Only had the misfortune of smelling the secondary odor from people who had eaten it hours earlier sitting in a bus. Everyone who came into the bus asked ”what is that smell?”, ”it smells like a gas leak!” this was natural gas bus. I was working as security and I had no idea what the gas smelled like! So after going up and down the bus sniffing, a pair of elderly couple giggled and told me, ”if you are wondering what the smell is, it is us, we ate surströmming”.

That should be enough for you to get a fairly good picture. It is basically spoiled fish, just that the bacteria responsible are harmless. They are however so effective that NO OTHER LIFE FORM can survive together with them.

And mistaking it for a gas leak I found out was understandable since propanic acid and hydrogen sulfid are some of the products of the fermentation process. That and butyric acid, the one that forms when butter goes rancid. Horrible horrible smells all in their own right, let alone together.

You can hear that he is covering his nose/mouth. Not everyone is as sensitive to horrible smells you know. That is legit surströmming.

Usually you pick the person that you know will react like this for this kind of video.

Most people tend to run away from the smell of Surströmming. It is usually old people who likes to eat it.

First time I got to smell it, I ran. It was my grandparents who opened up a can of Surströmming at our summerhouse. I was kinda chocked that they were going to eat something that smells so bad. But people who has eaten it says it taste good.

Lol, yeah that video is legit. That is how people generally react to Surströmming. The lady did good though. She is strong. She managed to remain close to the Surströmming and even tried to eat it.

It was many years since I smelled any Surströmming so I don’t know how I would react to it today. Maybe I can stand the smell better today now when I’m a bit older, but when I was a kid I just ran away. My instincts told me to get away from it.

Anyhoo. It is an old Swedish tradition, a part of our culture, to eat Surströmming. And I think if people wants to come here to Sweden and live here and be a Swedish citizen, then they must adopt to our culture and learn to eat Surströmming. They don’t need to eat it all the time, but once in a while. Like, one time per year.

The most popular food in the Roman Empire was garum. Pretty much the same thing.

Natural MSG.
