"Ocasio-Cortez: It’s ‘legitimate’ to ask if [it's] OK to have children in face of climate change"

Lovely. At this rate, in 20 years we'll be debating whether or not compulsory euthanasia is needed to save the trees.

"Freshman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said young people have to ask a “legitimate question” in the wake of climate change and mounting student loan debt: “Is it okay to still have children?”

In an Instagram Live video over the weekend, Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., welcomed supporters into her kitchen—and gave a “special hello to my haters”—while she made chili and poured herself a glass of white wine.

“Our planet is going to face disaster if we don’t turn this ship around,” she said, as she chopped sweet potatoes. “And so it’s basically like, there is a scientific consensus that the lives of children are going to be very difficult and it does lead, I think young people, to have a legitimate question. Ya know, should—is it okay to still have children?”

She continued: “Not just financially because people are graduating with 20, 30, 100 thousand dollars of student loan debt so they can’t even afford to have kids in the house, but there’s also just this basic moral question, like, what do we do?”

“And even if you don’t have kids, there are still children here in the world and we have a moral obligation to them to leave a better world to them.”

Ocasio-Cortez answered questions from viewers while she continued to prepare her meal.

“What would Trump put in chili? BOLOGNA!” she quipped. “He would put bologna in chili. Both because I think that’s what his taste palate is developed to, and for the obvious reason.”

But one of the serious questions was about her signature proposal in the House- the Green New Deal.

“The whole premise of the Green New Deal, is that we’re screwed on climate. I’m sorry to break it to you,” she said. “When it comes to climate in particular, we’re actually screwed. There is a global threat to the planet.”

She added: “At this point, we don’t even have to prove it. Just walk outside in the winter in a lot of places, and its, either way worse than you’re used to, or way warmer than you’re used to.”

“Hurricanes, storms, wildfires,” she said. “We are dying now.”

I have no idea who this (and don't really care), but is she talking about people asking themselves if OK for them (personally) to have children? Or is she talking about people asking if it's OK for people (in general) to have children?

"I have no idea who this"

I am so envious of you right now.

"but is she talking about"

My second post had her full comments.

Yes, I read the second post, but her quotes can be interpreted either way.

Is either answer an acceptable one though?

If they are asking themselves if they should have children, yeah, it's fine. It's their lives, who the fuck am I to care if they question whether they should have children or not? Whether I think it is misguided or not to ask that is beside the point.

Once they start projecting that towards other people, then yes, it starts to become a problem.

Eh, clearly the second option would be worse than the first, but even the first comes down to her strongly suggesting to her viewers that they shouldn't have children in order to spare them from the coming apocalypse of global warming and college debt. Either way, it's building a mindset that's predicated on the idea that humans should stop redproducing.

This is just a slow burn darwin award.

I guess? Maybe I'm just not susceptible to someone suggesting questions like that. I can think for myself and answer questions for myself, regardless of who posed them. For those that can't, well, how much of a loss are we really talking about?

The problem with projecting would mainly be on the side that thinks voluntary childlessness is a problem.

Ruggy
Or alternatively, the student loan system can be revamped and climate goals could be reached.

But until that happens, it is entirely legitimate to ask if having children is responsible.

I will ignore your hyperbole on voluntary extinction. Despite your great expertise in your choice of people to control the nuclear arsenal.

jergul,

I forget how many generations you predicted it would take to reach your dream population of ~400 million? In any case, for someone who takes global warming as seriously as she does, I doubt your timeline would be acceptable to her. Unless of course you are proposing that we also eliminate air travel and farting cows while waiting for the species to slowly decline into near-extinction.

"I will ignore your hyperbole on voluntary extinction. Despite your great expertise in your choice of people to control the nuclear arsenal."

You literally want to get rid of 90% of humanity. You don't get to make this argument, ever.

WoO,

That's a fair point, I admit.

Near extinction has occurred several times (bottleneck events). But near extinction is single digit 1000nds of people.

You really should try to wean yourself off your viral mindset.

I literally think declining birth rates are good. If projected, you have the road map to perpetual humanity on planet and off.

But what is true for 100ds of millions is not true for double digit billions.

Do the energy calculation if you like. How many people could we have if we thought everyone should be able to leave the gravity well if they wanted to?

good, liberals like jergul will die off while rational people will continue the human experience.

Jergul is very rational. His tribe is on the verge of extinction, it is rational for him to want to cull the rest of humanity. He views high fecundity as virus like attributes.

Or liberals like jergul might shape society to meet their needs.

You are usually the one whining about people bringing children into a life of poverty and food stamps, not me.

Nimi
"Verge of extinction" would be when a population numbers in the single digit thousands.

I have never suggested culling human populations.

High fecundity is a viral attribute for populations with low mortality and universal pension systems.

I wait with baited breath to see if you can tell the difference between individuals and populations.
