Utopia Talk / Politics / Is cultural appropriation still a thing?

Where did cultural appropriation come from? At a guess I would say it was justification of why black folks can say nigger and other populations can not. Extrapolating that justification to similar circumstances you get the bullshit called cultural appropriation...all because words.

Erm, yes, it's still a thing. It has been for a long time and probably will be long after we're all dead.

I know a guy named McK... who is not a German but is always linking to a video with German music/dancing/clothing as if it was part if his own culture but it isn't and it makes me very angry and I feel as if he would steal a part of my identity without paying proper respect to the cultural roots of this video and sometimes I even think he makes fun of my native culture but then it wouldn't be cultural appropriation so I think he may be serious about being a lederhosen guy even though if I have no doubt that he imported his fake lederhosen from China and not from Germany.

I say it's a fad. I never even heard of it until a few years ago. Saying it will be here long after we're dead grossly overestimates it's longevity!

"Cultural appropriation is a term that was added to the Oxford English Dictionary in early 2017. We will examine the meaning of the term cultural appropriation, where it came from and some examples of its use in sentences."

As with many SJW terms, I imagine you could find that its been in use for decades among fringe groups and Womens' Studies professors, but it only entered into the mainstream in the last few years when the political left and the entertainment establishment suddenly lurched to the hard left on most every subject imaginable.

And they wonder why conservatives are so much more hostile to their views these days.

Retards whine about cultural appropriation, because it's another lever with which to rant about patriarchal white power structures. It's never used against "minorities", and it ignores millennia of cultural intermingling, because the vast majorities of individuals don't give a fuck about cultural "power structures", and have their own individual tastes that can incorporate the cultures of others.

"I say it's a fad. I never even heard of it until a few years ago."

That the term has recently become popularized and, as a result, is often misunderstood and misused, doesn't change the fact that it's an actual thing and won't be going anywhere.

Now, if all you meant is the popularized version of the term, then ok.

As in we appropriate aspects of other cultures as we fancy. Yes that thing has been a thing since we could think. I have appropriated large parts of Swedish culture, but they can have their stinking fermented fish and disgusting pickled fish to themselves, I will stick with Iranian dishes, American, pizzas and med. cuisine and asian food thanks! There is literally nothing with Swedish cuisine worth appropriating. Google "flygande jakob", this is the apex of Swedish cuisine.

what are some iranian dishes to try? Nothing fancy, just regular stuff. I see tons of new iranian eateries open close in my part of GTA. Lamb dishes look particularly nice

northern people have poor cuisines. Not that all southern places have good ones

I've been on an Asian food bender. It's surprisingly easy to cook at home if you can find the right ingredients (Asian markets for the win). Sometimes time consuming, but usually pretty simple.

Kebab (Iranian kebab) any version but the minced lamb meat is my favorite with rice.

Gorme zabzi

Zereshk polo (minced meat or chicken with a barberry and rice). It is a version of this:

Make sure they give you some of ^that^ but the bread based. Mmm mmm.

"Asian food bender"

You give me some fried egg noodles with all them good vegetables, chicken and some spring rolls and it can never be wrong. Asian food is delicious. Cashew with rice, hot basil. I am getting hungry just talking about this.

That scorched rice thing is called "tah-dig". You need to try that, it's bred or rice or sliced potatoes fried in butter at the bottom of the pot when cooking the rice. Who wouldn't like that?

"northern people have poor cuisines."

Yes and there is a perfectly good explanation for this, everything grows that has a taste, needs SUNLIGHT.

http://omnivorescookbook.com/homemade-black-bean-sauce/

This. If you can find fermented black beans, this sauce is fucking delicious. It goes on noodles, with seafood, vegetables. I made a baked salmon dish with vegetables and cashews and a bad version of this sauce drizzled on top. Even with the bad store bought sauce, it was great. It's my current cooking project.

Nim, Iranian food is very similar to Mediterranean food in general, right? Things like pita, shawarma, kebab as you mentioned, falafel?

You don't have to get beans. Get a prepared black bean sauce. I tried both, no reason to go with homemade

Store bought is junk comparatively. That recipe is literally restaurant quality.

But yeah, even store bought is good.

No not really, Iranian food is alot of rice and saffron. No pitas or shawarmas. Even the Iranian kebab is nothing like the Turkish döner or greek gyros. Although the Turks do have a version of it. The first wiki link I posted, that is what is in my heart and belly when I think kebab. But our rice is not like the Asian sticky kind of rice, it is basmati rice, cooked then steamed with a lot of butter or ghee. It is very much it’s own thing the Iranian kitchen. Heh we even have saffron ice cream. Perhaps not surprisingly something like 80% of the worlds saffron comes from Iran.

Alrighty, I don't know nothin about Iranian food.

However, I think I've had saffron rice before - ironically, from a Chinese joint.

^Yes. Fesenjan, if you like sweet food. Very tasty, I prefer it with little meat balls, I think mostly it is served with chicken.
