Canadian air traffic controllers send pizza to U.S. counterparts amid partial government shutdown

Montreal -- Canadian air traffic controllers have bought hundreds of pizzas for their American counterparts over the past few days in what has become an industry-wide show of support during the U.S. government's partial shutdown. Peter Duffey, the head of the Canadian Air Traffic Control Association, said Sunday the initiative began Thursday when employees at Edmonton's control center took up a collection to buy pies for controllers in Anchorage, Alaska.

Other facilities across Canada decided to join in, and the idea snowballed.

"The next thing we knew, our members were buying pizzas left, right and center for the colleagues in the U.S," Duffey said. "As it stands right now, I believe we're up to 36 facilities that have received pizza from Canada, and that number is growing by the hour."

Some 10,000 air traffic controllers in the United States have been working without pay since late December due to the ongoing government shutdown.

What kind of a system is this where political bickering shuts down the maintenance of basic services? We haven’t had a >government< in Sweden for 3 months and I’m wondering if we are not better off. Everything works fine.

Most basic services continue, just there paychecks are delayed.

Eh, ok. Just? That is quite the little detail in maintaining, to pay the people who maintain it. Syria was in flames and the Assad regime paid civil servant working in IS territory. These air traffic controllers have a better sense of duty than they have brains to know what is good for them. If you stop getting paid, you stop working. You traded away your rights, for what exactly? What happens if this idiocracy goes on for 3 months? Interesting question in light of your thread about how many people live paycheck to paycheck.

Well that is the point of that thread. Its hard to imagine that atcers with their highish salaries cant handle a delayed paycheck?

Private charity can solve many problems:

Former President George W. Bush wanted to thank his Secret Service detail for continuing to work without pay amid the ongoing partial government shutdown.

In this case, his gratitude took the form of pizzas he delivered right to them on Friday.

Bush posted a photo of the delivery deed to his Instagram, adding that he and his wife, Laura, were “grateful” for their detail and the hundreds of thousands of other federal workers laboring without pay.

It is nice to see that people work without getting paid. They have really earned the pizza.
