Can we all agree that Michelin-starred restaruants are a gimmick targeted at pretentious middle-class wannabes who don't have quite enough money to buy anything interesting so they blow it on overpriced handbags, shoes and food?

eating at Michelin restaurants = conspicuous consumption. This is not a controversial point of view. Any poor asshole (especially in a developed country) can make great food. Meanwhile lots of wealthy people hire private chefs. Michelin, it turns out, is a private company that makes arbitrary decisions in order to sell books. But to whom? Uh middle class people with too much discretionary income. Are there good Michelin restaurants? Of course, because making decent food is not rocket science. It is FAR more likely that an especially good restaurant does NOT have a Michelin star than it is for a Michelin starred restaurant to be especially good. because, uh,
Michelins motivation is to make money. Middle class people are notorious for throwing money away.

great chefs are great not because they make great food. It's because they have funds to buy good ingredients and the skills to manage a kitchen (not an easy job). That's it. Eating at a great restaurant is 90% management and only 10% "uh I know how to use a knife and I know that good ingredients are good." people eat at these places so they can say they ate there.
