What do you guys think it will be about?

I think its going to be cloak and dagger and Picard is going to be some sort of diplomat or something but actually a secret time travelling operative for Section 31 with his own ship like the USS Defiant and Data will be his batman.

I hope it's a spinoff of The Inner Light. Perhaps a sitcom about Kamin's attempts to adapt to his new town/family.

Maybe Picard will have a time travelling cameo in Star Trek Discovery.

I like these new Star Trek movies and shows. They are more like Star Wars.

Wow this article will piss off rednecks. I think maybe the new Picard show will be about Section 31 and also the Mirror universe where Spock has a beard and Worf is THE boss of the Klingons.

By directing the Picard pilot, Culpeper is the first woman to helm the launch of a new Star Trek series in the franchise’s 53-year history. She made her Star Trek debut directing the episode “Vaulting Ambition” in Star Trek: Discovery’s first season. She also directed the upcoming 10th episode of Discovery’s second season.

“Hanelle is a gifted and dynamic filmmaker whose directorial choices are always deeply rooted in character,” Alex Kurtzman, Discovery’s co-creator, executive producer and showrunner said. “I’ve been a fan of her work since she started with us on Discovery, and she’s the perfect person to re-introduce the beloved character of Picard to longtime fans and new viewers alike. We’re thrilled she’s joining our Trek family on this next adventure.”

Culpeper is working with producers and a writers’ room that share her love of Picard. Kurtzman told ComicBook.com at the TCA 2019 Winter Press Tour about that and about how the new show differs from Star Trek: The Next Generation.

“Everybody in that room loves Jean-Luc Picard very deeply, and obviously, the benefit that we have is that Jean-Luc Picard is in the room with us,” Kurtzman said. “And so, as we're breaking story, we're asking ourselves, ‘How do we live to the spirit, and to the character, and for the tone that Next Gen set, but also make it something very, very different in other ways?’ And Patrick was really clear with us from the beginning. He did not want to repeat what he had already done. And by the way, it's been 20 plus years, so he couldn't possibly be that same person anymore.

“And so, the question becomes, ‘What has happened to him in that period of time? Have there been occurrences that forced him to reckon with choices that he's made in his life? How do you hold on to being the person everybody loved when the circumstances around you may have changed so radically?’ And those are the big questions that we're asking.”

According to Stewart, the show will have a different storytelling style than The Next Generation.

“We’re hoping for more than one season,” Stewart said. “And with this first series, and this is one of the things that’s so interesting about the writers’ room, they are writing a 10-hour movie. In The Next Generation, it was a story, a different story, a different story, all with the same characters as many series are. But this time it is one story, from beginning to end. I hope that will lead people to...binge-watching, that it might lead to something like that because the idea of it being an unfolding narrative is really terrific.”

Are you excited to see the new Picard series? Let us know in the comments.

The Picard series begins filming in California in April and will premiere in late 2019 on CBS All Access.

I am not looking forward to the new Picard ST. Patrick Stewart is old now, the man looks frail. How are they going to make it work? I'll likely watch anyway, but I am not optomistic. I was high on the new Discovery ST for a while, but second season seems boring. That fucking 'missing spock' storyline is going nowhere

Title of the show has been revealed.

Star Trek: Picard.

Kind of an uninspired title but I'm looking forward to it.

I ddidn't see any indications, but I wasn't paying attention. Picard has this stafford bull terrier- type dog, named Number One, naturally. That was a good first episode, no question about it. Fast paced, with good fights, a story line that I understood for a change, and a nice closing shot

I dont want to shit on CR's happiness over Picard returning, so I'll refrain from being too negative about the show.

But I will say that TNG being an action series has never worked out in the past.

You can say whatever you feel about any show, that wouldn't ruin my happiness one bit. I don't expect people to have same tv taste. But I appreciate the sentiment.

Valid point on TNG and action. Times are certainly different, this is not network TV anymore, they even swear(!) now. But I don't expect Picard show to become some sort of action packed Bourn style program

I think Patrick Stewart's contract is only for 3 seasons and they will phase the show into being about new characters if it continues to be successful.

*sigh* I hate getting older. All my childhood heroes are getting older too or get exposed as vicious rapists.

Habebe, it only got worse after the pilotm

I dont know why it's so hard for Hollywood to do actual Star Trek now. I mean, if the ST label wasn't used, would you think these two series have ANYTHING to do with each other?

http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Uii5WrmChbE

Vs.

http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=08TDDocWwSI

And to add insult to injury, they had to drag Patrick Stewart into it. Only to have the series shit on his character all season. What a waste.

No, not very star treky.

I mean I watched it around when it came out, and havn't since so it didnt grab me.

I definitely recommend penny dreadfull LA.

I will probably check out the original.

Although, best tv series I've seen in the last 6 months?

The dark crystal age of resistance. Now I am a nostalgia buff, so the puppets may have put it over thw edge for me but its really an all star cast ( plenty of game of thrones actors) but really the stoey line, acting and masteefull puppetry is fantastic.

habebe:

I liked penny dreadful, didn't know there was a sequel.

Rugian:

I thought it was very star trek, lots of thematic stuff on liberal humanism etc.

You realise that Patrick Stewart is right into what you call SJW right?

But I didn't really buy that this character is Picard. I get he's supposed to have been broken by the refusal to rescue the Romulans etc. and suffering from onset of mental illness but still felt he was a bit feeble in some places. The interview piece where he snaps back "no, lives!" I thought very Picard but there were other bits where he wasn't so much "mellowed with old age" but just a completed different, weaker character.

And the french space pimp episode... ergh...

Overall, Discovery season I seems the best of the new trek stuff recently.

Discovery season II turned into a goddamned mess at the end that made no sense. Ok, she has a time travel suite, and she becomes the predestination paradox that leads them to where they are... fine... but how come this suite allows her to, e.g. destroy/disable the "predator" species (Baal?) technology planetwide?. Aside from being able to time travel, it's not uber tech, it's 15 year old contemporary federation tech, and it was established that then Baal were able to hold off at least an entire starship of top of the range federation tech.

I could go on. Liked the characters and the general vibe, but the plotting of that second season of Discovery sucked donkey balls. Looking forward to the Pike spinoff.

Seb, So far only 5 episodes. This one stars Nathalie Former as like a Spanish Satan sort of, she plays like 5 roles. It takes place in 1938 Los Angeles and in all of her roles she eggs people on to do evil. It's probably better than how my rendition of it sounds.

Where is Nimatzo claiming Enterprise is the best ST series? I bet he is probably at work, watching The Phantom Menace on his iPhone instead of doing his job.

CR:

I think this season will be better. Clear drop in the quality of the writing mid way through. They couldn't decide if they were plot driven or character driven.

They were better when they didn't give a shit about the canon.
