Reagan was an idiot who knew how to read a teleprompter incredibly well. If he had not won the nomination and presidency in 1980, he would've gone down in history as some idiot narcissist who kept running over and over for the presidency from the very far right.

But even being an idiot, he knew a wedge issue when he saw it and he saw using race as a way to divide democrats from their southern supporters.

It still works to this day.
