We have actual uniformed Nazis whose objective is a unified Germany in Europe roaming the United States? They must be super old by now — an easy enemy, though maybe not for Bernie, who must perceive their German blood as quite an obstacle when he’s trying to get his senior, early-bird discount at the local iHop and they’ve already claimed the best handicap spots. It’s a good thing his enemy isn’t the *Neo*-Nazis; they’re much younger and aren’t concerned so much with a unified Germany as with reviving racist sentiments in Alabama trailer parks. That’s a rowdy bunch, though they don’t go to iHop for dinner at 2pm like Bernie’s dreaded Nazis.

That is *literally* (which, in post-truth logic can actually mean “figuratively” — feel free to confirm this in Wiki and crowd-sourced dictionaries) a great path to seeing only through polarized political lenses en route to a self-destructive “us vs. them” nightmare of illogic. It’s something that a Nazi might do — which makes sense, since, in post-truth, “Nazi” is, via a completely normalized Godwin’s Law, anyone with which anyone else disagrees. Kind of a problem when actual Neo-Nazis are throwing rallies but have been erroneously grouped with any Trump supporter who simply didn’t want to vote for Clinton (those fucking *literal* Nazis!). It’s fine, though; carry on. It’s going to suck having Trump for two terms, but at least we’ll know that it’s self-inflicted.

Look, I get your whole attacking hyperbole angle, but Charlottesville was literal Nazis. New, old, they're still Nazis pledging belief in Nazi goals and rhetoric. There's no need to jump the shark by claiming the only Nazis that can exist are those who were in post-WWI and WWII era Germany.

But, as it happens, factions in the “Unite the Right” Charlottesville rally properly self-identified as *neo*-Nazis, which is — factually and definitionally — vastly different than “literal Nazis”. There’s a Venn diagram of overlapping qualities between “Nazis” and “neo-Nazis” which does indeed have similarities when it comes to racism and supremacy, but “neo-Nazi” is not just a specific sub-type of classical Nazi; it is dishonest, inaccurate, reductive, and misguided to simply say that neo-Nazis are a type of classical Nazi (or, similarly, to just say, “[Well, they’re all Nazis.]”) Those logical errors (dishonesty, etc.) produce real definitional problems and falsify the discourse such that the actual problems are brushed under the rug, potentially convincing people to mis-identify their “enemies” and be manipulated by false narratives (e.g., in the reductive, “They’re *all* Nazis,” narrative, the alt-left is mobilized by a lie — the belief in the existence of an easily-digested archetype: the catch-all title of “Nazi”. This false narrative means that they draw upon tactics which do not correctly fit the real and current truth, so instead of debate and reason they themselves skip ahead to fascist violence, believing from simple Nazi-enemy movies that only violence can stop “Nazis” (“Punch a Nazi” comes to mind as a manifestation of this)). But again, feel free to keep up the habit of heuristics and reduction of terms — just don’t be surprised if Trump wins again. The U.S.’s right *and* left both ruin themselves with these sorts of “alternative facts” and smudgings of nuance.

Post-truth has won, between the jokes, the memes and the people who can't tell the memes from the actual narratives, we are fucked.
