rank | Tue Mar 12 18:14:35 2019 Actresses Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin are among dozens of parents, sports coaches and college prep executives accused of carrying out a national conspiracy to get students into prestigious colleges, according to a massive federal indictment. The purpose of the alleged scam was to help student athletes get into college as recruited athletes, regardless of their athletic ability, according to the indictment. It alleges that a third party took the ACT and SAT college entrance exams in place of students. The documents also allege that some defendants created fake athletic profiles for students to make them appear to be successful athletes and get them into college. Athletic coaches from Yale, Stanford, USC, Wake Forest and Georgetown, among others, are implicated as well as parents and exam administrators, federal prosecutors said. Huffman, an Academy Award nominee, has been charged with felony conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud, according to court paperwork filed Monday in federal court in Massachusetts. A law enforcement source confirms to CNN that the actress has been arrested in Los Angeles. Loughlin, star of "Full House" and "Fuller House," also is facing the same felony charge -- conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud. CNN is working to get comment from the actresses' representatives. Huffman, best known for her role on TV's "Desperate Housewives," is accused of paying $15,000 to an organization that then facilitated cheating for her daughter on the SATs, the indictment said. Huffman also discussed the scheme in a recorded phone call with a cooperating witness, the indictment said. Of the other defendants, several are sports coaches or administrators at the University of Southern California, UCLA and Yale and Wake Forest universities. The indictment accuses defendants of committing crimes between 2011 and 2019. Much of the indictment revolves around William Rick Singer, the founder of a for-profit college counseling and preparation business known as "The Key." As laid out in the indictment, Singer allegedly paid college coaches to claim that a prospective student should be accepted to college because the student was a recruit for their sports team. However, Singer and the coaches knew that the student was not a competitive player and that his or her athletic profile was fake, the indictment said. This is a developing story. http://www...ion-cheating-scheme/index.html |

rank | Wed Mar 13 14:40:32 2019 http://www...uption-rigged?CMP=share_btn_tw the whole system is one giant affirmative action excersice for wealthy teenagers who are not that bright or especially hard working, and who should not be anywhere near these elite colleges, if graduating the best and the brightest is the task. Donations, gifts, legacy points, paid tutors, "visits". These parents in the news just did the kind of bribery that happens to be illegal, instead of legal. |

I have long been in favor of affluence-based affirmative action programs, for the record. Economic status is far and away the greatest determinant of access to education, and it should be acceptable to make adjustments to admissions standards on those grounds. Race-based AA, on the other hand, is, well, just fucking racist and needs to be abolished. |

rank | Wed Mar 13 17:58:53 2019 And yeah, the FBI conducting a guns-drawn early dawn raid over this was blatantly excessive. |

rank | Wed Mar 13 18:36:33 2019 Not if my goal is to promote the upward mobility, to promote the deserving, who might lack the means, to live in meritocracy. I'm wrong if my goal is to be ruled by Jared Kushners and other moneyed interests which pass wealth from generation to generation, amassing more and more power. Might as well go back to aristocracy |

rank | Wed Mar 13 23:51:58 2019 This makes national news with the justice dept. and outside law enforcement agencies. Yet if your daughter gets raped in a College by another College student, let's make sure we don't ruin the young mans future. Plus protect the college at all cost. |
kargen
rank | Thu Mar 14 00:00:42 2019 The implications of this go beyond the fifty charged so far. This could eventually rip apart Title IX in college sports. Colleges have to offer the same number of scholarships to women as men. Often though they don't have enough apply. Offering bogus scholarships keeps these schools getting their Title IX funding. And TC you don't need an elite school to move on up. The elite schools are more a status symbol for parents now than a superior education and even though that has been known for while this story really highlights it. |
kargen
rank | Thu Mar 14 01:26:47 2019 Oh and I forgot the tax fraud. Cheating on the SAT's has been going on for a long long time though. This might finally be the story that kills the SAT being used as part of the entry process. |

rank | Thu Mar 14 04:41:11 2019 The lesson here is don't try to bribe your kid's way into a school ... unless you have enough money to pay for a new building at the university. |
murder
rank | Thu Mar 14 04:43:39 2019 btw the big scandal here is 300 FBI & IRS agents investigating this nonsense. And then they hold a press conference like they captured John Dillinger. |
kargen
rank | Thu Mar 14 05:11:27 2019 I think it is a fine use of FBI resources so long as the courts follow up with real penalties should they be found guilty. The crimes took place across many states involving people and universities all across the nation. Kind of right in the FBI's wheel house. The main bad guy pled guilty to racketeering charges and bragged that he helped over 800 students get into college. |
