I read the books and enjoyed the first 2 seasons but season 3 they ran out of ideas and it just became lots of shock value. I always suspected the writing would start to be really bad once there was no more source material and that's what happened. I stopped watching the show at that point because I don't enjoy torture porn and they spent like an hour of season 3 on it ... on something never in the books. I stopped watching the show after the attempted rape on Theon scene and when they cut off his penis. It was absolutely gratuitous and the rest of the show was really beginning to bore me too. The source material was also draining around that time too as the red wedding never made much sense to me. So I just stopped and just finished the books instead. Turns out I didn't miss much given how absurdly bad season 8 was. It would've been better had they actually had some character development and build up to what happened but having a main character turn bad all of a sudden and then killed in basically an episode was fucking awful. The last book wasn't very good either and GRRM is lazy so I doubt it will improve in the books either which is a shame.
