Chaos and bloodshed in Hong Kong district as hundreds of masked men assault protesters, journalists, residents

22 July 2019

Hundreds of masked assailants dressed in white have assaulted residents, protesters, journalists and a lawmaker in Yuen Long, hours after an anti-extradition law march ended.

Update: Hong Kong police made no arrests after mob assaulted commuters, protesters, journalists

The group used bamboo sticks and other weapons to attack people in the area and in the West Rail Line station, injuring Democratic Party lawmaker Lam Cheuk-ting, who was seen bleeding from his mouth in a social media live stream.

Police officers were not visibly present when the skirmish occurred.

A photo circulated online by the Civil Human Rights Front, which organised the rally attended by “430,000” earlier in the day, showed a person with multiple bloody lashes on his back.

Update: Church worker and Demosisto member left severely injured by Yuen Long attackers

The Front accused the police of failing to take actions in Yuen Long while people were being attacked and instead, unnecessarily firing tear gas at protesters in Sheung Wan.

“Real thugs have attacked passersby, a journalist and a lawmaker, badly injuring them, but the police have failed to enforce the law. This has angered us greatly,” the statement read.

The group said certain “powerful authorities” have been using “thugs” to attack protesters since the 2014 pro-democracy Umbrella Movement. “Hong Kong people must unite to oppose personal violence and structural violence,” they added.

Stand News reporter Gwyneth Ho said she was left bleeding and injured with swelling at the back of the head and slight dizziness after she was attacked. Ho was sent to hospital to receive treatment.

The Hong Kong Journalists Association said a male reporter was beaten and left bleeding in his mouth.

The men also took a reporter’s TV camera and destroyed it, the press freedom watchdog said.

Police in riot gear arrived at Yuen Long station at around 11:30pm.

The MTR announced at around 11pm that West Rail Line trains will not stop at Yuen Long because of the crowds gathering. Train services resumed at 11:25pm.

In a statement, a government spokesperson condemned the violent scenes: “This is absolutely unacceptable to Hong Kong as a society that observes the rule of law. The SAR Government strongly condemns any violence and will seriously take enforcement actions.”

Meanwhile, in a widely circulated online video, pro-Beijing lawmaker Junius Ho could be seen applauding and giving a “thumbs up” to people dressed in white. He also shook hands with two men who held small Hong Kong bauhinia flags. When a man told Ho, “you are my idol,” the lawmaker replied: “All of you are my heroes.”

Earlier, Yuen Long District Councillor To Ka-lun wrote in a Facebook post that he had received a complaint from a resident, who said he had called the police for help. However, he was told to “not go out into the streets” if he was afraid, To said.

More protests today, despite a police ban.

Hong Kong's cause is a hugely sympathetic one, but realistically I don't know how it can be won. As it stands, the choice is whether totalitarian communism will be enforced on the people now or in 2047. The UK's abandonment of Hong Kong made that inevitable.

It's brurally unfair to give a people a taste of freedom and capitalism as the British did, and then callously hand them over to a state that will eventually strip away their freedoms and everything they've come to hold dear.

Is an extradition law really that bad? If a Hong Kong citizen committs a murder on the mainland China, isn’t it fair that this person is extradited to China to stand on a trial there?

I mean, if a Mexican committs murder in the US and then returns to Mexico – wouldn’t the US want to have him extradited?

Or, instead of an extradition law, maybe China can drone strike murderers in Hong Kong, after they have been convicted in a court of law on the mainland of course.

Actually, they are not prostesting the extradition law any longer. What we see now is plain anti-Chinese protests.

And in regards to the extradition bill, the abuses you are worrying about are so rare that they had to cite a Taiwan case in order to open up Hong Kong to mainland extradition.

You know what isn't so rare? The Chinese government ordering tanks to run over protestors, arresting and abusing political dissidents, cracking down on religion and freedom of expression, and turning entire regions of the country into outsize concentration camps. That's the "wonderful" country you're sucking up to.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/People%27s_Liberation_Army_Hong_Kong_Garrison

The People's Liberation Army Hong Kong Garrison is a garrison of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), responsible for defense duties in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region since the sovereignty of Hong Kong was transferred to the PRC in 1997. Prior to the handover, Hong Kong was under British rule, and the defense of Hong Kong was the responsibility of the British Forces Overseas Hong Kong, with auxiliary help from the Royal Hong Kong Regiment.

As a non-sovereign territory, Hong Kong has never had a military force of its own. The garrison is headquartered in Chinese People's Liberation Army Forces Hong Kong Building in Central, Hong Kong. The troop strength of the Hong Kong garrison is about 6,000 personnel.

An impressive video. It’s been told now, don’t mess with China.

Hong Kong protests: China releases dramatic army propaganda video

China has released a dramatic video showing off its army’s capabilities as the head of the armed forces in Hong Kong said the unrest in the province had seriously threatened the life and safety” of the people and should not be tolerated.

The commander of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) garrison in Hong Kong warned it was “determined to protect national sovereignty, security, stability and the prosperity of Hong Kong”.

http://www...n-unrest-will-not-be-tolerated

If we look at how militarized police in the US has cracked down on protesters and demonstrations – like when people are blocking roads and shit, then I don’t see why China couldn’t do the same when these protesters are blocking roads, buildings and commuter trains etc.

Trump Calls Hong Kong Protests ‘Riots,’ Adopting China Rhetoric

August 1, 2019, 10:34 PM EDT Updated on August 2, 2019, 2:30 AM EDT

President Donald Trump labeled recent protests in Hong Kong as “riots,” adopting the language used by Chinese authorities and suggesting the U.S. would stay out of an issue that was “between Hong Kong and China.”

“Something is probably happening with Hong Kong, because when you look at, you know, what’s going on, they’ve had riots for a long period of time,” Trump told reporters at the White House on Thursday before departing for a campaign rally in Cincinnati.

Trump said he didn’t know what China’s attitude was toward unrest in the former British colony, which is home to tens of thousands of Americans. “Somebody said that at some point they’re going to want to stop that,” Trump said. “But that’s between Hong Kong and that’s between China, because Hong Kong is a part of China.”

Trump’s comments about the protests in Hong Kong could bolster the city’s Beijing-backed government to crack down, despite the U.S. State Department’s official efforts to defend protesters’ freedom of expression. Protests erupted outside police stations earlier this week when the Hong Kong government charged 44 demonstrators with a colonial-era rioting statute that carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison.

The Global Times, a nationalistic newspaper published by China’s Communist Party, signaled approval with an article headlined “Trump tells truth about HK riot.” The ruling party has long used such allegations to justify using force against dissidents, dubbing the 1989 pro-democracy protests in Tiananmen Square a “counter-revolutionary riot.”

Anyway, this just pissed people off.

Thanks to this and the lack of good faith from the govt, there's not much that can be offered that would pacify the protesters.

Long story short, the CCP is stuck between two painfully bad choices. It can launch a full on bloodbath under the full, live streamed view of the international community, having a very good chance of killing plenty of the hundreds of thousands of foreign nationals here.

I can't see how less than that would do anything but piss the people off more.

They can deal with the live streaming by cutting off all communications. All that'll mean is that the rest of the world will assume the worst has happened.

Once this is done, they'd basically be uniting every civilised govt behind Trump and the sanctions. The mainland economy can't take that. It also can't take HK losing its trusted status. The moment the PLA takes to the streets, rule of law is seen as finished here.

Even ignoring the investment that goes through here, you've got the HK economy, you've got the Shenzhen economy and general Pearl River Delta, which would both be nicely fucked. It's no accident that Shenzhen is wealthy.

And then you've got the effects of that damage on the rest of the country. Keep in mind that the CCP's sole excuse for why they should stay in power (Obviously the Communist party bringing in Communism is never going to happen) is economic development and stability.

Or it can give the protesters what they want, which is very different now to what it was six or seven weeks ago. Back then an actual withdrawal of the bill, instead of some meaningless bullshit about it being "dead" would have done the trick. Not much point in Lam resigning, she's just a puppet.

Now, after taking the piss? That's not going to be enough. Any concession would need to be massive.

Any concession that big would show the CCP's weakness. You'd have the PRD wanting it (Why not?) You'd have Shanghai wanting it. It would be a sign the CCP had lost control.

Or they could let it fester for a while. The 70th anniversary of the PRC is coming up. That's a nice, close date for the protesters to still be out and about on. Highly embarrassing to still have this extremely well publicised stuff happening, showing the opinions of people who actually have a voice about living under the CCP.

And while they let it fester (and keep on making noise without taking action. Their statements that the local govt and police can handle it are obvious bullshit) they'll show their weakness again.

GG, CCP. All they had to do was leave well enough alone and profit from it for 50 years. But no, couldn't stop themselves. More proof that this stereotype that the Chinese govt thinks long term is absolute bullshit.

Even if it calms down, from talking with coworkers, there's no comparison between this and 2014. People are getting angrier and seeing they've got less and less to lose.

Anyway, that's the choices.
A bloodbath that will force the rest of the world to join in on America's sanctions.

Giving in to the protesters and giving what they want.

Or letting this fester.

All for a law that no-one needed and would obviously be seen for what it was and resisted.

So yeah, interesting times here. I'd been expecting this at least five years later than it's turned out to have happened.

Depends. I'm working for a British company, and I seem to have shown myself to be better than a very large chunk of their London office. Would prefer to stay. Gigabit internet is fucking awesome. I fully realise it's a petty reason, but it's truly fucking awesome.

We're also operating on the Nikkei stock exchange, so I guess there's a possibility of either Singapore or Japan. Preferably Singapore for the taxes. 40% bonus makes me care about taxes very, very much.

Or I go to another financial trading company in another country, with a bloody fantastic reason for leaving. This industry is incestuous as hell. They have an obsession with getting people who've already worked on their shit.

The wife and daughter are no longer joining me except for holidays. The locals have been fine, but if things go bad, it's a bad time to be an ex Chinese citizen with a mainland accent.

Anyway, I'm staying well away from it all. I've got family there and I know how good facial recognition is. When I go there it's on invite. Just had my two year multiple entry family visa yesterday.

Here's a map of planned protests.

Last weekend had a protest down the road from me. I'm living in Tsim Sha Tsui in Kowloon. It was basically a street over.

Walked through the next day. No damaged stores. A little spraypaint on the street. That's about it. I wouldn't have minded all that much if they'd worked together to wipe out the Indian tailors. Annoying fuckers. If you see someone with a crying child carrying two huge suitcases, there's a very fucking low chance he wants to buy a fucking suit from you, and an even lower chance he'll appreciate having your fucking card shoved in his fucking face.

I do need to grab a post it note or two from a Lennon wall next time I pass one. Whatever your opinions, this is a major piece of history.

For the other country, discussed with the wife at length and she agrees with my reasons for wanting to leave the Asia Pacific region.

Not touching the UK until Brexit happens. Decided against San Francisco after finding out there's literal shit in the streets. We've got an office in New York. Really have NFI.

If shit hits the fan, Singapore would probably be a good destination for a year or two. They're in line to get Hong Kong's business.

Spending Saturday in the Hong Kong stock exchange installing some new servers. Possibly heading to Guangzhou on Sunday. Protests are in the same suburb as my favourite computer store. It would cause me immense sadness if anything happened to it.

And that's even if they do anything. I'm really getting the impression they don't know what bad choice to choose.

I can guarantee they're not holding back for humanitarian reasons. Their reasons for holding back aren't going away, if anything they're getting more and more intense.

For random shit, the main lot I'd generally be concerned about are the mob. In this case, the mob needs to take one look at me to guess whose side I'm on.

The last thing the PLA needs is to attack someone who's obviously a foreigner. That stops this being an internal matter in an instant.

So... Stay away from shit and it should be fine.

The riot police can just teargas their faces and drag them away, like they do in the US if people block roads, communications, bridges and infrastructure. If people resists then the police can just shoot them. In America, the police shoots people every day. I don’t see why Hong Kong can’t follow that example.

Maybe they are just counter-protesters.

The police is being unfairly criticized. If they intervene, then people say: ”oh no... don’t disturb our protests and riots”, and if they then don’t intervene (but standing by and watching) then the same people say ”why aren’t you doing something?! Don’t just stand there!”

Clearly paid by the gangster mafia regime in the USA. As always they are sticking their nose where it does not belong, only to cause chaos and deaths.

Chinese agents needs to start to pay people in the US to cause similar unrest and chaos there. China has a lot of money, and people do anything for a lot of moneys. It doesn’t have to be in the US just yet, but China could instigate long ladting anti-American protests and feelings in the region where the US has a presence. In South Korea, Japan, etc. Rile people up against America and make the yankee go home. China needs to be smart and improve their covert black ops and propaganda.

Either way, the perception is far more important than reality at this point. You can go on about fairness all you like, but the situation has escalated to where it has.

And TC needs to understand the meaning of

"I'll probably start ignoring you here. You're a clueless moron, we get it. Let the adults talk."

””what is the purpose and aim 4 these delusional running dogs? ”

Hmm... maybe they are Chinese government agents and they recorded this video and leaked it so people will believe that America is behind all of it? Maybe China already knows how to play covert ops and propaganda :P

”american m320 grenade launcher, u fuckin cunt. how did they get hold on american weapons then.”

The US embassy is handing out weapons to people. It is what US embassies do in countries when they want to cause problem for the country’s government.

A hundred people vs one guy who is laying down on the ground. Camaban's "peaceful protesters".

As far as I see it. The police has now legit reason to crack down on the rioters to restore law and order and protect people's lives. This can not continue. Had this happened in the US that "protesters" are shutting down an airport, commuter trains, and blocking streets and roads – the US would have used its militarized police to remove the thugs long time ago already.

police already had enough reason to KILL them a month ago.

When they were throwing acid, biting the police officers finger, when they showed mobmentality and beat up every passerby who disagreed with them, with the started using BOW AND ARROW and now also a grenade launcher and molotovcocktails. these are murderous lethal weapons.

they have no support whatsoever in HK, never had any.

the only support they had was for the bill to be withdrawn (thats 500k according to police but 2 million accordin to WHITEY MEDIA).

they never had any support whatsoever for any other demands and certainly not seperation from China.

These thugs are hiding that fact by protestin at the airport. This is the endgame.

the airport is luxurious, has foreigners, and constant influx of people so it looks like they r bigger than they really are.

it also has airco, shops, toilets and restaurants. Who the fuck wuldnt wanna camp there.

Did that man even survive in the end?

In the video you can see how there are people inside a store behind glas window. They are just standing there and watching this guy getting lynched.

Maybe all normal people in Hong Kong are afraid of these violent thugs. Err.. I mean.. peaceful protesters.

Australian police tell Chinese to keep peace after scuffles at rally over Hong Kong

MELBOURNE (Reuters) - Police in Melbourne issued a warning on Saturday after small scuffles erupted between supporters and opponents of the Hong Kong protest movement during a rally attended by several hundred people from the city’s Chinese community on Friday evening.

“We respect the right of the community to express their views peacefully and lawfully but will not tolerate those who break the law or engage in antisocial or violent behavior,” Victoria police spokeswoman said in an e-mailed statement.

The police said that they interviewed two men in relation to “unlawful assault” and released them pending summons, after pushing and shoving took place at the rally organized in support of the Hong Kong protesters. Australian media reported the rally attracted 600 people at its peak.

^ So just like the authorities in Hong Kong – the Australian authorities and police does not tolerate violent behavior either. Weird.
