here's the video without pauses (2nd video prob more useful)

I'd think more discretion would be warranted for any dog, but he also knows the woman is there, he's talking to her and is his reason for being there.

The thing looked like it was maybe 20 lbs, maximum.

Yes, the cop should have handled the dog like he had a pair of testicles instead of shooting at it. Any grown human who can't deal with a yappy purse dog should probably just kill themselves. And if they happen to be a cop, their entire family for good measure.

Having been bitten by a pit, I have no desire to be bitten again. On the other hand, a single dog on its own is ridiculously easy to manipulate and restrain. Multiple dogs or dog + person is another story.

"Know your target and what is beyond.

Be absolutely sure you have identified your target beyond any doubt. Equally important, be aware of the area beyond your target. This means observing your prospective area of fire before you shoot. Never fire in a direction in which there are people or any other potential for mishap. Think first. Shoot second."

^ when fucking retards mistake domesticated pets for wild animals.

I have also been bitten by a dog, it was about the same size as the dog in the video. And it was my face. 15-20 lbs dogs are not dangerous, even when their teeth are in your face. If you, as a full grown adult, cannot handle a purse pooch, kill yourself.

Honestly, if you're 1v1 against a dog, anything other than like, a mastiff, shepherd, or dogo is easily manageable. And I won't judge someone for shooting something smaller than that, IF it's a reasonable shot AND they're responsible about it. Freaking about and spray firing a small dog and killing a woman a few yards behind it is inexcusable.

FWIW I was bitten pretty badly trying to separate two pits. lol

its not in a police officer's job description to buck and accept they are going home with stitches. expecting them to do that isn't realistic. plus he has no idea if that dog has rabies or some other shit in their system that will either kill him or send him to the hospital.

As I said, I won't seriously judge him on the shot(s), I don't expect him to grapple with some random dog, it wasn't enclosed and actually was HEADED STRAIGHT FOR HIM (lol). But you have to control your shots and be aware of what's behind your target. Any civilian shooter would be held to this standard. If you intervened in a mass shooting and killed a bystander, you can bet your ass you would be held liable.

pets are family members... cops should look at dogs like a 6-yr-old holding a large rock... there's a chance it could hurt you, but killing it over acting aggressive is not warranted

running up & barking is standard behavior... i certainly hope non-cops can't just shoot every dog doing that

"it wasn't enclosed and actually was HEADED STRAIGHT FOR HIM (lol)."

If it was a large dog, it might be slightly understandable. But it wasn't. And firing 3 shots is pretty fucking overkill. Dogs are domesticated and as pets, they aren't exactly all that ferocious. Unless a dog is specifically trained, it's a giant fucking pussy (who will also defend itself). A single loud noise to make it fearful is enough. It turned tail after the first shot.

And if cops are going to freak the fuck out over a dog, they should be glued to a desk instead of sent out to endanger civilians.

I have no problem with police shooting aggressive dogs in situations where they are being forced into a situation with the animal.

This particular situation, the problem is poor situational awareness with firearm use. Sure it's easy to be an arm chair commentary - but the first thing you learn if firearm safety is to be absoltutly aware of what is down range of your gun.

Shooting at a dog that has an unarmed, nonthreatening civilian right behind it??! That's so foolish. The guy doesn't deserve to be a cop with awareness like that. He should get manslaughter charges.

"its not in a police officer's job description to buck and accept they are going home with stitches. expecting them to do that isn't realistic."

And yet in so many countries this is expected and standard behaviour. You choose to be a cop, you accept that the job comes with risks and responsabilities.

All of them, including this one, you fucking tardmuffin.

Remember when an "officer" was indicted for cowering outside of a high school while an active shooter was murdering kids? Yeah, it was in his job description that he would be expected to put himself in harms way, possibly die, to stop such a situation.

[Rugian]: "you're the kind of guy who thinks that George Zimmerman should have just taken the ass kicking, because using a gun to get out of that situation was a pussy move."

There might be a difference between shooting a 20 or 30 lb approaching dog and shooting a 5'11" 158 lb teenager who is on top of you, actively punching your head into cement.

..
[hood]: "Yes, the cop should have handled the dog like he had a pair of testicles instead of shooting at it. Any grown human who can't deal with a yappy purse dog should probably just kill themselves. And if they happen to be a cop, their entire family for good measure."

+1
This was simple cowardice and possibly opportunism (opportunism if it's another cop who gets excited for a chance to draw and fire (useful for bragging rights about having a field shooting under the belt) and thus rushes to make that "draw and fire" call). Police have a number of tools at their disposal for dealing with dogs, so even *if* this had been a larger dog (it wasn't; the video shows a medium-small dog — hopefully better pictures emerge once the outrage spikes), he failed to make the correct choice. E.g., options not used which are part of police response training:
• Defensive push kick to push back the dog and create space to reevaluate. This could have confirmed 2 things: 1. Will the dog attack or is the dog excited to see a visitor? 2. If the dog attacks, does it have the aggression to continue to attack once it is kicked?
• OC Spray. This works on fucking bears. Bears. Fucking. Bears.
• Expandable baton; again, would confirm those 2 things (above), *and* it could be used as a chew block if shoved in the dog's mouth, thus allowing for follow-on strikes/shots if it turned out that the dog was aggressive.
• Keys; jiggle the keys and see if the dog wants to go on a walk. ;)

I've said it before in these threads, but I think police are taught to a debilitating level to reach for their firearms first. They often do not even think about their other options. Part of it is the excitement of firing weapons (more memorable options tend to be preferred in a panic) and also training balance. For the second factor, I think they need to be given more hours of non-lethal training to compete with system shock preference towards firearms (i.e., force them to be aware that they are making a choice, not just "reacting"). A good ratio might be 3 hours of non-lethal training for every one hour of lethal training. Maybe even more when it comes to new people — which this officer was. In that case, maybe 1 hour of lethal to 5 hours of non-lethal.

..
[Forwyn]: "'Know your target and what is beyond.'

Yes! A.k.a., "Know your target and what is beyond" (wording changes depending on source). Failing to observe a firearms safety rule is a result of negligence, maliciousness, or incompetence. The officer should not have fired on this dog, but having made the decision to fire, he should have first cleared his firing line.

I'm hopeful that this factor alone will be enough for charges to be brought against the officer, but I know better; in that 2012 Empire State Building shooting, nine bystanders were hit by officers and not a single officer was charged with anything. They basically reasoned that officers get to decide whether or not the danger is significant enough to use deadly force (crowd or not, bystanders or not, safety or not), which basically gives police license to make these mistakes without fear of repercussions. This officer simply needs to be told by his union rep, "Just say you feared for your life and worried that you wouldn't make it home to your family," and this is over without so much as a transfer. A freely licensed murder of a citizen justified by the shooting of a 20 lb dog.

..
[obaminated]: "plus he has no idea if that dog has rabies or some other shit in their system that will either kill him or send him to the hospital."

Officers have free health care, so a rabies shot and a free emergency cleaning of a bite wound would not be a big deal. The time spent in the hospital would probably be overtime pay. He could even claim disability if he said that a bite hurt his soft baby skin and traumatized his weak nervous system.

I'll estimate the dog is 30-40 lbs and fired upon at ~30 feet... and I've been complimented on my estimating skill... by a family member...

The woman is the fire captain's daughter so that could cause some tension.

Disgusting. I have heard all manners of excuses for this, like happy dogs don’t sprint towards strangers. Uhm yea, some of them do, it isn’t good dog behavior, but it isn’t evil dog behavior either. Regardless, mase, taser, stick, kick, fucking YELL at the dog. So many options...

>>what country is that expected in?<<

Police came to an old appartment once when I had just moved in, because the TV was too loud. My dog just ran out howling when I opened the door, you know to say hello. A chihuahua that died of old age I may ad. They told me someone had complained and added, ”you also have to think about these little creatures, they have sensitive hearing”. lol :)

I can talk smack about Sweden all day, but I got shit to say about our Police. Had it been in the USA I would probably be explaining how I have PTSD from scrapping his carcass into a plastic bag.

Corgis are 20-30 lbs, not 30-40. And the dog in the video certainly doesn't look bigger than a corgi.

And when even the pussy Swede is condemning the police, it must suck to be mt. Or, it would, if the cowardly fuck hadn't abandoned the thread in embarrassment.

I should have been more specific.

Cardigan Welsh Corgi

And yes that dog is bigger. It is taller and longer in the body.

I'm not commenting on whether or not the officer should have used his gun. I wasn't there and the video is to grainy to let us get a better sense of the dogs intent.

It was not a twenty pound dog though unless it was just skin and bones.

some pieces of info:

"Police Chief Will Johnson said at a news conference that the dog, which he described as a Labrador mix, weighed about 40 pounds."
...
Brooks was shot in the "upper torso," Johnson said. The dog suffered a flesh wound and has been quarantined, the chief said.
...
The 25-year-old officer, whose name hasn't been released, graduated from the police academy in February and hadn't fired his service weapon in the line of duty before Thursday, Johnson said. He has been placed on administrative leave.

Hopefully! But they could also convince him to stay so that he can make up for the bad shooting by being a good boy for the rest of his life ;)
