The Department of Justice revealed in a court filing late Friday that it has two dozen emails related to President Donald Trump's involvement in the withholding of millions in security assistance to Ukraine -- a disclosure that came just hours after the Senate voted against subpoenaing additional documents and witnesses in Trump's impeachment trial, paving the way for his acquittal.

The filing, released near midnight Friday, marks the first official acknowledgment from the Trump administration that emails about the President's thinking related to the aid exist, and that he was directly involved in asking about and deciding on the aid as early as June. The administration is still blocking those emails from the public and has successfully kept them from Congress.

A lawyer with the Office of Management and Budget wrote to the court that 24 emails between June and September 2019 -- including an internal discussion among DOD officials called "POTUS follow-up" on June 24 -- should stay confidential because the emails describe "communications by either the President, the Vice President, or the President's immediate advisors regarding Presidential decision-making about the scope, duration, and purpose of the hold on military assistance to Ukraine."

...

The filings from the executive branch came Friday to meet a court-ordered January 31 deadline. A judge had specifically asked for an email-by-email breakdown of what the Justice Department redacted or withheld in Defense Department and OMB emails about the aid, and why it did so, after the Center for Public Integrity sued and got access to them in December through the Freedom of Information Act.

http://www...-justice-department/index.html

so a filing near midnight on a court deadline to reveal that yeah, they have a bunch of emails that would likely show Trump alleged innocence or definite guilt

...& conveniently just after the Senate votes for no evidence

but i'm sure Trump is super angry they aren't showing those docs...

The DNC just changed its debate rules specifically in order to let Bloomberg on the stage if he qualifies under the polling thresholds. Tell me how exactly you think that's fair?

Yes, I've heard that argument, and Warren seems to have supported getting him on the debate stage for that exact same reason.

Problem is that if Bloomberg does even a half-decent job on the stage, then all the DNC has done is to further legitimize him. That, plus his massive advantage in spending, could put him over the edge.

Also Warren is a bit player who has no concept of what voters outside of her narrow base are actually attracted to, so her endorsement of this idea doesn't exactly make me comfortable.

New York (CNN Business)House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's shredding of President Trump's State of the Union speech was ripped right from Trump's playbook.

It was unprecedented behavior for a speaker, aggressively rude and unapologetically meant to rile up her base. It was divisive, but effective.
The tear seemed to get just as much morning TV attention as the content of Trump's speech. Conservatives denounced her disrespect. Liberals praised her passion. Both sides were incentivized to heap attention onto the moment. It took the Democrats three years, but they may have finally figured out how to control a news cycle in the Trump era.

Vice President Mike Pence claps as Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi rips a copy of President Trump's speech after he delivers the State of the Union address
Vice President Mike Pence claps as Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi rips a copy of President Trump's speech after he delivers the State of the Union address

Overnight and into the morning, the video snippet was shown on a loop on TV and the web. It was, even some of Pelosi's critics begrudgingly admitted, perfect fodder for the meme wars.
"She gave us something to talk about. She knew exactly what she was doing," Fox's Steve Doocy said as he reenacted the ripping to great effect.
It turned the annual address into a personality clash between a Republican man who said he was turning America around and a Democratic woman who said he was lying.

On social media, partisans argued over "who started it" — Pelosi by leading the House to impeach Trump, or Trump by appearing to ignore her outstretched hand when he walked into the House chamber on Tuesday night.

Some wondered if Pelosi was deliberately replacing one meme-worthy moment with another.

Seems like Pelosi may have been trying to replace Meme 1 -- Trump ignoring her outstretched hand -- with Meme 2 -- her ripping up his #SOTU over his shoulder as he was still on the dais.
— Ashley Parker (@AshleyRParker) February 5, 2020

Newspaper editors revised their front pages accordingly. The New York Times replaced a photo of a stone-faced Pelosi sitting behind Trump with a livelier photo of Pelosi in mid-tear. The new subheadline said "Tensions Grow as He and Pelosi Swap Snubs."

The rip-seen-round-the-country totally overshadowed the official Democratic rebuttal address.

Around midnight, as cable commentators chewed on the meaning of the tear, Pelosi's office issued a statement that seemed to justify her action by pointing out some of the false claims Trump made.
"The manifesto of mistruths presented in page after page of the address tonight should be a call to action for everyone who expects truth from the President and policies worthy of his office and the American people," Pelosi said.

The president's defenders ignored the factual issues with Trump's speech and targeted Pelosi instead — Sean Hannity called the ripping moment "one of the most classless things ever done in the history of the State of the Union.‬"

In the morning, Fox commentator Jason Chaffetz said "I have never seen anybody act so childish in my life."

The "Today" show led with a graphic titled "ON A TEAR," and then had a discussion about the act with a conservative and a liberal guest. The Democrat, Claire McCaskill, said the ripping wasn't her "favorite" move, but "it was a speech that was full of lies."
Trump produced his own morning show on Twitter, with a burst of anti-Pelosi retweets, many featuring the hashtag #PelosiTantrum. By 8 a.m., he had shared more posts about her than about his own speech.

Over on "Fox & Friends," Vice President Pence laid into Pelosi, saying "I wasn't sure if she was ripping up the speech or the Constitution."

Of course, all of these TV segments and Twitter hashtags reflect choices about how and where to exert attention.

Ripping up a piece of paper is only a big story if members of the media decide to make it a big story, and if members of the public respond by reading and watching and reacting.

Whether these attention-grabbing tactics are in the best interest of the country, well, that's a debate that requires more than one TV segment worth of time. Producers would rather move on to the next controversy instead.

Jergul,

Every single article on CNN is geared toward putting Trump's presidency in the worst light possible. Of course they'd be singing the praises of Pelosi today (they've been basically giving her the hero worship treatment for the last tel years, why stop now?)

Breitbart is currently praising the SoTU speech for its ability to draw black voters to the GOP. As long as we're looking at news sites with such heavy slants.

That speech-ripping, not to mention her entire acting performance that evening, was so obviously scripted. The attempts by CNN (tw's favorite source) to praise its "spontenaity" were beyond pathetic.

"Nancy Pelosi ‘pre-ripped’ pages of Trump’s SOTU speech, video shows
By Tamar LapinFebruary 5, 2020 | 5:10pm

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi apparently made tiny tears into her copy of President Trump’s State of the Union address — so that her speech-ripping moment could go off without a hitch.

As Trump introduced cancer-stricken radio host Rush Limbaugh — who received the Medal of Freedom during the speech — Pelosi could be seen grabbing the pages off the table.

Video shows her making what seemed to be a tearing motion and then placing the pages back on the table.

Photos of the sheets of paper show them face down on the table with small slits on the side, near where Pelosi would eventually rip them into pieces."

He did file. That is an action. His tweet was used to inform people that he filed the complaint. The action matters, the tweet had he decided not to file was just a tweet and meaningless.

Didn't hear what President Trump said today. Context matters in these things. Was he expressing opinion on what transpired so far this week or was he introducing policy? One would be just opinion that can be dismissed as just that the other would be something to pay attention to.

I've been saying since maybe July of 2016 I don't care for President Trumps tweets and wish he would quit posting them. That some people assign meaning to them just gets in the way of things. But yeah he is entitled to have an opinion just like anybody else and express that opinion on social media however he wishes.

smart dude, "Full disclosure, I haven't voted since 2008 (I voted for McCain)."

If you don't vote then shut the fuck up. You obviously don't care and are willing to let others lead you and set the rules you live under.

A stage play chronicling the anti-Trump text messages between disgraced FBI agent Peter Strzok and former FBI lawyer Lisa Page will take the stage at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) on Feb. 27, Fox News has learned.

The entire play, "FBI Lovebirds: UnderCovers," is derived, verbatim, from the text messages between Strzok and Page, as well as the pair’s answers to prolonged questioning in private congressional hearings.

Lt Col. Vindman fired & escorted out of the White House... he testified under oath to what he witnessed... how awful

any perjury alleged*? i know of none... on any witness except Sondland (before he fessed up)...

(*by a credible person, ie. not the President of the United States)

Vindman was a partisan hack who tailored his testimony to put Trump's actions in the worst possible light. All because he was butthurt that the President of the United States felt he had more of a say in determining American foreign policy than a nobody lieutenant colonel and an army of faceless State Department mandarins.

Oh no, Trump didn't stick to the script you put in front of his face? Guess what, that's his right to do so. He's the President.

Good riddance. Hopefully he's the first of many heads to roll.*

*Since TW is incapable of detecting subtleties in language, that last statement was metaphorical. I, Rugian, am not calling for the execution or death of any official in the executive branch, and I fervently take issue with anyone who asserts otherwise.

you'll be happy to know Vindman's twin brother also tossed, and Sondland being recalled too

a nice signal to anyone who does their legal duty to testify as to what they witnessed

The indignant Vindman may have been Trumps savior, who knows? I can imagine what would've happened if he had waited longer and not skipped his COC running straight to his brother.

Let that sink in for a short time. His self assigned importance in the chain has been rewarded on this day for him and his brother. Their ego's got them into trouble with the Teflon CIC. For such an intelligent man he played it stupidly. The left should blame him for the failure of nailing his prey.

Narrative's are so cool.

Because the Senate was going to convict trump if only the chain of command had been followed?

Anyway, they nailed their prey. History does not shrug off impeachments.

Anyway, its not a human right to work in the white house. Closer to a human rights violation by many accounts.

The brothers have been reassigned within the warm embrace of the DoD.

I cannot find fault with their dismissal from white house service.

He went around his COC, also thinking it was his job to set policy. Nothing to do with conviction. It didn't help him keep his position and Trump is still President. Like I said, he played it stupidly. Even a Norwegian knew Trump wouldn't be removed, hell everyone knew that from the beginning.

Trump may also break another record. First President in his first term impeached and reelected for a second. That will raise the temperature.

History doesn't shrug off acquittals either. Democrats impeach, Republicans acquit, what a surprise. Nor will it shrug off that he finished his term as President, which makes him President for life even if he doesn't win a second term.

OH, one more thing, you do realize that the DOD is an executive branch department of the federal government, don't you?

Or everything to do with conviction. Hard to know what goes inside the minds of others. History sort of does shrug off aquittals.

He was always going to be president for life. Even Nixon was president for life.

"History sort of does shrug off aquittals."

It depends on who is who and what. Same with impeachments. :)

Yes, I did know that. Why? Are you expecting the flourish of a felt pen as it signs directives wanting courtmartials for treason and whatnot?

I will give you that Trump's impeachment may be overshadowed by criminal convictions once his presidency ends. Somethings just have to wait until executive priviliges pass.

hahaha, not hardly, it would have already been done. You seem to realize that Trump could have stripped his rank though if he had chosen that route. You think Vindman learned his lesson that he doesn't set foreign policy? I think so.

So, you think while Trump has been in office he's broken criminal laws? We'll see in time. When he is gone the attacks will stop is my guess.
