Bezos accuses Enquirer of 'blackmail' over intimate photos

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos on Thursday accused the publisher of the National Enquirer of "blackmail" after it threatened to publish intimate photographs sent by the billionaire to his mistress if he did not cease his investigation into how the newspaper got the pictures.

It comes after the tabloid, having accessed private text messages, last month reported Bezos had an extramarital affair with former news anchor and entertainment reporter Lauren Sanchez -- a leak that led to his divorce.

In a post on blogging platform Medium Thursday, Bezos said Enquirer publisher American Media Inc (AMI), led by David Pecker, approached him with a threat to publish the photos if he did not halt an investigation into the motives behind the leak.

He added the publication demanded he and security consultant Gavin de Becker, who is leading the probe, publically state they had "no knowledge or basis for suggesting that AMI's coverage was politically motivated or influenced by political forces."

De Becker mentioned in a recent Daily Beast interview that "strong leads point to political motives" -- and that he was interested in Lauren Sanchez's brother Michael, a vocal supporter of US President Donald Trump with links to his inner circle, as a possible perpetrator.

And in his Medium post, Bezos, who also owns The Washington Post, pointed to AMI and David Pecker's previous cooperation with Trump -- including payments made to suppress negative stories, currently under investigation by federal prosecutors.

Bezos, his newspaper and Amazon are all regular targets of Trump's signature Twitter tirades.

Bezos also raised the publisher's links to Saudi Arabia -- whose Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is accused of directing the murder of Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi.

"Rather than capitulate to extortion and blackmail, I've decided to publish exactly what they sent me, despite the personal cost and embarrassment they threaten," Bezos wrote in the post, which was entitled "No thank you, Mr. Pecker" and included copies of emails from AMI.

"Of course I don't want personal photos published, but I also won't participate in their well-known practice of blackmail, political favors, political attacks, and corruption. I prefer to stand up, roll this log over, and see what crawls out," he added.

Why doesn't he call the police and have them arrest Pecker for extortion and blackmail?

Trump has a long relationship with the National Enquirer and its CEO, David Pecker. The company long engaged in “catch and kill” agreements on behalf of Trump, paying for negative stories in order not to run them. It admitted to criminal behavior in a plea deal with federal prosecutors where the company and its executives received immunity in exchange for giving evidence against Trump’s fixer Michael Cohen.

[...]

There is no way to predict what consequences may stem from the tabloid’s threat to publish a picture of Bezos’s genitalia. But the National Enquirer may be at additional legal risk. In its plea deal with federal prosecutors, AMI pledged not to “commit any crimes subsequent to the date of the signing of this agreement”. The penalty for violation would be to void the immunity agreement and open the company up for prosecution.

So it looks like Pecker and his National Enquirer wants to be prosecuted.

Bezos should go all in and DESTROY them now.

Paramount:

"Billionaire gets police to crack down on free press" etc. increases pressure on him and interest in seeing the pics.

He publishes first, with description of photos. Greatly reduces the desire to see the pictures, and very hard now for national inquirer to publish the images or leak them. Fessing up makes him look good and defender of free press.

Police can investigate anyway, and likely they will as beach of Peckers plea deal with the authorities.

Bezos is a smart cookie, not hard to see why Amazon has great corporate strategy if he hires people like him.

He doesn't need to do anything else.

He's no desire to end up like Peter Thiel.

He's basically destroyed Pecker already.

I don't know who Peter Thiel is, but if Pecker is basically destroyed already that is good I guess.

Fake media (washington post) vs. patriot media (National Enquirer)

Basically a fight of good vs. evil in its purest form.

^LOL. I remember buying the National Enquirer back in the 50's just to look at the pictures of horrible car accidents that used to be their center folds.
Even as a young teen I recognized a tabloid for what it is. If I want to read fiction I can always rely on rags like the National Enquirer for a quick fix.

Since the OP didn't have the common decency to give us the juicy details, I'll do it:

"In addition to the “below the belt selfie — otherwise colloquially known as a ‘d*ck pick’” — The Enquirer obtained a further nine images. These include:

· Mr. Bezos face selfie at what appears to be a business meeting.

· Ms. Sanchez response — a photograph of her smoking a cigar in what appears to be a simulated oral sex scene.

· A shirtless Mr. Bezos holding his phone in his left hand — while wearing his wedding ring. He’s wearing either tight black cargo pants or shorts — and his semi-erect manhood is penetrating the zipper of said garment.

· A full-length body selfie of Mr. Bezos wearing just a pair of tight black boxer-briefs or trunks, with his phone in his left hand — while wearing his wedding ring.

· A selfie of Mr. Bezos fully clothed.

· A full-length scantily-clad body shot with short trunks.

· A naked selfie in a bathroom — while wearing his wedding ring. Mr. Bezos is wearing nothing but a white towel — and the top of his pubic region can be seen.

· Ms. Sanchez wearing a plunging red neckline dress revealing her cleavage and a glimpse of her nether region.

· Ms. Sanchez wearing a two-piece red bikini with gold detail dress revealing her cleavage."

Bezos should have put the pics in the Washington Post ahead of the National Enquirer. The man has what is commonly called "Fuck You Money".

Trump hates his guts because Bezos made his on his own talent. Not only made his but blew past Trump like he was parked.

if Pecker voided his immunity deal then he's already got one felony to contend with (same one Cohen got)

the illegal corporate contribution for the playmate payoff (its already been established it was for the campaign...as is obvious by timing, but also because why else would Pecker do it, & he probably admitted at the time to get the immunity... it was noted as fact in Cohen's conviction & he didn't fight it)

Releasing the description by the NI lawyers let's him have his cake and eat it.

The words are less shocking, less memorable, less likely to circulate but also kill demand for the images.

The blog by post will not have around like a wapo back issue.

semi-related: that Ted Cruz marital affairs story the Enquirer had during the primaries was entirely based on rumors, with the only named rumor source being Trump's criminal associate Roger Stone

Trump has quite a crime ring going, w/ its own media wings for spreading misinformation

WaPo is investigating Pecker/Trump relationship and Peckers relationship to Saudi Arabia. And Bezos is investigating how the NI acquired his texts.

Peckers demands for not releasing the pics were that the WaPo drop the investigation and make the specific claim that they have no knowledge that NI coverage is politically motivated.

So it seems there is a bit of trump angle, in that Pecker is trying up extort Bexos and WaPo into supporting his claims not to have used the NI to further trump's agenda.

Pecker made the connection in his demands!

^Add to that, Trump is the only celebrity, politician that has ever given the National Enquirer any respect as a news organ. While at the same time condemning virtually every established news organization.

NE has never been interested in truth. They are what used to be called a scandal sheet. They have been several celebrities that have successfully sued the NE for libel. Carol Burnett and Cher are a couple of them.

it doesn't take much for Seb to be proven right

Pecker & Trump being in league is already proven fact

and the demands of Bezos were put in writing

why would it be so important to Pecker that WaPo stop saying they are politically motivated? when has anyone but Trump shown any respect of his rag?

and this news also was on the same day that the White House failed to meet a deadline on the Khashoggi murder report

some speculation being they can't get any of their top intel people to sign off on the total bullshit Trump wants to sell of Saudi royalty innocence

he's proven to be deferential to Russia, Saudi Arabia, & Turkey

The older I get, the crazier shit gets. In 2019, leftists love Jeff Bezos (whose cutthroat corporate practices are objectively some of the worst in the country) and hate Howard Shultz (one of the most woke CEOs on the planet), all because the guy from The Apprentice got himself elected president. Surreal.

Rugian:

This may shock you.

You should sit down.

Sitting yet? Good.

Applauding Jeff Bezos take-down of dodgy scummy extortionists *doesn't* mean you have to love his business practices. And hating his business practices doesn't mean you have to endorse, it even turn a blind eye to, crimes committed against him.

It's this amazing thing: we don't actually need to be so tribal as to view every situation from a lens of "which party is in my tribe".

also in the mix is we know Trump tried to plant stories of Russia being innocent of interference (not collusion, just interference... AFTER unanimous conclusion by our intel agencies... which is totally fucked up, but no one cares)

and we know in the past he liked planting stories using his fake personas like John Barron

entirely plausible he'd have his buddy Pecker plant stories (even if only the dumbest of the dumb trust that colorful bundle of paper & words)
