The military is so weird. They spend billions of dollars every year to send their employees to other countries to murder tons of people for no reason. They even give people medals for that. But they fire you for just having a good time one night without hurting anyone.

He was not actually fired. He was reassigned.

Common knowledge incidentally. Service members in combat zones murder tons of people for no reason. Its always been that way.

The trick is to avoid combat zones if murder for no reason is a hornet in your bonnet.

I got fired as a Walmart greeter right after I retired.
This woman who you could see at a glance hadn't bathed in a fair amount of time, was entering the store with two kids that she was smacking about every other step. One of them looked about 10 the other looked about 6.
When she got close to me I looked at her and said "Twins"?
She said, "are you blind you old fool. They're obviously several years apart"!
I said "Sorry, I didn't think anyone would have sex with you twice".

““Triggered”” ;p

I.e., yeah, I must have been super “triggered” to have taken the time to put scare quotes around a poor choice of words :D
By that threshold of “triggered”, WoW must have been “triggered” to have posted in this thread. Anyone who posts in any thread has henceforth been “triggered” by that thread! Sound logic at work :D

You claiming I have been triggered triggers me. I would ask you to respect my triggers and not go all trigger happy.

Almost typod half of those as Tigger, which would have been an elastic mistake.

""murder""
""no reason""

I notice you don't seem to take issue with "tons" or "billions of dollars." So you acknowledge that the military goes to other countries to kill tons of people and spends billions of dollars to do it. I guess you've got a point though: There is a reason. But it's usually a stupid reason. And it's technically not murder because the very people who sanction these killings (i.e. the government) have decided that it's not a crime. This is self-evident and you are hairsplitting to question my word choice.

I take issue with that. Tons is off by many orders of magnitude, as is billions.

Megatons of people. Trillions of dollars.

(sanction is irrelevant outside of legal jurisdiction). Murder and without reason is a fair call.

Just apply the principle of repriocity. Say Russia uses a smart missile to kill someone wanted for terrorism. In Manhattan. How long would it take for collateral damage to be classified as murder by the justice system with jurisdiction in Manhattan?

You’re getting on track:
“There is a reason. But it's usually a stupid reason. And it's technically not murder”

I’ll start to agree here, because definitely there’s always a reason. I wouldn’t say, “usually a stupid...,” but maybe, “often an opportunistic...,” like in the case of making war in Iraq for oil. That’s not “stupid,” at least not for the people who made loads of money from the war. And for the military, the reason is always mission accomplishment. That may mean being pawns of opportunism, but, for a military, mission accomplishment is a direct reason.

And yes, “technically not murder” is important. There exist plenty of laws governing warfare that must be followed. Within those rules, if it was outright murder, then the military would/should face prosecution for it. That doesn’t mean that there haven’t been unacceptable civilian deaths which have not been prosecuted, but usually those deaths are due to legislative changes to the rules of engagement — i.e., it is not the military deciding internally that it’s okay to bomb a wedding to get a single target who’s mixed in, it’s the UK’s, US’, or whoever’s governing authority.

So it’s not “hairsplitting”; it’s a big distinction between saying that a country’s government has put policy in place that is murderous or “stupid” and saying that a military is murderous or has no reason. You said it was the military, which is incorrect. If the military breaks government-fed RoE, they get punished for it. This also explains how someone can be forced to resign for “just having a good time one night”; a commander has to be an example of the good order and discipline necessary to follow RoE and accomplish the mission, and hiring ten prostitutes does not set that example. It is entirely internally consistent.

Jurisdiction is just so tricky.

The armed forces may of course raise charges against its members but murder would remain a criminal offense in the country where it took place.

This is why the US always tries to secure bilateral agreements that provide immunity from domestic proceeding when it operates in a host country.

There is of course the presumption of innocence, but that does not apply to basket claims like "murders tons of"

This is certainly the case in combat zones (if a number of incidents had been tried in a domestic court of law, then numerous murder verdict would have been given).

The moral of the story is of course not to create or enter combat zones. Otherwise, murder ill inevitably follow.

You may be able to see this clearly by imagining a military intervention incident on US soild where US courts have jurisdiction.

How likely would murder charges and sentencing be for an isolated incident? Then multiply that to cover the daily to weekly number of incidents that occur in real life in US operations.

This is not exactly brain surgery.
