Corbyn is very very unpopular. I'm unsurprised he's getting a majority.

As a lib Dem I'm rather used to not winning.

The SNP looks like winning 55 of 59 seats in Scotland.

RIP UK.

Jergul:

But not 50% of the vote by the sounds of it.

So a bit stuck: a majority of MPs, a majority of Scottish assembly members, but no power to call an election, no vote share to win one if called, and should one be called and won, facing all the issues of brexit but even harder.

So not necessarily as much a given as people think.

Boris has now a problem: he has to deliver brexit in a year; and it will be a painful economically. And he won't be able to blame anyone else.

Sunderland could have been won by Tories but the brexit party screwed them.

Blyth valley goes Tory, by 900 votes. LD and green split the vote.

Well done you stupid trots, putting up a dim 1970s throwback who has a habit of budying up with terrorists; and telling your traditional members to "fuck off and join/vote for the Tories".

They did.

Is it still just the exit poll that everyone's going off on? If so I'm holding off on celebrating for now.

That said, getting a blowout victory like this a full nine years into an (austerity-filled, no less) ruling stint would be completely ridiculous. That's when the opposition needs to just nuke its entire leadership and start over from scratch.

Unfortunately Corbyn and his acolytes have had four years to entrench themselves in the party machinery, so who knows what happens if he insists on staying.

Protip: if your government were smaller, electing these idiots would be less troublesome

I think Scoxit is going to gain a lot of momentum as Boris turns brexit into even more of a dog's breakfast.

Holding an advisory referendum is clearly within the scope of devolved powers.

We will see what the courts say on that.

Is it just me or does "stubbornly run a historically unpopular person and figure you'll still win because the person on the other side is an obvious oaf with moronic policies" sound . . . familiar?

I'm pretty sure that's the only decent post tumbleweed's made on UP since Trump announced his candidacy 4 years ago.

It is obviously fake. They cheated. If people cheat in sports, why wouldn’t they cheat in an election?

Jergul:
Boris ballsing up brexit is also a salutory lesson in breaking up unions.

If Scotland leaves, there's no real reason to expect it would gain market share in its trade with the EU. But it will lose a lot of access to UK markets. It will also, should it wish to join the EU, need to erect customs border.

That's before the fiscal and monetary issues.

Project fear on brexit is turning into project reality; and I don't think that fact will be lost on Scottish voters. It may happen anyway, but I don't think it's the dead cert people think.

Is say around 50:50.

That depends. The referendum could follow Scottish Parliament rules on eligibility to vote.

https://www.gov.uk/elections-in-the-uk/scottish-parliament

Or, alternatively, use devolution to create a distinct Scottish identification, then do like in Brexit and only allow Scottish residents to vote in the referendum (EU citizens were not allowed to vote for Brexit).

If they want independence, they can tweak eligibility and get it.

You have to love how jergul, in his attempts to find solace from the election result, immediately tried to pivot the conversation to the question of Scottish independence.

When it comes down to it, he's one of the biggest Anglophobes around. If the Unitdd Kingdon won't consent to being ruled by a bunch of continent EUSSR bureaucrats, then it deserves to be broken up. Lol

Unlike the opposition parties, the Conservatives actually respect the results of referendums, and the Scots decided to stay. In a once-in-a-generation decision, no less. SNP can pull as many stunts as they want, but at the end of the day Boris has the final say on the SI2 question.

The courts have the final say. An advisory referendum would seem to clearly fall within the devolved powers Scotland has.

The conservatives should probably not have called a referendum to resolve their internal party difficulties if they wanted Scottish independence to remain off the table for a generation.

It fundamentally changed what Scotland agreed to be part of.

Scots are not Anglos btw.

Also, my empathy only goes so far. I primarily want brexit over and done with. It is getting boring.

Yes. I lost. I don't think I've said otherwise. But the vote tallies are what they are. Boris has his majority for his brexit.

Let's see if he makes a success of it, and then we can say if my idiocy was overrun by his common sense, or vice versa.

Hacving spent a year as a consultant working on brexit delivery plans for the govt, and having fed into the briefing his new ministers will be getting on our ability - as a matter of logistics - to put in place the measures to implement his deal by December 2020, I think we shall see some turbulent times to come.

Everyone's confidence in the briefing is now zero. I hope someone alerts Johnson that an actual retarded was consulted for his brief.

Yes, that's worked so well to date, ignoring reality and ploughing on.
