thing is Republican strategists have been telling candidates for a while now the same thing, you need to relate to the people and play to their emotions. Instead of telling people how much money a tax refund might give them tell them the tax refund will allow some single mother out there to be able to buy shoes for her kids.

When it comes to playing on emotions the Democrats are leaps and bounds better at it and use it more often than Republicans. They have been for quite a while now.

They are also much much better at using social media but that is a whole different issue.

kargen, fortunately you see more and more Americans who do not identify as democrat or republican anymore. Sick of the partisanship and hypocrisy, of placing (corporate) party interests above the interests of the american people. Time is getting ripe for a new fresh party/movement. Still money/funding keeps being a big issue...

I registered as a Democrat when I turned 18 because both my parents are Democrats. Two years later I switched to unaffiliated. I considered registering as a libertarian in the 1990s but decided to stay unaffiliated. Good move on my part I think because the Libertarian party wrecked itself just as they were starting to make some progress.

I get tired of hearing people (especially politicians) claim a vote for a third party candidate is a wasted vote. Even worse when they claim a third party candidate is taking votes away from a Democrat or Republican.
