Exclusive poll: Young Americans are embracing socialism

Generation Z has a more positive view of the word "socialism" than previous generations, and — along with Millennials — are more likely to embrace socialistic policies and principles than past generations, according to a new Harris Poll given exclusively to Axios.

Percent of Millennials and Gen Z agreeing with statement

See chart http://www...a8-4f61-9e6e-0db75f7edc4a.html

Why it matters: The word "socialism" does not carry the same stigma it did in the past, now that it has been resurrected by celebrity politicians like Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Young people's political views often change as they grow older, but their support for socialistic policies is a sign that the old rules of politics are changing fast.

Gen Z and Millennials are projected to make up 37% of the electorate in 2020, and what they're looking for in a presidential candidate is shifting.

The top three voting issues for Gen Z, according to the Harris poll, are mass shootings, racial equality, and immigration policy and treatment of immigrants.

Millennials' top issues are access to health care, global warming/climate change and mass shootings.

Gen X‘s top issues are: Access to health care, terrorism/national security and the national debt — the same top issues for Boomers and older.

Gen Z prefers "socialism" to "capitalism"

61% of Americans aged between 18 and 24 have a positive reaction to the word "socialism" — beating out "capitalism" at 58%. Overall, 39% of Americans are well-disposed toward socialism, but the gulf remains wide for men and those aged over 55.

jergul,

My source is from somewhere on the internet. Or maybe somewhere offline, I dunno. Either way, you're an idiot if you can't find it in the next thirty seconds.

Jergul,

Taken to using the majestic plural, have we? I suppose that's only fitting for someone with your level of delusion.

Not at all. The use of plural is often used when speaking to children.

jergul,

Sorry, none of your children are running around here. At your age it's a bit unexpected to see the onset of Altimeters, though I suppose it can happen.

It's fun talking to those people.

The vast majority have no idea of WTF the word actually means. They generally think it's a synonym for social democracy.

In turn, they think that socialism is communism.

Which I guess is better than being someone who knows what socialism is, yet still supports it.

"Not at all. The use of plural is often used when speaking to children."

Mostly it is used when we want to be condescending shits.

How about this understanding?

"Socialism is the understanding that Capitalism is a market mechanism that serves society, not an ideology that dominates it"?

I would put the sort of person who gave me that definition down as an idiot, rather than a monster.

You do get that many of the problems with capitalism stem from people mistaking it for an ideology, right?

If we're talking about the definition of socialism, the subsequent responses are also things I'd expect from an imbecile.

I have missed these sweet chats. Luckily, they will return in full force while you are miserable in Hong Kong.

The pain people inflict on themselves. Its quite amazing.

You would be the expert on that. I will defer to your insights.

Yeah, have to admit I don't have the energy for them anymore.

There comes a point where you realise that if an imbecile was capable of understanding he was an imbecile, he would no longer qualify/

But you might want to question how it is possible that "cancers" like Norway's Social Democratic system can happily own 1% of global publicly listed equity.

It might have something to do with thinking of capitalism as a market mechanism that can serve society instead of the other way around.

There is after all no end to countries that prefer sacrificing natural resources on the alter of free enterprise.

That would not be a timely manner. What you are doing is right up there with feminists taking teaching jobs in Saudi Arabia because the money is good.

I know quite a lot about being in relatively unpleasant places for extended stays because the money is good.

Its not something I would recommend past a certain age.

And you are past that age.

I didn't realise Norway was so bad. I can see how the cool weather would make you soft though.

My mother did six years while in her sixties. It wouldn't surprise me if you were softer than an elderly woman.

It's five days now.

Nothing wrong with getting divorced. Many people do.

Good luck with that.

It was not a stab so much as a reflection on anecdotal evidence. The only older deep sea fishermen I knew who had not divorced were devout Christians.

You could opt for god I suppose. But otherwise, I just think you will be paying a higher price than people generally like.

But stiff upper lip and eyes wide shut, eh? It is the way of the anglosphere.

For the rest, I'll avoid taking advice from someone who does out of his way to announce his mental and physical inadequacy.

The federal government is planing to access 1.1 trillion dollars you would not otherwise have in the economy for the next budget cycle.

Talk about biting the hand that feeds you.

Cam
I thought I was clear on not expecting or even wanting you to take my advice.

I am just setting the stage for a nice big "I told you so" at some point in the not too distant future.

The government needs to quit it with the deficit spending and they need to quit taking our money thinking they can do better with it than we can.

We need a much much smaller federal government and unfortunately the Democrats and Republicans are committed to increasing the federal government.

What is wrong with deficit spending for as long as the "interest rate" is lower than the rate of inflation?

Its literally free money.

Ultimately, it is the people that do not want a much smaller federal government and in fact would want government to expand its scope.

State direct and indirect involvement at around 40% of everything is about right.

It provides a base for Keynsian counter cyclical involvement.

Otherwise, you just end up giving money to the ultra rich. Which kind of breaks capitalism.

Oligarchy is the opposite of Socialism btw. Both sides can use capitalism to great effect.

Maybe you did. You tend to ramble when you're declaring to the world that you're a moron, so it's not worth keeping track.

If you want to paste where you had, it might be of some interest to somebody for some strange reason.

>>I am just setting the stage for a nice big "I told you so" at some point in the not too distant future. <<

You've also been predicting my divorce for something like the last decade. How's that working out for you?

Obviously, at some point, something will happen. I am mortal, after all. (As far as I know) so I guess if you keep on predicting disaster, someday, you'll probably be correct in some way.
