US conducts airstrikes in Iraq, Syria after contractor killed, American troops injured in rocket attack

The U.S. military carried out airstrikes in Iraq and Syria on Sunday — days after a U.S. defense contractor was killed at a military compound in a rocket attack.

Military jet fighters conducted "precision defensive strikes" on five sites of Kataeb Hezbollah, an Iran-backed Iraqi militia, Jonathan Hoffman, a spokesperson for the Pentagon told Fox News. Two defense officials added that Air Force F-15 jet fighters carried out the strikes.

U.S. officials have blamed the militia for a rocket barrage Friday that killed a U.S. defense contractor, wounded four U.S. troops and two members of the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) near Kirkuk, in northern Iraq.

Military forces said the attackers fired more than 30 rockets in Friday's assault — the 11th rocket attack on U.S. and Iraqi forces since late October, according to a U.S. defense official.

Five locations — including three Kataeb Hezbollah areas in Iraq and two in Syria — were targeted, Hoffman said in a statement.

He said the U.S. strikes will weaken the group's ability to carry out future attacks on Americans and their Iraqi government allies.

Earlier this month, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo blamed Iran for two separate rocket attacks on the Baghdad International Airport, on Dec. 9 and 11, where U.S. and Iraqi forces are located on the other side of the commercial airport.

Pompeo said if any Americans were harmed in the future, it would "be answered with a decisive U.S. response."

Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., responded: "Today's strikes against Iranian-backed groups in Iraq and Syria are a justified response to the killing of an American and the wounding of several American service members and Iraqis. Tehran must stop attacking Americans or else face even graver consequences."

Trump helped make the problem worst by inviting more people to interfere in the Middle East when we were winning already before against ISIS. He betrayed the Kurds and somehow a few airstrikes is "winning."

Iranian-backed militia says US strikes killed 25, vow revenge
By Zack Budryk - 12/30/19 09:02 AM EST

An Iranian-backed militia on Monday vowed retaliation for U.S. strikes in Syria and Iraq, saying that the actions left 25 dead, according to The Associated Press.

Defense Secretary Mark Esper confirmed the strikes Sunday against Kata’ib Hezbollah, or Hezbollah Brigades in Iraq and Syria, after a rocket attack in Iraq that killed an American military contractor that the U.S. blamed on the militia, according to the AP.

“Our battle with America and its mercenaries is now open to all possibilities,”Kata’ib Hezbollah said in a statement around midnight Sunday, according to the AP. “We have no alternative today other than confrontation and there is nothing that will prevent us from responding to this crime.”

The militia has denied responsibility for a series of rocket attacks on U.S. bases, one of which killed the U.S. contractor

Militia spokesman Mohammed Mohieh told the AP the group would retaliate against the U.S. in a form to be determined by its commanders. “These forces must leave,” he said, in reference to the roughly 5,000 U.S. troops that remain in Iraq to aid Iraqi forces against ISIS.

Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi called the U.S. strikes an “obvious case of terrorism” that disregarded Iraqi sovereignty, while the Lebanon-based main Hezbollah organization called it “brutal American aggression” and said the U.S. “will soon discover how stupid this criminal decision was.”

Adel Abdul-Mahdi, who resigned as Iraq’s prime minister last month amid anti-government protesters but remains in a caretaker capacity, said he had spoken with Esper about half an hour before the U.S. strikes Sunday and that he had unsuccessfully tried to persuade the defense secretary to call off the strikes, according to the AP.

This attack was due to militants wanting revenge for re-imposed sanctions which everybody everybody opposed except Trump.

One of the biggest reasons people supported Trump was that he promised not to drag us into more pointless conflicts in the Middle East yet here we are.

And knee-jerk reactionary dumbfucks support it now because they are just that: reactionary dumbfucks.

Protesters try to storm US embassy in Baghdad after airstrikes

Updated 1043 GMT (1843 HKT) December 31, 2019

Protesters attempted to storm the US embassy in Baghdad on Tuesday, scaling the walls and forcing the gates of the compound, as hundreds demonstrated against American airstrikes on an Iran-backed militia group in Iraq.
Hundreds of pro-Iranian protesters marched through an area of the Iraqi capital that is usually restricted, with members of the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Units, a coalition of predominantly Shiite militias, among them. Video and photos on social media show demonstrators smashing the windows of the embassy and burning items outside its walls.

The US carried out the airstrikes Sunday, in which at least 25 people were killed and 51 wounded. The strikes targeted five facilities controlled by Kataib Hezbollah in Iraq and Syria. Kataib Hezbollah is a militia group that falls under the Iran-backed Shiite Popular Mobilization Forces in Iraq.

The strikes represent the first significant US military response in retaliation for attacks by the militia group that have injured numerous American military personnel, according to US officials.
Iraq's government warned on Monday that its relations with the US were at risk following the strikes.

Mosul wasn't retaken until well after Trump took office, you fucking retard.

This is recent history, driven by Obama/Hillary's intervention.

With any luck, history will note this fucking debacle as one of the worst foreign policy blunders ever.

After the retardation of the Iraq war, imagine losing half the country to headchoppers because you want to arm "moderate rebels" next door.

"After the retardation of the Iraq war, imagine losing half the country to headchoppers because you want to arm "moderate rebels" next door."

what do you call this current bombing of assad's allies, done after the retardation of the Iraq war, plus the retardation of losing half the country blah blah? Triple retardation? These militias were fighting the headchoppers after all, no? Donald wants to lose half a country again?

Probably just double retardation, because Tulsi got in there early and got Trump to stop funneling anti-tank missiles to them.

word salad, this is US military fighting on the side of the headchoppers. And lol@ idea that Donald listens to some Dem congresswoman from Hawaii. "this is US military fighting on the side of the headchoppers."

While Shias are somewhat better than Sunnis, we don't need to pretend that Kata'ib Hezbollah are saints.

This does not directly weaken Assad's position, nor that of Iraq.

"And lol@ idea that Donald listens to some Dem congresswoman from Hawaii."

Donald has a history of making decisions on the fly based on the advice of those who rub shoulders with him.

In this case, seems to just be muh Russia:

"Officials said Trump made the decision to scrap the CIA program nearly a month ago, after an Oval Office meeting with CIA Director Mike Pompeo and national security adviser H.R. McMaster ahead of a July 7 meeting in Germany with Russian President Vladimir Putin."

"You should be saying how, with any luck, history will note this fucking debacle as one of the worst foreign policy blunders ever. Only for consistency, of course"

This is a retarded take, as bombing a small Shia paramilitary org will not lead to the fall of several major cities, deaths of hundreds of thousands, and exodus of millions more.

"his does not directly weaken Assad's position, nor that of Iraq."

oh, good. Finally an acceptable reason for the US military to be fighting on the side of the headchoppers.

"This is a retarded take, as bombing a small Shia paramilitary org will not lead to the fall of several major cities, deaths of hundreds of thousands, and exodus of millions more."

I am only using your standards here. You lamented how Iraq lessons weren't learned, with horrible results, and helping the headchoppers ensued, with more horrible results. Imagine the retardation where the decision to attack is made, after disregarding BOTH disasters.

and of course, lets not forget here that Donald clearly wants to have a nuclear war with Russia, why else wouyld he be bombing russia's allies. Let me help you forwyn, it is funny to see all the contortions you twist yourself into, while trying to explain how it is now ok for america to battle on a side of Al Qaeda. You fail to see many things, selectively, as usual. Lets stick to what we do know. Donald attacks assad allies, meaning he wants a regime change. Donald is fighting alongside Al qaeda because he is a huge warmonger and even willing to risk a nuclear war with russia, in order to do it. Horrible stuff, overall. And, as you said, how much more fuckin retarded this bombing is, than anything else, just because the previous lesson not learned. Two lessons not learned, really

“Damn it, if Donald decides to fight on the side of AL Nusra in syria, then so be it. It is not like I whined about any American military action that attacked Assad for years here. Oh, I did whine? Never mind then. But we need to kill people for shooting rockets at our military bases, it is not like I constantly whined about the Iraq invasion, supposedly a disaster, we must practice reciprocity. This is why I supported killing Ghaddaffi for example, reciprocity for killing those American boys in Berlin, motherfucker. Oh, I didn’t care about reciprocity back then? Never mind again.”

Same with assad regime change, that stupid talking point that you pestered everyone here with, for years. "Waa, waa, damn that bloodthirsty saudite hillary and her regime change, waa! Wait, what? But sure, Kataib Hezbollah was only retaliating for Flight 655, or maybe Mossadegh, who knows, we have to support retaliation for events we weren't alive for now, keep going

I wouldn't use the word cool and I wouldn't punish children. But yes, only if punishing people with american blood on their hands is what drives you, if this is your principled stance, then yep, whatever the more appropriate word than cool is. If you just pretending to have principles, then no, this is stupid

One, Bilal is older than I am and was involved in illicit Syrian oil trade.

Two, people are typically not driven by only one motivation, and proportionate responses are also a factor. Striking the camp that just mortared your base, not outlandish. Droning a senior commander on the tarmac of a third country, perhaps another story.

" Striking the camp that just mortared your base, not outlandish. Droning a senior commander on the tarmac of a third country, perhaps another story."

You keep giving me reasons why you choose to disregard your principles, explaning nuances and different shades of grey, finding loopholes. According to you, there are times when people with american blood on their hands should be killed, and other times when they should not be. Which is fine, but this is why I advised you to drop this retarded pretense of having principles. Who is going to take your argument about american blood seriously, when you can just turn around and drop it, when it suits you? You selectively give a shit about about regime change policy or about avenging americans, or about the constitution. Which, again, is fine, partisans do it all the time. But you saying that you are against a regime change policy, for example, can't be met with anything other than laughter.
